    Update as of 2024:
As of me writing this comment, Hand Jumper has 71 episodes, and I have read all of them. And no, my opinion on Min hasn't changed. I still stand firmly by all my points and dare I say, some of my negative thoughts on him have worsened since the release of Season 2. Sleepacross' ex assistant said that Min is actually great and we don't know that yet, but we'll have to see.
I don't hate Min, nor am I biased because of other characters/ships I like (despite what others have said). I was a big fan of Min in the beginning, but he became so overrated that I just. Don't feel at all positive about him. Does that mean that I hate him? Eh, no. He's just not my favorite.
Looking back on it now, this video is very flawed and I wish I did the slides with more care. But even then, I appreciate any and all comments, even though I can't engage in deep discussions with all of them. Peace!

Ok, finished watching it now... This was a great video. Your analysis was very thorough and I think your editing is great. I love seeing content for this webtoon and I'm always happy to see the stuff you make.
I'm going to start off by saying that I really, really like Min. I think that he's a fan favorite for a number of admittedly shallow reasons: he's pretty, has cool scars, has a soft side, fights well, and most importantly, doesn't talk at all. That makes it insanely easy to project onto him. He's the most relatable character to me; I have big NPC energy and so does he, esp when I'm around my friends, people like Ryujin and Iseul who have big fun personalities. But you're right, he doesn't serve much of a purpose in Season 1 and could easily be replaced by some other character.
The reason why I don't hate how he's written is because his character I think has been planted like a narrative bomb. You said that you're just examining what is canon which is totally fair, but I think your short speculations about what might happen with his and Sayeob's relationship is also really interesting. Min is the gateway to 2 things that we haven't seen much of yet: Samin's gang and her life outside of Sayeon, and Sayeon's reaction to betrayal by someone close to her, which I think is inevitable. (1/2)

      @soul___eater 11 месяцев назад +5

(2/2) Now all this depends on how well Sleepacross executes Season 2, obviously. I'm not a fan of the scary-bodyguard-fawns-over-FMC trope so if that's what ends up happening, I'll be pretty disappointed. Like you, I'm curious about why Min didn't keep a better handle on Sayeon in Season 1, but I'm also happy that he didn't. I took his negligence + Samin telling Min to start his bodyguard duties AT THE END of Season 1 to mean that, at first, Samin ordered him not to interfere too much, because she wants Sayeon to experience hardship, grow up in a tough love kind of way. Maybe Samin even thought Sayeon would return to her if she got her ass kicked in the Corps enough. Basically, I actually think it makes sense that Min let Ryujin mess with Sayeon and even let Sayeon get impaled, because her life wasn't in actual danger when those events happened. The warehouse, though.... yeah, you're right, and I'm not sure. Sayeon really could have died there.
One more thing to add, when Min called Sayeon weak, I didn't think it was to be mean. I think he stated it because it was a fact, and probably didn't even realize it could be taken as hurtful. But after watching your video... you know, I started thinking, it would be REALLY interesting if he WAS trying to be mean. It's practically the only time he's said anything either positive or negative about Sayeon. If he secretly dislikes Sayeon, maybe because he thinks it's a waste of time to protect her, but then grows to respect her over time... I don't know. Headcanons and theories. Anyways, thought provoking video, and I'm really thrilled to see more from you.

Why such a heavy bias against him?
He was ordered to observe for this season, and so he did. Why offer any reactions or desires beyond that? (I'm actually surprised I never considered he'd be the spy).
Also, I would not place him as a "quiet character " in either of the two architypes you mentioned at the beginning. Whatever seemingly caring thing he might do means nothing so long as he's a spy. If anything, I'd call him an "apathetic character" which seems in-line considering what he's been through. (It's his design that says it all.) First day at the Corps is probably 1st grade level reading for him.

I don't have any biases 💔But i don't like him for the reasons I listed in the video. I think a lot more could be done with him, and i believe he does have the potential of being amazing, but as it stands, he isn't that good of a character nor does he have anything in his favor, so i find it odd that he has such a big fanbase when he didn't do too much (in my opinion)
Season 2 was released and I've real all the fast pass chapters (as of me replying to you) and i've yet to see anything worth noting about min; he is still the same one-dimensional character i complained about here
One of the old artists who worked in HJ said that min is actually funny, so i'm waiting for the funniness to happen.
Right now, season 2 doesn't have too many chapters and min didn't make any big appearances yet, but i plan on making a second video about him once i have enough material to work on!
In any case, thank you for the comment! ^-^ i love talking abt hand jumper

While reading the comic I've constantly kept thinking about who may be the spy. I understood early on that it was impossible for Ryuujin to be the spy and it was confirmed while reading the story. This left Iseul and Min. Despite this, I've never thought of Min. My options were either someone high up in the corps who we haven't been introduced to yet and was observing from the shadows or Iseul. And the more the story proceeded, the more Iseul become the best option. Even if, with the capture the flag arc, I've kinda forgot about the spy. Min wasn't even an option because, as you said, he was irrelevant.
Something I have to point out thought is that it make sense he didn't intervene when Ryuujin mistreated Sayeon. It's pretty clear Ryuujin isn't a real treat to Sayeon, she won't do anything to her besides giving Sayeon some bruises. Therefore I think the lack of reaction from Min when Ryuujin punches Sayeon isn't a flaw. But the fact he didn't bet an eye when Sayeon got stabbed is indeed a flaw. His lack of intervention could've been explained with "it would've been suspicious if he intervened" or "he knew it was something from which Sayeon would've easily recovered with a bit of sleep, since she's an abberrant", but it wasn't explained at all. Just having a panel in which Min looked a bit thoughtful while looking at the scene would've been enough. But we didn't saw Min's reaction at all. When Sayeon walked up to the group after meeting the instructor Sang, when Iseul expressed his happiness in seeing her being fine, we could've had a panel in which Min thought "of course she's ok". It would've been enough of an explanation and at the same time it would've kept the mistery around Min. And after the last chapter, we, as the audience, would've connected the dots and understood the meaning of his phrase.
One thing I didn't understood from your video is how you can be so sure the meeting with Samin happened right after the one with Butcher and Minnie. I've always assumed the meeting happened after Sayeon left to go to her friend's house. This would also explain why he didn't stop her from going: 1) while she left, he used the opportunity to also go meet Samin. 2) Until that moment he didn't had the job to protect her, just to watch her. I think the timeline of his encounter with Samin is a huge game changer and would make things less worst for the story, even if the fact that Min is a bland character would still remain.
I also want to add that Min's lack of participation with his cellmates could be because of the opposite reason from the one you mentioned. You said he may find it awkward and difficult to connect with people younger than him, assuming he's around the same age as Samin. It's all suppositions but maybe he has always been around people older than him (also considering the fact he was trafficked to get rapture as a kid) so he doesn't know how to act around people his age and also around people who don't want to take advantage of him or make a deal/have something from him. Relationships based only on mutual need are easier than friendships, so maybe he doesn't know how to actually connect with people. This will also explain why he doesn't get close to Sayeon: he literally doesn't know how. This hypothesis could raise the question "why did Samin send someone who can't socialize to take an eye on Sayeon?" and to this question I can respond with two answers: 1) Min is the only one in the Crimson Society around the same age as Sayeon and sending someone older will be suspicious. 2) Samin doesn't want to control Sayeon and know every little thing she does, so she's satisfied with sending someone not so good at spying to watch over her. The second answer will also solve the problem you mentioned, the one about the delusion of knowing Min will always come to rescue Sayeon. With the hypothesis I made, it's a possibility and not something we can always expect since Min sucks at spying. And it will also explain his carelessness. Not to mention that it could also be that Samin preferred sending someone good at fighting rather than someone good at spying.

Omgg thanks for the long comment! I loved reading your analysis and you bring up very good points!
I imagined that Min met with Samin after her encounter with Butcher and Minnie simply because it's what made sense in my head, since the timeline is kinda messy and i never really saw an opening for Min to leave the corps
In any case, thank you for watching and for the comment

@@aquiron2 I love talking about Hand Jumper as well.
As you said, there weren't many opportunities for Min to leave the corps. This is why it's likely that his encounter with Samin happened the day Juni left them by themselves. Since the old lady was sleeping, Ryuujin and Iseul were very drunk and Sayeon went to search for her friend, it was the perfect opportunity for him to sneak away to go talk with Samin.
I don't think the time line is messy at all, it's just that a lot of things happened in a short period of time so it's hard to put things together. But I'm pretty sure everything we saw happened in no more than a week.
Day 1: Sayeon had her abberancy test and was informed that she'll be picked up the next day to go to the corps.
Day 2: She left for the corps, meet instructor Sang, her cellmates and the girls from cell 3, which gave her the haircut.
Day 3: Sayeon and the other went with Juni around the city and the warehouse arc happened. The same day at night she tested her gift and talked with Min, asking him to teach her how to use essence. Meanwhile Butcher and Minnie were presented to us and they had the meeting with Samin.
Day 4: Capture the flag arc, Sayeon talked with the white lady and instructor Sang and "revealed" her gift to her cellmates.
Day 5: Training with Juni, fight with Ryuujin and Juni left them by themselves. Sayeon and the other went around the city, meet the old lady, got drunk, Sayeon found out the corps killed her friend and we found out Min is Samin's spy. End of the season.
As the author said, the first season is like a big prologue to get us into the story. The "real" story will start with season 2.

Finally watched all of your video ૮ ˶´ ᵕˋ ˶ა and, of course, as Min’s biggest fan I have to leave some of my stray thoughts here.
Regarding Min’s statement about Sayeon being weak… it could be that he didn’t mean it as an insult. More as simply a fact worth pointing out at the moment (which probably hurt Sayeon more than an insult).
I agree. A big deciding factor when making a good or bad quiet character is how you present them. Since they do not express themselves with words, the author needs to find an alternative way. Min doesn’t have internal dialogue, no words, no expressions, unknown past or general information about him which leaves us with… basically nothing. He acts like a brainwashed side character cooking for something later in the story. Yet he is portrayed as one of the protagonists early on.
And you know, _I get it._ I was (am) someone who feels like that. I spent my whole life walking besides protagonist whilst adding only awkward moments to the story. Nothing would change if they cut me off. That’s also why I know there could be much more to Min’s characterization. We don’t need the other characters to empathize with him early on, but the audience could get some snippets of his perspective (even if it’s only metaphorically through the art) to not create the problems you talked about. And, to be honest, at this point there should be at least some tangible progress on his relationship with the team. As a Min enjoyer, I want that as well.
I really like your idea that Sayeon didn’t worry much about Min having his face blown off because it’s much harder to empathize with him. I also love your ideas of foreshadowing and consequences. Thank you for this video! You did a great job.
Also I wrote all of this to distract people from the fact that I have never read Hand Jumper.

You bring up a good point about his skill as a spy and Samin's poor choice of choosing him to protect/monitor her (despite having lots of experience in the world and being a gang leader *so she's obviously a strategist*). The fact that she went through a potentially deadly experience and all Min has done is spar with her a bit and follow orders in a battle (not even asking light questions when he hasn't been around her for a bit) is crazy and him being a spy is very poorly set up.
It's kind of like two characters never interacting and then the author saying they love eachother. So far, Min seems like a horrible spy and Samin doesn't come off as a very strategic/smart gang leader.

    • @aquiron2
      @aquiron2  5 месяцев назад +2

Yeah... and even now that the second season aired, it feels very, very obvious to me that the author is trying to set up Min as Sayeon's love interest but the two have ZERO chemistry and even with their training montage they don't talk and are just extremely awkward to be around.
If the author really is pushing for a Sayeon x Min storyline (which i think they are, sadly) they should try to make the two interact more, because as it stands, Min is as flavorful as hospital food.
