Old boards are fast as hell, and have style, the thing is they make you work for it... maybe when can have a comparison with a new board in the same conditions to compare speed and effort to reach said speed. 😁
Yeah always wondered. I think older ones feel faster due to width and they turn a bit faster. More danger but that's the greatest thing about them also
Oh man, I have one of those same models which I use today! A yellow F2 slalom board from +20 years ago ! And I have a fanatic ultra rat too, that's impressive! The design of the ultra rat was just beautiful, a real art 🔥
I have a thommen 295, 134liter, it’s been in the garage for more then 10 years, recently cleaned it and prepared for the season, cant wait to swim on it again!
You just inspired me, I still have a 270 slalom copello somewhere in the garage. I might take the old lady for spin as well. I'll let you know how i get on. Greetings from France Ben
I got one of those :))) I especially bought it a few years ago because when I was young I always wanted to have one! Best thing... it looked BRAND NEW, the guy apparently only used its about 3 times... I'm sooooo stoked!!!
Great video. I love seeing old kit go fast. I often use my F2 Ride with Tushingham Heckler or SC5 sails down here at Gruissan. They handle the tramontaine very well but you have to work a bit harder......still loads of fun!
My favourite sails from that time are the Tushingham I was semi-sponsored by a shop that gave me their sails in 1995. Tried F2 and North Sail but Tush was just better.
Would love to see some of the custom glass board 'guns' we used to use in the Gorge back in the day tested like this! I had a Gale Force custom 8'6" w/ 65L displacement, a real sinker but in high winds it screamed and was very controllable and smooth!
Still got a Bic speed needle that had 40 plus out of it and an electric rock amazing for jumps and turns. Get some funny looks with the older boards, but with me keeping many of my older boards I can jump them and not worry about damage or folds etc. Plus I can easily keep up with model equipment with my old '94 Tushingham speed salon sail. I have a model board but it's not the same. I am so comfortable with the older stuff as I have been at it for 30-plus years now. The best thing is the younger lads thinking I can't sail when I bring out the old stuff.
Great board and great video. Looking forward to what comes next! I have exactly the same board and a Sputnik 270 as well. Sailed both of them on lake Neusiedl last year using a Warp 6.2. Especially the Thommen especially needs quite a lot of sail pressure to plane but once you got it going it‘s actually quite comfortable - the Sputnik too…
Had a Sputnik but folded it in half jumping waves :( Great board very light and loved to turn. Still has an electric rock and BIC speed needle from the 88. Plus a few sails, 2 Tushingham speeds sails 5.4 and 5.6, a speed salon, a north sail 6.5 ultra, and f2 wave 4.6. I still, use them now and again, but it's had to get off the beach or bank due to people asking about them.
Purchased a '91 SeaTrends 272(?) back in '92. Sitting in the basement since '96. Randy French design. Made I think in Stevenson, WA, USA. First "shortboard". Scared the poo out of me in anything but flatter conditions. Fastest board ridden to date. You got me thinking. Time to dig it out. Replaced it in '96 with a Mistral Screamer 2. Opposite end of the spectrum. Slow and forgiving.
I am looking forward to your next video on this Ben. That's a pretty impressive speed on the older gear. Would enjoy hearing your comparisons old vs your small slalom and how they "Feel" and handle the speed.
. Swapped out my starboard stype 105 L to a resurrected kinetic 295 slalom 95 litres the other day ,(it was blowing 25 kts). I could not believe the speed difference!!. Handling was problematic, Gybing and keeping it under my feet was challenging!
Good idea. I recently changed the fin on an old Naish Vector and it rocks something serious! 38 cm in order to be able to put maximum pressure on the back foot. Amazing. Planes longer on jibe than recent shapes. Just saying.
Yeahhhh, Björns winning board:-) We have an old Naish Hybrid 110 and 89 which are ultra compact (214cm) and incredible fast with a really unique shortboard feeling!
ciao Ben, thanks for everything you do and for the tips. I wanted to ask you, what is the name of the instrument you wear to measure speed? if you can tell, what brand is it? (forgive if my english is bad, i used google translate)
GPS watch. Coros watch is the most recent, but you can find plenty of them, even Apple Watch will do. I have a motion GPS, without display, it works very well and I can watch all the stats when I am back.
Old school rocks.. Like this 1985 Cobra 320 Gun with a 1985 Fivestars Sails 6.3m2 Speedwing: ruclips.net/video/PtXajN1m4Zk/видео.html And under those perfect conditions anything will go fast 👍🤙
@@emiel2712 GW60 is quite old, the band is not reliable and have a tendency to crack early. Look a Coros, the speed freaks are buying those now. On sale at the GPS speedsurfing web site and elsewhere I guess. I don't have a watch, I have a mini Motion GPS by Endon, no screen, no hassle, just focus on sailing...🌬👌🏼

I only sail this type of board
Thank you!!!
nice, i'm not surprised. i did 38 knots topspeed with a copello redline 265 a copple of years ago. the difference with actual boards is confort.
One of my favourite boards of all time was the Mistral Hookipa back in the mid 80's.

Totally agree and yep.. thats the plan! 👍🏻 ...i would like to get a few sailors involved. Lets see

Love it, just bought a 30 years old F2 Sunset Race. Will take it out tomorrow. Can't wait!

Loved my Thommen 270II back then! Very fast board with my NP MKIV sails then.

It shows that the old boards and sails where pretty optimized even with todays standard. Great clip!
That sail getting ripped out of your hands in the end...well windy!
Cool laydown, seriously wet boom 😀 Must admit I like the look of the shape of the more narrow nose on the boards from the 90es
Well done Ben,sail and fin design has come along way, most old slalom boards would work as long as the mast track is not too far forward.
No-nose boards of this era had the mast track quite far back

Boards from that era weren’t slow. They were tricky to sail.
Che bello tavola stupenda io esco ancora con il sunset slalom f2 pensavo di essere l'unico
Inspiring. love your stuff.
Great post script to your interview with Thommen, and wow! Fast.
This guy is the best presenter......and strangely enough looks like my twin!!!!!!!
Then you are triplets ... and he is "the one that got away" ...
WELL DONE MATE! GREAT!
The F2 sputnik, a few years older then the Thommen is still my daily.... Top speed is good, a nice gibe on these small boards is more tricky.
I just picked up board up for 50 bucks USD can't wait to run it top speed
Looks like you were overpowered a bit😀 Nice result, though! Like to see a direct comparison with a new board under same conditions.
Well I just saw a guy post on youtube, a video about taking his Kona-One to 40mph. So I reckon that Thommen Board should be able to do much much more.

You need to get on a Jimmy Lewis Speed needle! I wish you were closer Ben, you could try mine.
A proper Jimmy Lewis Mudshark is indeed an interesting board to see back on the water 🤙
I love my old mistral for blasting on my local lake :D
Looking into a fin/mast/sail upgrade.
Fun stuff!

Nice! I'm getting my Bic Allegro fixed for this winter!
Yeah, get any of the old speed boards riding the fin wound out on a race sail and they'll deliver a hell of a fast ride.
I was in doubt but now I'm sure that it's not my board that is slow 🤦♂️ could you try an old iSonic pre 2010?
whaaa It’s a F2 Thommen. ~1990 🤙🏽

I use them without the sail as a surfboard. Very fun when u get the hang of it..what a wave hog!
I have the same board good times😎
what is the watch you are using, I really want to know what I do when I go out.
I still have the Sputnik 280 😁
Cool! Which fin?
Giving Farrell a run for his money, Ben!
what is the windspeed ?
I used to have an Alpha 105 slalom fast as anything I’ve ever ridden still have a tiga slalom 285 carbon and a copello

I use a suunto baro 9. Great for all things outdoors 100m waterproof.
great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this are the worldchampion board from björn dunkbeck . why you think this dont work ? Big Smile
I think this video needs a another round with a few old and new boards on the same day, same sail, same legend riding it.
and meanwhile, many windsurfers change boards every year and never exceed 30 knots
Так а что с чем сравнивали ? Какие результаты в итоге ?
Where is this Spot ?!
Man... I got to move to Portugal 😂
Where is that?? Aloha from a Limey in Hawaii.
Martinhal beach, sagres - Portugal
Is this also in Portugal?
Yep.. sagres … Martinhal beach
Pozo might be a contender looking at recent film, last coment should have read ha has har, catch it if ya can.
Old or new fin Ben?
Old one I guess.. but not sure it was in the board! But it was g10.. so maybe newish?

What sail? What fin?
6.3 and I think the fin is a 29?
We have the same watch so I am pretty sure I can go as fast as you :)
Oh what's the model? And would you recommend it? I'm still looking for one.

I have a F2 Thommen 110L for sale . 50€ would be nice😊
41.65 is my PR on a 150l fanatic Shark.

Km/h maybe.. knots sounds a bit optimistic!
Don't worry about the old board I still hold the record from 35 yrs ago ,ha has har
location? perfect conditions and you are the only one on the water :-)
Martinhal Beach, Sagres... yep, it gets lonely out there! haha

260cm
