    My observations after about two months of practicing:
    - Only practice for around five minutes max, and don’t do it every day or you will notice a buildup of pain in your throat.
    - Despite the limit on practicing, the development has been surprisingly quick.
    Day 1: Voice would drop to the F/G area and slide down uncontrollably. I could only do it for about a second before my breath ran out.
    Now: With focus, I can hit a range of notes from B1 down to E1. Upon initial activation of the false folds, the sound is a little shaky, but then evens out on the pitch. I can hold it for about 2-3 seconds now.
    If you’re a bass in an a cappella group, this technique is great as a “wow” factor, but shouldn’t be used as a consistent bassline because it overpowers all other sound, which would ruin a song if used too much. (Watch a live performance of Pentatonix’s “Natural Disaster” for context. Avi hits that growl note when the beat drops, and it shakes the walls. It’s sick when used like that, but if you heard that over and over for the whole song it would become a distraction.
    Hopefully this clears up some things for any of you out there who are also learning it!

      How do you guys KNOW know which note you're hitting. What tuner and recording equipment do you use? I find a lot of the cheaper stuff don't record below D2. I try to record using a chromatic tuner, but they;'re not great at catching growls. Only a consistent long note.

    • @Germsrosolino
      @Germsrosolino Год назад +1

      @@ney57e Super late reply here, but your question was only a few months ago, so not too bad.
      Generally octave jumps are a great way to train your ear and voice. Play a note (like a B2 for example), sing it, then growl the B1. Then do the same for Bb, A, Ab, G, etc. As David suggested, practice this technique sparingly. It's rough on your throat, and you'll give yourself Laryngitis or Pharyngitis pretty easily. Once you get really comfortable doing it and have more muscle control, you'll be able to just growl the notes because you know what they feel like. Same technique applies to practicing Subharmonics.
      Also, big shout out to David for making these videos for so many years. They've completely changed how bass singers do their work.

    Is so cool how now young people can share all of this. I'm 42 and I discovered this back in the 90's but I was afraid to share it because its sounds kind a crazy. But now is a cool technique to share with others. I'm very happy to be alive and be able to enjoy and share all of this. By the way I had no name for this technique, I had no YTube back in the 90, all I did was listening to J.D. Summers, George Younce, Ivan R. and tried to hit some of their low notes. Jejejjejee.. Blessings and great video!

I could only do an E2-G2 growl note (it sounded horrible). Now, 4 years later with some occasional practicing, I can do an E1 growl note:-)

My lowest currently is the G#1-G1 in PTX’s Natural Disaster. The weird thing is that mine comes out very breathy and a lot louder. As kids we do a lot of strange things, I can do the Monster Voice for dozens of minutes with only one or two breaks to drink some water so I don't destroy my throat, and then there's my favorite that I call the Hawking Voice where I just breathe in while speaking (loads of practice and strong tongue control means my enunciation is quite clear), then if I tighten everything in the back of my throat I have the Kermit Voice, and the voice that I lost as I finished puberty was my Mickey Mouse voice since my vocal chords used to have a spot where they just stopped working if I went too high (not fading out as they do now but I mean just full stop no vibrations from phlegm if I remember right) but tightening my throat muscles and tilting my neck back I used to be able to pull some Soprano out of nowhere, at summer camp back in grade 6 I just went for hours using that voice as the class joker XD

    I think my technique is wrong, when I growl, it's pretty loud, and my throat gets VERY dry after, or even hurts. And the 2 big problems are:
    1) I can only hold it for less than 3 seconds
    2) I can't move the note, and I'm very sure I'm making a non-melodic growl and the growl is always stuck at A1 / B1. I can go lower, but I just push it harder and it doesn't sound like a note AT ALL.
    Please help me
    PS, my lowest chest voice is a C#2.

    • @firstlast-wg2on
      @firstlast-wg2on 7 лет назад +10

      I can sing the riff to smoke on the water with this (so maybe almost an octave? I can descend lower but I really don't know what low notes I get because I'm terrible at judging what note I'm hitting on the 0 octave stuff). I've been doing it since I was a kid (making explosion noises with this technique in silly soldier games meant I got used to it and I more recently learned I was using this technique).
      1. Don't push for this, try not to shift so much air to hear the note, the note should be "felt" vibrating and resonating in your body and throat, not your head or mouth (trying to force it out louder will just hurt your voice because whatever you're vibrating, I presume your vocal folds, will have a huge amount of tension). For me, the source is not nasally or high in the mouth, it is right at the bottom and back of my throat where my tongue feels it. I think this comes from doing it a long time and the relaxation but recognize there is a difference between singing the growl with nasal tone and singing the growl in the incorrect spot (which should not be high up and in the nasal-y area if you get my meaning).
      2. If your adams apple is feeling any tension or moving down or up a lot to try and produce the lower notes, stop. Relax your adams apple and try again. The goal is to avoid that movement because it puts uncomfortable and unreasonable stress on your voice. My throat is relaxed when it makes very very very low notes.
      3. If it's stuck at A1 and B1 stay there and get comfortable (patience). Sing songs in the key of A or B (or which songs have those notes in their scale) and add in a growl note every now and then to spice things up. Even if you are just ending a bassline like this example did, you'll naturally get more comfortable.
      4. Holding it for 3 seconds? Do you run out of breath or is it stressful for your throat so much that you give in?
      If you run out of breath try to relax and sing it quieter, I know it sounds counter productive but you will sustain a better bass note if you just lay off it and recognize that with a microphone you will hear these low notes and the microphone will pick up these lower frequencies you will not hear at a similar level. (Remember, you're not trying to produce levels similar to your melodic range of voice, which I expect you know how to project or relax on, you're just trying to produce the note).
      If it's stress related, could you explain what noise you're making after your voice gives in? Sing in the growl and let your voice go out of the growl naturally (don't try to go back into an A1 note or anything just let your voice go out of the growl) if you hear anything but soft air coming out, you're doing it wrong.

      An easy way for me to hit it is by kind of pushing my lips together to slightly tighten my jaw and push the bottom jaw forward a little. When I'm making the growling noise and I do that to my jaw, it usually drops. It does make me cough though sometimes and can hurt if done too much.

      Best Username Ever my lowest chest hovers around an f to an e throughout the day so my growl is around a c to a c sharp with decent volume. Like you said you cant hold it for long since it will basically destroy ur voice when doing it many time. When doing it try not to force it through your throat but use your diaphragm to let it pass through your throat in a way. One of my choir songs had an optional d flat at the end so i used growl for it. Althought it sounds pretty weird up close, it sorts of blends in a very bassy tone when listening far away.

    people:how much can you go lower ? Tim foust : yes

  • @henkkamerman1920

    So, I've been developing this technique for a few years now, my chest voice goes to C2 on a good day, then i use inhaling to bridge the gap to A1 from which I can do this growling technique until A-1 (So that's an octave+ a fifth below a bass guitar)
    As an experienced singer with this technique I'd say: don't practice it for too long, start out with no more than 1 minute a day!! Then it will increase naturally very very slowly. I'm now at the point where I can do it for an hour without hurting and another hour with more effort after 2 YEARS of practice. Don't build it up to quickly or you'll lose your voice completely for a week like I've had in the beginning...

  • @Ignited

    I can do the growling technique quite well, I'm 14, i can do it with both exhale and inhale (go lower with inhale), i can hit the low note that Tim does in Ring of fire with exhale, gonna get a mic soon and am sure i will sound much better :D

      No, it's not. As someone who used to beatbox loads this is similar but different. Do not get them mixed up because I find this firebreathing to do little to no damage to my voice (despite what he says here) when if you apply that Daichi stuff it'll damage your voice more.

      @Aristotle000001 7 лет назад

      No, Chest Bass vibrates lower in the throat, not the false chords. (This does consist of vibrating the false chords)

    • @alkmibeats2133
      @alkmibeats2133 4 года назад

      Aristotle000001 yes, I believe chest bass in beatboxing uses the epiglottis actually to get that low, non-vocalized boom-y growl. You can also vocalize chest bass, which, depending on the texture and pressure you apply, can give you the bass that Wunknown, and Big Ben use, or a much tighter pressure and higher tone will give you the kind of bass that Slizzer and kenôzen use

      So I done it like this. I hit a deep note in my chest area like an G2 und then change it to a growl G1 in the same breath. By doing this I gained more control of hitting a significant note. I increased the difficulty by changing notes while growling and I can say that I'm quite good at it now and can cover deep base lines from avi and Tim. But because I practiced too much sometimes I hurt my throat a little.

  • @Tannerite4targets

    I've always wondered what that was called. I can do this from e2 down to g0-a1ish. I can hold a note in my chest voice and drop down an exact octave into this range. My lowest chest note is a B2 (second B on the piano) but this allows me to get much lower at concerts with microphones. I can also smoothly transition into this register/range/whatever it's called from my chest voice, so many people think it's my real voice. Pretty awesome. My highest chest voice is G4, but ever since I got really good at this, I have not been able to use a single note in falsetto, but I found a range halfway in between chest and falsetto that I can get up to G5 in.

    reading the comments I am surprised of two things
    1. I beatbox and I've been doing the growl for two years now, and as my voice deepened naturally (I'm a teen) the growl has gotten a lot lower too
    2. I never had any pain when learning the growl, the thing that helps me the best is to do a stitch voice with the instructions to the stuff he said to do. For me it made it not hurt and then I started going lower until i got it down
    i hope that makes some sense to people having trouble with the growl

    Hope I'm not too late to ask this, but whenever I try growling, it's SOO airy! If I try recording myself, it just sounds like I'm breathing heavily and there's virtually no actual sound produced, yet I can feel the vibrations, and hear it as I do it (like, straight from my mouth to my ears) Is this normal? I've only ever recorded myself using my phone and the mediocre Apple headphones that came with it, would it sound different if I recorded myself with an actual microphone? Or Am I just doing something wrong? Sorry if I explained it poorly...

    Thanks, great info that seems somewhat tightly held. I remember my Choir director say clearing your throat a lot is a bad idea, voice wise, and he trained some pretty talented professional voices, so be careful, as you wisely mention. Overdoing this could probably cause vocal problems, exactly like the Charlotte Church syndrome (just made that up, I think ;-) ), but totally different. ;-)

    I'd bet with you it's not the false chords that are producing this sound. The setting is very different from singing that involves the false chords. Instead, a partial closure of the epiglottis is required, so I quess it originates from there.
    I'm classified as a baritone, but I've learned to sing down to C2 in "chest voice". However, I can only close the gap to my growl register with a setting (in the growl register) that makes my throat immediatly feel sore. Does this get better over time or is my physiology just not suited to sing those notes with growl?

  • @hanj31
    @hanj31 2 года назад

    I’m a high tenor so even with growl notes I’m at the low end of a chest voice for a normal baritone singer who isn’t a professional singer
