    In Part 1, we attend the 38th anniversary celebration of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. The Sahrawis celebrate this anniversary every year despite the facts that Morocco controls a third of their homeland and the parade takes place in Algerian refugee camps run by the Polisario.
    At the celebration, we meet Sahrawi activist Sidahmed Talmidi, who, in October 2010, helped mobilize the Gdeim Izik protest camp near Laâyoune, the capital of occupied Western Sahara. Chomsky refers to the thousands of Saharwis who gathered there to demonstrate against both their unequal social and economic status and the brutal denial of their human rights as the real beginning of the Arab Spring.
    Then Ahmed Salem, a war veteran and commander of the Polisario's 2nd Battalion, shows us around the makeshift refugee camps in the arid desert, where more than 100,000 Sahrawis who have escaped the Moroccan occupation have lived for nearly 40 years, relying on humanitarian aid and waiting for the chance to return to their homeland.
    VICE News travels to Western Sahara's occupied and liberated territories, as well as the Polisario-run refugee camps in Algeria, to find out more about one of the world's least reported conflicts.

    Let's see who have been fighting Spain from 1860 to 1975.
    In 1860, Moroccans lost against Spain during the Battle of Wad El Ras which led to the occupation of Sahara.
    In 1898, a Mauritanian Sahrawi fighter and Imam, Ma El Ainin, pledged allegiance to the moroccan sultan of that time and received weapons from him so that he could fight against France in Mauritania. He is buried in Tiznit, Morocco.
    In 1957, Moroccans from Guelmim and Sidi Ifni tried to liberate Sahara during the Ifni War against Spain and France.
    70's Polisario was created.

    The land was in fact occupied by Spain and never was a sovereign nation before. It has always been part of Morocco. But in 1975 the Moroccan people organised a march (The Green March) and liberated the Moroccan Sahara from the Spanish (Franco The Fascist Dictator). But General Franco had one last card to play before being kicked out of the Moroccan Sahara, which was to promise part of the population independence and also agree to the Moroccan masses their Sahara being returned to them. So when he left he knew this would happen.

      @1337BananaL33TVostok 10 лет назад +14

      Hahaha "green march" which came FROM Morocco, organized by the government to demand this land. The fact is that they saw a weak native population ruled by declining empire, so their objective was to get their voice overheard the Sahrawis and use excuses that previous dynasties ruled this land, but it had never incorporated until they invaded it. So cowardly as they are, they saw a clear chance of opportunism. The Sahrawis on the other part never got the chance to a referendum and it's certainly not Morocco to decide their fate.

      The Sahara People and northern Moroccan people are one people and one needs remember that the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia ect...) was one nation until it was divided up by the French and Spanish (DIVIDE & CONQUER, The old British method) (I know, I am British) Franco created this division because a united Morocco is not in the benefit of Franco's Spain. Now if the Polosario just didn't want to be ruled by the Moroccan Government then I understand that because the Moroccan Government is corrupt and do not serve its people and that's why the north of morocco hates the government also. but a divided nation is not in the best interest of the Sahara or the whole of Morocco. The best thing is for all the people, North, Central and south (Sahara) to unite, take control and create a united nation for all the People.

    For those of you who don't know why this is a hard-to-solve conflict. After French & Spanish occupation was kicked out of Morocco then Algeria. The two nations had a problem deciding on the borders. Algeria suggested that both nations should stick to the border drawn by occupation while Morocco refused to give up on "his lands" (many documents & maps show the real size of Morocco). Then the Moroccan people organized the famous "Green March", where Moroccans walked (yeah, really walked) from all places of the country to the Sahara (was occupied by Spain there) to liberate these lost territories. As a Moroccan, I'm ready to give up my last breath fighting for this just cause and end the enemy's dream of dividing the people of two brother nations !

      The sahrawi people of Western Sahara are not Moroccan. They literally have their own culture and dialect separate from Morocco and that’s why they want independence. Morocco’s claim to Western Sahara is antiquated and does not respect the people living there RIGHT NOW. Why doesn’t Turkey claim most of the Middle East if historical claims are so important to you? Why doesn’t Egypt claim north Sudan since those were previously lands of ancient Egypt? You see historical claims should never be used as a pretext for colonization/invasion because then the whole world would be at war using that logic. The Western Sahara border drawn by Spain at least more closely respected ethnic and linguistic differences between the kingdom of Morocco and the tribal sahrawi people.

      TheEmhalo
      contested territory means war. Morocco totally claims it to the point where if you enter Morocco with a world map showing Western Sahara as separate then they will confiscate it if you refuse to give it up the they deport you on the spot.

    A complete ignorance from the journalist, who did not even think about making a very small research about the real situation, and tried to bring some arguments from the opposite side. I stopped watching the video from the moment you said IZDIK was ran by polizario, well it is not, some members of polizario were there, but it does not make them, leader of this protest. There were some violence at this event, however, again the journalist, couldn't even google it, to find many videos where Moroccan policemen were killed and tortured and nobody from polizario was injured. The policemen were even unarmed :)
