My fave is hour long video essay that starts with a reference to how long the video essay will be as part of around 10 minutes opening filler that's so slowly paced and padded it makes clear that the hour long runtime stems not from an abundance of content but instead from, at best, thoughtless editing and, at worst, just wanting to be an hour long for the prestige of it. Anyway... Capitalism.
11 minutes in their pet appears, and they just have to appear remotely exasperated but they pick them up and play with them on camera anyway. so relatable
THANK you. I fucking hate it when they include moments of their pet walking in the room, even creators who I like a lot do that shit. The only channel I've seen include a pet moment that wasn't cringe and awful was Grayson's Projects.

There was a period like 2 or 3 years ago where all their topics always lead to something about existentialism too. Didn't matter what they started the video about, it always lead to existentialism. They would also always end the video on a somber note and with some synthwave playing in the background.
There was also the period where every fucking video essay about films started with the sound of someone violently mashing their cassette against the VCR followed by very phony grain effect, synth or just 80's esthetic in general cause 80's kids turned 30 so everyone kept shoving 80's esthetic everywhere and make it fucking annoying for everyone.
@@SplendidCoffee0 I don't know, it's becoming nostalgic for sure but the 2000's don't have as strong and different esthetics as the 80's, at least not the kind that would make it into video essays and such, I mean, what do you replace the VHS intro and effect with?
You hit the nail on the head with that line delivery, it gave me a ptsd flashback of clicking on a video essay and instantly regretting my decision but persisting as there’s nothing better to do for the next hour or so.
It’s a style of content popularized by a few key creators and imitated by others, just like the “angry reviewer” style that was popularized before it. I’m interested to see what style film critique and analysis will take in the future of RUclips
Someone just brings cheap beer-branded plastic tables/chairs to the middle of a street and begins drinking alcohol non-stop until the end of the essay so we can watch all the stages of the coherent cynical narrative to slurred speech right to a casual broken conversation with a camera, edited after the youtuber is arrested and released for public disturbance.

I think it comes from the same “place” as mukbang videos. For the creator to eat or drink something can’t be faked so it gives the impression of authenticity.
"Well, you people that I will probably never meet are making me talk about this subject. That's why I spent hours, days, or even weeks researching it because I hate it."
My favorite part about this is that the channel’s name is “Man Carrying Thing” and that’s _exactly_ what almost everyone does when entering the frame during a video essay.
I wonder if it would be awkward if they came into frame with nothing in their hands and we would feel like "something's off here but I can't put my finger on it". what would they do with their hands? dangle them at their sides, fold them together? i reckon there's good reason why they do it
@@inafridge8573 That’s a good point; I never thought of that! Not only might it be most fitting, but many other creators do the same-likely due to your reasoning-so merely seeing nothing in-hand for once after watching others carry things in would likely be bizarre. Fascinating.
One day, we will have a video essay that starts with someone not drinking in the first seconds, because they were wise enough to hydrate before starting the recording
Its always funny to look back at these kind of trends everybody copied and regurgitated. Like I never would have thought the way somebody sat down in a video would make me cringe, but it reminds me of all the copy-pasting people did previously. Like every over-the-top game reviewer after AVGN, then everyone after Jontron, then everyone after Scott The Woz, etc. etc.
the key words to starting a video essay: a name of a philosopher (ten points if it's either an existentialist or marxist philosopher) a term used in a profession that the viewer will never use in real life a phrase or quote that gives you this feeling of worthlessness Capitalism, or any other modern system the video wants to endlessly criticize (plus ten points if it's neoliberalism or authoritarianism) and most importantly, ending the video title with "here's why".
as far as i can tell hbomberguy started that "and here's why" trend and I'm a big fan of it. And he wasn't even complaining about capitalism or any of these "important things" that exist in "society". He was going nuclear on Sherlock and Fallout!
Basically, start off the video with anything you learn from an intro to psych or philosophy class and it's guaranteed people will scream about how intelligent you are
The start of the video will involve a 2 minute long bit where the movie disc and/or box starts "teleporting" around to wherever the reviewer is while they are doing things throughout the day, never leaving them alone, eventually forcing them to review it to break the curse or whatever. There will be a bit where they want to watch a movie they like, but when they open the disc, they find that the disc in the box is for the movie that is being reviewed.

I think it's meant to show how tired/annoyed they are by the subject? There's a girl I watch who did a drinking game once in a movie analysis bc it was just a horrible film xd
Exactly. It makes me cringe. Get a real job then, if youtubing is so hard and has left you so jaded. Come find out how awful things can really be. @@AgnumMD people love the word "cringe" way too much. It ain't that deep bro. Many content creators rely on support from their viewers. Listening to their requests and following trends is part of that. They can only joke about it if they wish for great views, which translates in more money
@@marzo4821 Please don't lecture me on the overuse of "cringe" when you're defending the cliche addressed in the video. You're right that it's not deep though; and that's my point. It's a shallow and hackneyed joke that I've personally seen five youtubers do. I can only imagine how many others have done it too. You're allowed to expect more effort from the people that try to entertain for a living. But your opinion is completely valid, and if you find it funny, I hope it makes you laugh every time you see it happen.
Gotta love how annoyed or irritated they generally sound (Of course after the ever so classic sigh and eye roll) of the topic they've chosen, despite them knowing they fully chose that subject with the intention of banking on as many views they can get... Aka following a trendy topic and acting annoyed that they "have" to talk about it. Smugness is a bit too overplayed and I'm sooooo entertained when things are over saturated.. no originality.
But cynicism and sarcasm are signs of intelligence! If you don't act like every second of life is exhausting, how would your viewers know you're a deep thinking intellectual that has groundbreaking opinions?
"I can't believe I just had to sit through [lame movie that's popular to trash this week]. This must be why suicide rates are spiking." _Takes a swig like a cool substance abuser._

seriously why do they always have to start by walking into frame and sitting down with such a heavy sigh. I've learned that I can usually just start skipping the first few seconds of any video essay because they really don't have anything in there besides a couple extra seconds of direct eye contact with the camera
It's to show how quirky and ironic the uploader is. Just like using the fake stuttering and creating lore about some grim, dark storyline when they're talking about oatmeal.
They are not “profiting” in a capitalist sense since they don't own the means of production or invest their capital in it. Making money does not equal making a profit.

"CAPITALISM"
-I have been blown away with this video essay it really captures everything I want in a video essay.
Just amazing
the key words to starting a video essay:
a name of a philosopher (ten points if it's either an existentialist or marxist philosopher)
a term used in a profession that the viewer will never use in real life
a phrase or quote that gives you this feeling of worthlessness
Capitalism, or any other modern system the video wants to endlessly criticize (plus ten points if it's neoliberalism or authoritarianism)
and most importantly, ending the video title with "here's why".
as far as i can tell hbomberguy started that "and here's why" trend and I'm a big fan of it. And he wasn't even complaining about capitalism or any of these "important things" that exist in "society". He was going nuclear on Sherlock and Fallout!

The 2010 “bad” movie reviewer equivalent to this is acting as if they don’t want to review the thing they proceed to spend time reviewing lol

@@AgnumMD people love the word "cringe" way too much. It ain't that deep bro. Many content creators rely on support from their viewers. Listening to their requests and following trends is part of that. They can only joke about it if they wish for great views, which translates in more money

Just wanted to chime in an inform you that's not what gaslighting is. You know what would be though? If I was wrong on this and aware of it, but wanted to make you question yourself and your sanity as a way to minimize opposition. 👍
if the video essay is about something that isn’t true but can be argued, like the premise op offered, then it’d be gaslighting sure.
And then you get to their comments, where everyone thinks the “I’m right because I say so” method is a legit style of debate.
