  • WEST LINDSEY PARISH #94: MIDDLE RASEN
Welcome to the second of West Lindsey’s three Rasens. This is Middle Rasen, which as the name suggests, sits between the other two. Like West Rasen, its located on the River Rase and on the A631(although technically speaking its also the A46 - but we’ll get to that).
Middle Rasen is a little peculiar in terms of how it’s made up. The modern village is all one settlement, but historically, it was two. These two settlements were called Middle Rasen Drax and Middle Rasen Tupholme. The reason for this was down to their connections to two historic religious houses, Drax Priory near Selby and Tupholme Abbey near Bardney.
As a result, Middle Rasen had two churches. Only one now remains. Middle Rasen had mills - both wind powered and water powered. On Mill Lane is a windmill, built in 1827 which was still working in the 1920‘s. Losing its sails by 1931 it was then engine driven. It still stands, as does the watermill, one of only three remaining on the River Rase.
Middle Rasen’s watermill is the only one of the three to still have its original workings too. Its still a thriving little village, but it has lost a lot of its services over the years. There were two butchers shops, four general stores, a post office, two cobblers, a bootmakers shop and a tailors at one time. Now there’s only one shop and a handful of other businesses.
So it’s an interesting one, this that’s for sure. Get your boots on, let’s go!
