I don’t journal for the same reason - I focus on the bad, and my life really is good. I’m so glad I found your channel two years later❤

Well this is a really cool idea! I had heard of commonplace books but no one had been able to really explain what they were to my satisfaction. NOTES ON LIFE! Easy peasey, thank you for sharing. I am currently in my first Hobonichi Cousin for 2024 and I sometimes run out of things to say, but today would have been a fantastic day to take notes. I got it now, thanks a million!

this is the best guide to commonplacing i’ve found. i plan to use this to help me establish a commonplace book either in the daily pages of my hobonichi or in a standalone notebook. thank you for sharing your thoughts, information, and inspiration! 😊

So few people talk about introspective journaling reinforcing rumination. I’ve always found it to do the same, but find the act of writing to be very grounding and centering so I’ve always collected the best bits of what I read or thoughts it has inspired or copied out dharma talks or notes for info to remember. I just referred to it as my daybook, thinking about it as like the journal my grandmother and great-grandmother made about daily life on the farm that helped them track gardening and food prep and animal husbandry.

OH MY GOSH. This is literally MY WHOLE LIFE! Yes, I have quote journals. Yes, I use my own website as a storage/ repository space. Yes most of the things I write are for my own personal future referencing! Yes I'm a PhD student working on a dissertation. I love it!! I commonplace! Its so funny you brought up your MA because I told me advisor- he wants my diss to be short. I told him no, this is one chance to ramble all my thoughts. Its my future reference book. OMG my dissertation is my commonplace book!!!

Sometimes the algorithm just changes your life! I had no idea this style had a name and I feel so relieved. It's like I can stop pressuring myself to fit my scratchings into a "functional" or "journal" stereotype. Because now I know I'm actually drawn to making a commonplace book. Thank you so much for sharing.

Great vid , very helpful. if you do, still want to try journaling , start with a gratitude journal. no negativism possible as you just for now pick one item a day of what you're most grateful of and write that out. just a few lines. Thanks so much for this vid , Love and Light from Europe ✨

Great video! I do like your taking note style...clean, simple and elegant. It is just like mine. I really enjoyed your thoughts and explanations about the differences between a commonplace book and a journal and I totally agree. I journaled in the past and then I threw it all away because I was focusing on negative things and the way I felt about them. And really? I wouldn't keep it for reference or remembrance. I'd rather process and then transforme them in positive lessons, but not to keep them. Instead, I love the idea of the commonplace book, which in a way I always did, because it is free and inspiring to write down, or draw or paint, what you love most, what impacts and impress you, what you keep from that moment that adds beauty, dazzling and learning to your life. That is what matters and that is what I want to keep. Cheers from Brazil!

Thank you so much! I’ve struggled so much because I was “supposed to” like journaling and it would have all these amazing benefits. Yet it always felt like morbid navel-gazing. I’ve heard several people talking about common place books but I always thought of it as a differently formatted journal. I very much appreciated the practical distinctions you made here though. You’ve given me much to ponder. Thank you again!

Common place seems like a more elevated way to say memory keeping. It seems that due to past trauma I tend to "forget" things, so I have started keeping notebooks in the past 5 years...not really journals but I look forward to writing things down daily, I also like to decorate the pages. I enjoyed your video😊

I didn’t know this was a thing either. But this is what I use a journal for too. Information on different subjects I’m interested in, to do lists, lists on a few things I need or intend to purchase for art projects, book, lyric, quote lists, appointments and reoccurring appointments, etc. and I use some stickers for color and fun.

Thanks for sharing your journaling process.
I sincerely enjoyed listening to your thoughts on journaling, and learning about CommonPlace journaling (as well as some of its history).
I understand that everyone has their own preferences.
(Hopefully) Everyone approaches journaling in the way that is most enjoyable and works for them.
For me, though, those journals are very (extremely?) busy, and relatively time consuming (continuously making daily, weekly, monthly calendars).
Although I like the look of those journals, personally they're a bit overwhelming.
So, it was nice to see a different (simpler) approach to journaling.
Also, regarding (0:30 - 1:18 Bad mental place) I think I have a similar feeling to you, so I appreciate you sharing that.
I have been trying to get into journaling, but what you explained is a major reason why I keep from starting.
I enjoy photography, sketching, and painting - so instead of recording my thoughts and events, I've considered inserting photos or draws (i.e. sketches, paintings).
I think that approach will allow me to record a feeling I can look back on, without "hyper-focusing on the negative" while jotting down notes, nor when I go back and read through the journal.
So, I like your approach very much.
It seems very much like keeping lists, except it includes some thoughts on those items.
Anyhow, apologies for rambling. Mainly wanted to thank you for sharing your thoughts, and wanted to mention I liked your journal approach (and your journal) very much.
If I may ask, would you mind sharing the brand/type of journal paper you used? You mention Hobonichi in the title, but I really am not at all familiar with any of this.
I like the translucent look of the paper you used. It also "sounds" like it has a nice texture for sketching.
If you are setup to get credit for purchases, if I purchase via your referenced link, feel free to share that so you can get credit for the purchase and it helps you channel.
Thanks again. I did find this video helpful/ useful. I look forward to future videos!

      Thank you so much!
I use a Hobonichi Cousin (it's the A5 size) and the Avec style splits the year into 2 halves which I prefer because it's less bulky. Hobonichi is a Japanese company that does a boatload of planner accessories and several different styles of planners. The paper they use is the Tomoe River paper - it's very thin, almost like bible paper, but great for fountain pens and variety of other mediums. Some people do watercolor paintings within their Hobonichi and I think sketching would be lovely on it. I don't have a referral link but their website is www.1101.com/store/techo/en/
It is a lot like keeping lists with thoughts :). Journaling through your art is a wonderful method - I imagine it would be a very intimate way to look back and that sounds lovely.

I think this is the exact distinction between a "diary" and a journal. I believe in common placing because it mirrors what i journaled as a kid and adds complexity as i gain new information and knowledge in my adult years, while still keeping the fun of scrapbook journaling and entries that follow the "diary" form as well.

I have watched this video more than once, and want to thank you for it. Strangely there isn't that much on commonplace book-keeping on RUclips, other than what seems to me to be more scrapbooking/art journaling with added quotes. I have tried Evernote for something similar, then notes throughout my planner, but after watching this video decided to keep a notebook specifically for commonplacing. I have since learned that 'silva rerum' is also a term used for this, it is Latin for 'forest of things', and was done by Polish and LIthuanian noble families. I am 25% Polish, so that really speaks to me. Again, thank you for this video.

Thank you so much for this clarification! Ive tried to have a daily journal for 5 years now and I didn’t know how to organize it, opted to have multiple journals for different topics but it was to complicated for me, I tried to make division in one journal, but still wasn’t for me.
Until I stop myself for making perfect and start to write my notes, thoughts, to do, quotes in my own way, and until now I found out it was a thing 😂

Thank you for this. I’m glad your video came up in my feed. I’ve heard the term commonplace book before but never really understood what it is. I think this is a concept that would be useful to me. It’s very interesting that you discuss why you don’t journal because I’ve been wondering what my aversion is to it. I think it’s probably the same reason as you, it would just be negative thoughts and would keep me in a space and energy I don’t want to be in. Thank you so much for sharing this!

my commonplace notebook is actually very chaotic. it has quotes, some random thoughts (short and long entries), movie notes, self help video notes, I even randomly doodle or sketch something then write something about it. some pages are about certain topics like finance ed, religion, philosophy, and documentaries i found on ytb. but recently, it became my reading journal🤭

  • @Akaawol

I'm keeping my Commonplace stuff in a different book. I think the Hobonichi would work best for me (planning on this for the new year) is to use the daily area each morning to list the things I want to accomplish that day and check them off as I go. The weekly area to log how much time those tasks took. like laundry 2-3pm etc. and the monthly as an overview for the big things like doctor appointments. Then the notes are in the back for stuff like my blood pressure checks so I can show my Dr how it's been going.

So apparently I’ve been common placing all my life and I just didn’t know what it was called. This is exactly what I will using my Hobonichi cousin for. This will be my first year owning one.
I noticed in your other videos you used to use a regular cousin and now you have changed to the avec. Just wondering did you find the full book too big because it got too chunky with the stickers etc and the cover wouldn’t close or what is just because it is a heavier product? I ordered a full cousin for 2022 and now I’m worried that i should have ordered an avec because i keep seeing people with planners that are super fanned out and full. I don’t really do art like painting just want to occasionally stick and paste things.

    • @JournalMojo
      @JournalMojo  3 года назад +1

I switched because the full Cousin is a little too heavy for me to carry everyday. It's pretty thin considering all the pages included but it is hefty. I also really like having a midyear reset so I can change things up and get that "new planner" feeling again - it's a little something to look forward to in the summer lol.
I think if my planner didn't live in my purse then the full year would be great. I never had any issues with it getting so full that it couldn't close but I barely use any stickers in the daily pages so that might be part of it. Hope this helps!

  • @angelrosee73

Thanks for sharing as I've been trying to figure out how to use my 2022 Cousin, after deciding it was just too much as my daily planner. Questions.... do you intend to use your commonplace Cousin for more than one year? more as an ongoing commonplace until it's full? I'm trying to wrap my mind around using the dates as the index page # .... and with a commonplace book, do you try to estimate the # of pages to save per topic? for example, I love collecting quotes, but don't know if I'll need 2 or 5 pages for the year... I'm really getting hung up on that too... I do agree about journaling - I usually tend to journal to vent and then feel bad ever reading it again, so I don't journal either. I try to pull a positive or happy memory into my tiny 5 year journal, but that's about it. Thanks again!

    • @JournalMojo
      @JournalMojo  3 года назад +2

I don't use my planners for longer than a year, or half year in the case of the Avec (the full Cousin is so beefy!). I need to have just one thing that I'm carrying around with me, more than that and it gets too complicated and overwhelming lol. Although, I love the idea of small 5 year journal 🥰
So, my index looks like 'Month, Day, Subject' instead of by page number. My master index adds the year to help me locate which book I need since I keep all of my old planners.
In terms of allocating pages, I don't tend to worry too much about it unless I have a very clear idea of what I'm making. If I run out of space, I'll pop over to the next available page and make a little note to indicate that it's a continuation of something and where the rest of it is located. Usually at the bottom of the first page I'll put "continued on month/day" and something like "continued from month/day" on the new page. That way it can just take however much space it needs and I don't have to try and force my notes to be smaller or larger.
      Hope this helps!

Thank you! I didn't know this had a name. It's how I intend to use my new journal (still waiting for it to arrive). I used to keep common place notes when I was in high school and decided to start again this year. I too hate journaling in the traditional sense. I find reading back my own thoughts to be extremely cringy. I sound so whiney and It puts me in a bad mood. I can't write in a way that reflects my true personality. I just sound like a negative brat! Ew no. Lol

That's awesome! It is Journal Mojo but journal can refer to both the act of journaling and the book itself. For me, I jot down little memories in the weekly pages but I don't do daily journaling.
