Went to Nairobi Kenya 1994 on Sabena. After walking and camping up and around Mt. Kenya using the Shipton route took bus to Mombassa. 6 hrs high speed potholes. Took a small plane up to Lamu a wonderful place at that time. Bus back to Mombassa with real risks of highwaymen. Then I rode the original lunatic express to Nairobi. Went coach class and had a wonderful time chatting and enjoying the scenery. It was great in those days. Back in Nairobi the Modern Day Green Day and Night Bar was something else. And the flight back was via Kigali, I think it was one of the first flights to land there after the genocide. A DC-10 if I recall correctly. In those days I still had my exceptionalist colonial mentality. After 25 years living away from the UK in another country/region of the global south I am mercifully, thankfully changed in my outlook.

Hey Noel, greetings from Kenya. The lunatic express is a meter gauge. This is a standard gauge.
What is wrong with the food? You are too old to behave like a teen! Just leave the food and go instead of giving such type of reactions. This is why drew binsky will always be the best traveller, go and learn from him before you travel the world

That alone put me off about the entire video
Nothing disrespectful about it. The guy simply doesn't like what HE paid for.
@@joelang6126 if people from this culture (where the food is from) consider his behavior insulting, it is insulting.

It smells very very rotten. But they eat and enjoy it. So, I gave it a go with risotto. I was not disrespectful like the guy on this video

Never heard of anyone order tilapia with chips while every menu clearly differentiates whole fish and fillet, I think you did it intentionally for your camera buffoonery. Nice views but some of your facts where incorrect.
Misleading title, the "Lunatic Express" was the old Uganda railway and there was nothing crazy about it, the trains were in fact really slow. It got its nickname from the fact that it was really expensive to build.
"What it will cost no words can express,
What is its object no brain can suppose,
Where it will start from no one can guess,
Where it is going to nobody knows,
What is the use of it, none can conjecture,
What it will carry, there is none can define,
And in spite of George Curzon's superior lecture,
It is clearly naught but a lunatic line."

Enjoyed your vlog but I have been annoyed at how you're describing your experience in Kenya as "An African experience" rather than Kenyan. You're falling into same stereotypes that many visitors make about seeing Africa as a country rather a diverse continent full different people, landscapes.
I'm sure you wouldn't make a similar comparison i.e being to Slovakia and describing as a European experience.
This comment is absolutely absurd!
Slovak is very developed say hungary or romania

But remember your in kenya fish in chips is different and don't bit**** about fleys

What a disrespectful title! The railway is a great booster to the economy and us locals find it very convenient. About the fish and chips, that's a perfect plate for us locals, we appreciate the organic flavor and we do not judge everything by the size . It's quality over quantity.
