    About this video:
    I'm often asked questions about the Evergreens I have in my garden. If you have been around the channel for a bit, you know that I have an affinity for Conifers. Evergreens play a vital role in a garden, providing year-round structure, color, and texture. Unlike deciduous plants that lose their leaves in the winter, evergreens retain their foliage, offering consistent visual interest even during the colder months. They serve as the backbone of garden design, anchoring beds, borders, and pathways with their reliable presence. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, evergreens offer practical benefits, such as acting as windbreaks, providing privacy, and creating habitats for wildlife. Their enduring nature makes them an essential component of a well-balanced and beautiful garden. I hope that this video helps you identify some new Evergreens for your garden.
    Thanks for watching - Steph (Gardening in Massachusetts zone 6b). #gardening

    I think it is important to note that evergreens do not go fully dormant in winter - and thereby the timing of planting is particularly critical to minimize the chances of winter damage - and depends on your location. The weather here in New England is becoming increasingly unpredictable - it is no longer clear to me when the best time is to plant conifers here and I do not think I am alone

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  2 месяца назад +3

      Hi Emma, I have planted evergreens in Spring and in Fall. My fall planted ones appear to do better than the spring planted ones. That is correct evergreens are just that evergreen and while the growth slows down in winter, I agree they are still very much awake. Hence the color changes on their foliage etc.

    • @emmalavenham
      @emmalavenham 2 месяца назад +1

      @@HookedandRooted Thanks for sharing that. IMHO there are just some conifers that have a tendency to get transplant shock - like weeping Alaskan cedars that might settle in better in early spring - but I agree that early fall is likely fine for many if not most

    I’m also in a zone 6B climate, but in the transition zone where we get lows down to -15 and highs up to 110 in the summer (usually for weeks at a time) with no rain in the hottest part of the summer (80% of our rain falls between April & June). On top of this, we get constant winds and have lower humidity and clay soil. I’m really wanting to up my evergreen game, but having a hard time figuring out how much water things need to be happy in our climate without being a slave to the garden. Do you have any helpful learning tips for me?

    I have a hanoki cypress by watching your channel and a couple of gold mop cypress, I don't remember the exact variety. We have deer pressure, so I have my hinoki cypress staked and wrapped with deer netting. I'm hoping once it get a little more size they'll leave it alone and I can take the netting off. I do know I'll need to use some spray deterrent. Thanks for the recommendations.

    I have been scared to plant evergreen trees. Choosing the wrong one. You have inspired me to add some.
    I wonder if running metal mesh/chicken wire and using existing woodland trees to keep dear out. It could be stacked for added height.
    Omg the skeleton 💀 is awesome!

      Hi Shirley, You can turn on the closed caption under the video and it will read the names for you. Also, I repeated the name a couple of times in each segment. Each video takes me several hours to compose and to edit. Adding name would add me even more time (on average I'm spending 10 hours per video). Thanks for understanding, and I hope this helps.
