I read that US gun owners buy insurance to cover legal costs (US$20k) even when they shoot e.g. an armed robber in their house. They need a lawyer to file for them at the District Attorney's office so that the gun owner is not charged for the shooting (even justified self protection). Pricey!

Freedom to me means I can go any place without having to worry about being mugged, I can go on vacation without having to worry my house will be robbed, my wife is save, my car will not be broken in, even if I have my laptop sitting on the front seat. These are freedoms that affect me every day and increase my quality of live allot. I feel much safer in China then I ever felt in the USA. As for other things. People have forgotten that freedom without responsibilities and accountabilities is an abuse of their own powers which lead to nothing but chaos and anarchy - "mob rule" and "rule of the jungle". Is this what we want our future generation to degenerate into?

I don’t think the numbers of cars stolen matters as much as the attitude we have towards the criminals, (put aside the catch and release policy we have for another discussion)

      👇
Leave car keys by the front door to avoid home invasion, Toronto police officer says
      Posted March 14, 2024
A Toronto police officer suggested that residents leave their car keys by the front door to avoid a home invasion, seemingly to let criminals steal their vehicle if they break in, leave and avoid injuries.
The Toronto Police Service issued a statement Wednesday confirming that an officer made the remarks at a recent community meeting.
The officer suggested “that people leave the keys to their vehicle in a faraday bag by the front door,” the statement said.
“While well meaning, there are also other ways to prevent auto theft motivated home invasions,” it continued.
Faraday bags block signal-duplicating devices used to replicate key fobs which criminals can use to steal vehicles.
In Toronto, home invasions and break-ins for auto thefts rose 400 per cent last year, the Toronto Police Service said.

All forms of government stifle personal freedom. The Western governments, seemingly led by DC, have gone out of control in quashing civil liberties and personal freedom.
Based on my own personal observation, I have concluded that today, in this very moment, Chinese citizens living in China, actually enjoy far more personal liberty than citizens of the Collective West. The only citizens of the US and the West that appear to be more free seem to be degenerates that suffer from mental illness. Agreed with Gweilo. In the East, people strive to achieve and provide a better life for their families and personal growth in an economic-driven world. In the West, many movements for rights and freedom have sprung up hither and thither, like "Woke" culture stuff and legalizing "Weed" instead, which does not bring betterment in the society.

My wife and children spent a month there but unfortunately I only had a bit more than 2 weeks. I totally agree with your take on freedom. People are friendly, and we never had an uneasy feeling walking anywhere that we chose to go, unlike our major cities in the US. My girls are only 10 years old and they can't wait until our next return. It is a bit hot this time of year, but as always we enjoyed our time in China.

Theres no need to storm stores and take their goods when it’s all cheap and or provided for.

No country has total freedom. Total freedom means *lawlessness.*
Laws exist to limit your freedom. For example, you may not steal, you may not assault people, you may not drive recklessly, you may not damage property (vandalism).
China has laws. They may not necessarily be the same laws that you have in America or Canada or Britain or France. But Chinese laws are there to protect you, to protect society (e.g., incitement to violence or insurrection).

The freedom that You can bash the president of the country DOES NOT mean much at all. It simply SAYS that the GUY (the president) is NOT really in charge of the destiny of the country at all. The one in charge is the CAPITAL, the MONEY. So the president can be replaced as frequently at it is needed and won't matter to the people who have the resources and money. They don't want STRONG, CAPABLE, SMART people as their presidents, because they could loose their control on them. The rich dictates the policy. The policy will always SERVE them.

Meanwhile, in America, you can't drink a beer in public areas, buy you can carry a loaded assualt rifle. Different definitions of freedom, for sure. I'll take China's version, every time.

It is now only over the last few years when a small group of people decided it would be a good idea to not only restrict freedoms but also force their mandates and woke ideas on people, that these countries started to go rapidly downhill. Even with the best of intentions, a small number of people controlling the masses can lead to disaster as they only have to get it wrong once and the result will be unthinkable.
BTW I presume you mean “too” much freedom.

There's a big difference between what the law allows and the freedoms granted to a populace. I'm thinking of freedoms in the same way the some may speak of Human Rights. These are supposed to be unalienable and beyond reproach. Drinking a beer in public in China is "allowed" but is not a "freedom" in the sense that freedoms should be spoken of. That permission could be rescinded tomorrow without any legal recourse being available to the public. Not trying to pick nits but trying to keep it real.

The Chinese people don't have any particular ideology. All they care about is quality of life for themselves and their family and that is being delivered to them by the CPC which makes life better for the Chinese people every year. With the BRI project China is making life better for people around the world. The USA makes life worse for other countries in the world and it's own population is worse off year after year. Which system would one prefer?

Free has many meanings. One is no cost, another is being able to do something without being restricted (taking into consideration societal impacts). But what has been neglected in the West in favor of the second is mental freedom. Do you feel relaxed and not worried something over your shoulder or round the corner? Freedom is also knowing you life is worth something where you won't end up as political fodder or "accidental" casualty by some hysteria stoked by incompetent politicians and you just happen to not look like the majority. Like happened in the UK recently.

But to his religion, sex between consenting unmarried couple within his religious community is immoral for that so called person professing that religion.
