  • It’s upsetting to see that so many people in the UK are really struggling to make ends meet on Universal Credit. Prices are rising and some people are finding it increasingly difficult to keep their heads above water. I will guide you on other help you might be entitled to and demonstrate why Universal Credit isn’t enough to live on alone.

If we, the claimants are not available when the DWP do call then we get sanctioned for missing the appointment. It's ridiculous!

I was on UC for 10 months after graduation, after which I found my first 'proper' corporate job. It was a truly miserable time in my life. One month I was only given £9! I'm ever so lucky that I received financial support from my boyfriend, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to make ends meet. The UK benefits system is designed to be cruel, and it's only getting crueller with each passing day. It's one of many reasons why I decided to leave my country of birth and start a new life elsewhere.

I've only recently come on to this system, it's absolute hell. I rang them for help after being awarded £348 per month. Saying it's just not enough to live on, I've got nothing, no food, i haven't eaten for two days. I was very coldly told well go to the food bank then. When i mentioned I'm diabetic and need to have a regular structured food intake to keep it stable, was told go to the hospital or walk in centre if you're symptoms deteriorate. I've had enough.

@@kdloftyhi, hope your doing okay. I have every sympathy with the situation you are in, it must be especially difficult while trying to keep on top of your health condition.
Unfortunately it is a matter of completely changing the way you live whilst solely relying on universal credit.
Prioritising the £368 p/m is key to living with minimal stress. Paying rent on time, having water/electricity and food - the absolute basics.
The rent will hopefully be near enough covered with the housing allowance.
Electricity usage is where you can probably make large savings, especially on heating. Wear a jumper around the house and (if you have to) choose one small room to heat in the evening.
Cook meals from scratch and snack on nutritional raw foods in moderation.
Find activities that are healthy and free eg country walks/reading.
Maybe look for a part time job 10-16 hours (anything) whilst you work out what your long term plans are. The earnings from this work will help, but the government will take 55p for every £1 you earn out of your next months universal credit payment.
This predicament is intentional. The personal allowance in 2012 was around £70 pw, it is now £80ish. If it went up anywhere near inflation it would be easily over £100. The increase of food and energy has made it the perfect storm!
      Best of luck

When I lost my job in 2014, I had to apply for UC. I hated every single minute of it. The vast majority of the work coaches and the rest of the staff that work within jobcentres/dwp, are vile. They sit behind that desk lording it about and too many of them enjoy the fake and fictitious power that they've been given. Too many of them look down their noses at the sick, disabled and unemployed too. If it wasn't for claimants they wouldn't have a job themselves. I was on UC for 2 months and in the end I told them to close my claim. The work coach really didn't like it and she asked me why. I told her that I found UC to be the most barbaric, evil, controlling and cruel benefit that was ever enforced. I then went onto say, that I also had zero interest in attending any of their farcical courses that are delivered by private training providers who get paid for each person that is unfortunate to have to attend as I went onto say, how much more money is govt going to waste on these poxy government schemes that don't help people. Her face was like thunder when I reeled everything off. They don't expect people to stand up for themselves. What also used to drive me to despair was the fact that they'd forever text me asking me to log onto the stupid online journal. One day, it got so bad that even my friend sat there and said to me, jeez how many times is that now that they've text you within the hour. It turned out that it was 7 times with different messages on the journal. I found UC to be so stressful and for the pittance they pay people, it really wasn't worth putting myself through it. What I also could never understand was that the work coach kept saying to me that everything was online for UC so therefore, why do people have to drag themselves to jobcentres for pointless face to face meetings when it can be done online or over the phone. They're forever talking about how they need to cut the welfare bill. if they closed every single jobcentre, that would save billions. I'm yet to meet anyone who has anything positive to say about UC/Jobcentres/DWP/Work coaches. Someone else I know lost their job around the same time as what I had. I said to them are you going to claim UC. They stood there and said no way as they went onto say, they'd rather eat grass than be subjected to constant harassment by some jobs worth. Imagine if everyone told their work coaches to close their claim down or refused to apply for UC? That would put them out of a job themselves. UC also keeps people within the poverty cycle and once you're on it, you struggle to get off it because there's always obstacles or barriers that are deliberately put there to stop you from trying to better yourself. The system has been specifically devised to fail claimants and it's about time it was completely abolished and replaced with a system that actually works and benefits the claimant. What I also noticed was that, they enjoy people being in a perpetual state of fear.

Nearing the third year, I came so close to quitting UC as I couldn't stand doing these errands they give me such as attending a job fair that mostly becomes a waste of time, talking to them via face-to-face or phone for only a few minutes or applying for a mental health course which I refuse to partake in.
I am currently working a part time job but its not permanent, however there is a job vacancy avaliable near where I live & it will be both a full-time job and also permanent, I will be taking it once my part time job is finished and finally say goodbye to UC.

It's like they don't mind giving out free money. Or they do it so the "work coaches" can have a job.
If no one was on universal credit then the work coaches would not have jobs. Also they don't even do anything. All they do is ask "have you found a job, oh you haven't OK come back for your next appointment in 2 weeks."

The problem with prepayment meters is that you still have to pay a standing charge, so even if you dont use any gas or electricity, your credit is deducted for standing charges, this could be as much as £1.20 per day and if your credit runs out, this fee still applies and it starts to build up a debt and when you top up, you have to top up enough to clear the standing charge built up, any emergency credit you have borrowed and have enough for energy to be used. Some people on these meters are also paying back a debt they built up when they once had a normal meter, so you can easily see how £30 of credit runs out and then you have to worry about gas. So £40 on electricity and £50 for gas, thats already £90 gone and that probably wont last a month. Prepayment tariffs per Kilowatts is also more expensive than someone on a post pay meter paying by Direct Debit, its a bit like the difference between a home phone and payphone, the prepay options are always more expensive.
On the subject of telecoms BT offer a social inclusion service for people on benefits and pension credit which offers Broadband and home phone at very low prices, you have to be claiming a qualifying benefit or pension credit and therefore need to provide your National insurance number when ordering this service.

This is partly true, however, when the Country was placed into lockdown for months in 2020. that in itself had a detrimental affect on the economy. The establishment knew that businesses would fold causing further lay offs forcing more people than ever before onto the unemployment register. everything has been planned years in advance ready for the planned/incoming UBI which will come with 'conditions'. Also, UC is interlinked with agenda 2030. All of the info is out there widely available for anyone to see. Finally, the only companies that thrive within this gig economy are the greedy corporations. Again, all by design. You'll own nothing and be happy springs to mind.

I'd say that it was rather sinister. I read a couple of articles towards the end of last year about the governments welfare reform. Basically, they're definitely going to target the long term sick and disabled., particularly those that are in the support group. I have visions of people with serious illness such as cancer, brain tumors, those with mental health problems and so forth being declared physically fit for work. Government are deliberately phasing out the entire welfare system to the point were barely anyone will qualify for any financial support. It will be exactly how it is over in the US. One of my cousins over there lost his job in 2008 when the financial crash happened. They waited weeks for a court hearing to see if they qualified. When they'd had the hearing, it took several weeks to get any further response. When he did finally receive the verdict, he was given food stamps for 12 weeks. The food stamp allowance was put on an EBT card (electronic benefit transaction). You can only use the card at certain stores too. If you don't have a grocery store in your area that accepts the EBT cards for food stamps you then have to drive miles to find somewhere that does accept your card. After the 12 weeks, he was on his own regardless to whether he got another job or not If it hadn't have been for my Auntie, my cousin would have been left to live on the streets. Thankfully, he managed to get fixed up with another job. It didn't pay that well but it was better than nothing but he did end up losing his home. My auntie still had to work until she was in nearly 76 because of how the system is over there. She simply couldn't afford to retire. She was working 2 jobs just to try and make ends meet. This is what the so called welfare reform is all about and the UK is following the system of the US.

I'm on this godawful Universal Credit.
Ok, I'm able to budget and to make it work.... Sort of.
I do online surveys to get Nectar points which helps, a lot.
    However.
    It is a nightmare.
I have mental health and physical health issues.
I don't always react like a normal person would, I have stress related issues that cause me to shut down and have crippling panic attacks and my right hip grinds when I walk so i have to use a walking stick.
When I was on JSA, none of that was a problem.
The JSA advisors knew me, they knew what the problems were, I was treated as a human being when going in.
    That has all changed.
Universal Credit, the advisors, do not give a toss about the claimants.
I'm having to keep myself signed off with sick note after sick note which is hugely detrimental to mental health because I'm now being told by the Doctors that I'm no good, mustn't work.
It is screwing with my head.
    And they keep hounding me.
Messages coming in several times a day.
I hate Universal Credit, but as JSA is now almost gone, I've no choice but to stay on it.
    It's a horrible, horrible system.
And, as a note, my advisor point blank refuses to speak at a volume that can be heard.
I've been steadfast against trying to claim PIP for my own situation, but I need to catch the bus to town several times a week... I need to go to the supermarkets (I don't drive, so if I can't get a bus, I must use a taxi)...
I don't see a way out of the shit hole I am in.

People are worse off with Universal Credit. I have health issues and can't work. My mrs works and used to get working tax credit. Now she doesn't in the new system. They advertised a campaign everywhere and on the radio assuring people that when they changed they wouldn't be worse off. It is just not true. If you are working and on a low to low mid income people are struggling because of this system. Perhaps someone could take them on legally?

It's free why would you work when it's free.
      Single parents get 1000
Half of that is recycled back into social housing - no loss to the system.
Welfare payments are spent that money is recycled back into the system.
Tax, national insurance claimants still have to pay it - again goes back into the system.
The reality is UC keeps them mentally lazy , actually it's a vicious cycle.
Why would you work your balls of when it's free.
The money is hitting bank accounts from bank accounts recycled back to the system.
103 million had been granted to the DWP for A.I alone and automation business models.
The claimant does not see nor reap the 103 million , before that it was 44 million ,granted by the treasury for the DWP business model.
DWP is not what it is cracked up to be , the public assume it's all fluffy clouds and fun on welfare.
Low wages , welfare reflect each other the difference is one works for it the other ones becoming mentally lazy , stuck in a cycle.
Majority of people are a Hair away from being homeless.

@NOAH17841 The problem is not the benefits, the problem is that you are not offered adequate compensation for working your balls off! Why would you work your balls off when you will still have to sit in the cold and ise food banks to survive? Universal credit functions as A) A whip to force you to become a slave for what ever amoral elitist arsehole that will underpay you for your blood, sweat and tears and B) a subsidy to said arsehole that must be paid out because they refuse to pay a living wage.
It makes working people impotent- you are not allowed to withdraw your labour when oligopolies errode pay and conditions to the point that having a job isn't enough to survive because they will punish you for being lazy, where lazy is defined as, "unwilling to accept a toxic work culture." You are expected to be working constantly, not because it lifts you out of poverty or improves your life, but because, "it is the right thing to do," There is no carrot, only more whips!

It is a bloody joke. Firstly you don't get anything for the first month or so if you get paid your last payslip or holiday pay from your last job (like you weren't a tax payer during your time there anyway contributing to the pot that you are not taking a nominal amount out of).
Secondly, they can mess up your oaymebts at any time claiming that a company has taken your payment so it shows up as zero on your portal sending you into a spin.
Thirdly, if that does happen then the helpline can only send a message across to the payments team on your portal as you can also do. You basically can't speak to that team which I heard can be your work coach, if this doesn't get resolved in time then you will go into your overdraft and incur even more charges.
Finally, I have heard that any money that does get transferred into your account by family or friends is used against you so it affects your next payment. You just can't win and the Tories being in power is one big treason. It is all a scam and the jobcentre never help you find work, the appointments with your work coach are often just a waste of time.

Yes, definitely. I started to notice how more and more people in my area had become homeless in 2016. The pittance they pay people on this UC is a disgrace to say the least. It nowhere covers the cost of living, let alone rent. The rate for unemployment benefit hasn't increased all that much in over 20 years either. I know people that were unemployed in the 80's and they were getting paid around £50 a week. 2024, it's around £70 something for people that are single. All these years later and look how expensive it is to actually live in the UK these days. UC reminds me of that movie called I, Daniel Blake.

It's not as simple as, "Pull yourself together" especially when the job you may be in is making you feel like you really don't want to carry on living anymore. Real depression can have a very bad effect on some people.
