    Another thing you can try is this: follow the rule that *you don’t know it until you can teach it to someone else.* So if there’s a history book I’m reading that I want to remember, I usually just imagine myself telling someone else about it. I will try and recall everything I can about a chapter and tell someone I know about what I’m reading (or just tell myself about it). Inevitably I’m going to realize that I only have like a 2% outline of the chapter in my head. So I start exercising my memory, trying to fill in the gaps. Then I go back to the book. Now I’m *REALLY* paying attention, and I’m trying to answer my own questions, piece together my little mental outline, and fill in the gaps. Then I can talk a bit more intelligibly about it! Then if I keep the dialogue up either with a friend, in my head (or in front of a mirror), as I go back to the chapter it really becomes familiar territory! And honestly, I haven’t had to write a single thing down. I’m not downplaying writing things down, either. Or highlighting. Those are obviously very useful tools, depending on what you’re trying to accomplish.

    Strategy by Matt Morris:
    This is what I've got:
    1.-Book
    2.-Journal
    3.-Pen
    4.-Highlighter
    While reading:
    -Look for the golden nuggets of information
    -Highlight the important bits
    -Rewrite it into your journal
    -Reread your journal, highlight important bits

    First, read a paragragh > think of lines/ ideas that summarises the para > underline/Highlight it.

    Some other ideas:
    1. I take whatever I highlight as an answer to a question I then come up with, thereby creating a Q&A file.
    2. Engaging in discussion groups (on the basis of the Q&A for instance) works wonders. It's the active part of learning, re phrasing, etc.
    3. Writing comments and crossing references. To have the books "dialogue"

      Hi, sorry I didn't see your comment before. With regard to discussion groups, I was thinking of classmates. Of course, if you read a text on your own, it's more difficult. But you might consider read the same text as a friend and discuss it on the basis of Q&A.
      With respect to the 3rd point, for instance, in studying the Surangama Sutra, where it says "Since our eye consciousness is not produced and does not perish, how have we lost track of our true nature?"
      I then quoted another text because I thought it had parallels.
      For instance, "In The Awakening of Faith in the Mahāyāna, it says 'One Mind and its two aspects: One is the aspect of Mind in terms of the (suchness), and the other is the aspect of Mind in terms of phenomena (birth and death). Each of these two aspects embraces all states of existence.'
      And then, I wrote my personnal comment:
      "In the footnotes, it states that the one mind is Buddha-Nature.
      It is reminiscent of the way Śūraṅgama Sūtra speaks of the true mind as well as the conditioned and the unconditioned, here, in section 5.3, etc.
      In addition, Lu Guan Yu translates the true mind as the One Mind."

    This video answers some of my really interesting questions since I've tested many ways and so I count myself kind of as an experienced person in this regard. In the past, I had problems in studying technical books and I've always improved it so now I was really prepared for watching this video and I confirm that there's a lot of worthwhile tips that Matt is recommending here! Please be careful! Watch this video 10 times if you didn't fully understand his reasoning! Before watching this video, one way I improved my studying was exactly taking notes, but now I see I can still improve it. Because just taking notes becomes a distraction for your mind very soon. You see an awesome tip, and you want to write it down, but that's distracting, also you're worried you might forget it if you go ahead, using Matt's technique however, you can reread the highlighted parts just after you finish a chapter, and then write them in your own words, and then try to make sense out of them. Super useful. Thanks Matt.

    Actually did this in preparation for a literature midterm (I read Rousseau's 'Discourse on Inequality' in a week) and it worked like a charm! The reason is because out active short-term memory clutters pretty quickly. But if you hit the text with a goal in mind, keep important notes registered and perform an extra session for compacting those; it's like constantly changing tires on a NASCAR track.

    • @minusone5162
      @minusone5162 8 лет назад

      +gbrsc Haven't read that one yet, but is interesting that Derrida pointed out Rosseau as the first thinker to recognize public texts (or in this case "discourses") as supplementary to speech, and that speech is not even the whole shebang, we cannot make conscious the logocentrism of western culture ... because of its own failure in having a metaphysical basis. Just a thought. Looking forward to read more about Rousseau.

    Highlight notes from a book. To save time, write those page numbers at the front of the book. This gives you quick references.
    Write them out, or type them up into a word document booklet format.
    Print booklet. Now you have a booklet of the book. Go further!
    Take notes of your notes. Now, you have a booklet of the booklet of the book.
    This is note taking inception style. Thanks for the video Matt Morris!

    I've been using the same technique..,I read pdf, ebooks from my laptop ,use the highlight tool in Foxit reader,and i use stick pencils rather than pen for notes.(cause my pencil handwriting is better than my pen writing). Also i use good quality big note books rather than used or old diary.The problem is it take huge time to finish a book,and sometimes i mechanically copy the book into my notebook,not processing the material in real time.This technique is highly inefficient,but very effective.Good for academic stuff,bad for tech learning.
    i usually took ,i month to make it to the end of a book(1500 pj software book).
    Another technique i used sometimes is real time burning of information.This is efficient.. In this ,we progressively learn stuff,in a short time(it should be short),we learn as we read,not taking any notes on separate notebooks but on the book it self(i call it smart notes),stop and process the info,in short period,.and use the already learned info to dig up more.revise the sections as you need.try to memorize.With some practice you can master this technique.
    When you get exhausted after burning a section ,take a 1 hr nap,the brain will process the info,in sleep(you even dream the content of the book).In this way by the end of the book you will practically master the book. Its only effective if you read the book in one sitting.problem is you don't get to refer a well documented notebook.good for mass study of programming languages..

And if nothing matters why would science be considered important if all it does is make life easier/longer? Every story has something good in it. If you choose not to get the perspective if thousands of peoples lives then thats on you. You wont be succesful if you demean peoples beliefs that quickly though just saying

    I follow a similar process but my problem is finding the right things to jot down. I don't always pick up on key points

    • @heybeh12
      @heybeh12 10 лет назад +6

      Just write down whatever WOWs you the most. Any point where you think, that is very true or very knowledable. For example, i LOVE Science, so i read books on science. Whenever i find a scientific fact i highlight it or write it down. Don't make it too complicated, anything you think may be useful, then write it down. Good luck

      heybeh12 how do you pickup vocabulary and grasp it?

    • @heybeh12
      @heybeh12 9 лет назад +1

      Deepankar Adhikari
      With more exposure to words through reading, you'll be able to figure out the correct context in which a word is used - this comes naturally without realising.

    • @deepankaradhikari2410
      @deepankaradhikari2410 9 лет назад

      heybeh12 Thank you very much. Next time when I read a book, I'll make sure to apply this technique. I'm a non native speaker, who is concerned about improving his English. So far, I have been trying to communicate effectively with people, but many of the time they either don't get my accent or the kind of English I speak. This discourages so much and makes me more scared to even speak with Native speaker. I have developed pretty bad habit of becoming anxious before starting conversation, and this has had led to awful situations. I use vocabulary in an incorrect manner, could you suggest me to use it correctly?

    • @heybeh12
      @heybeh12 9 лет назад +4

      Deepankar Adhikari
      Don't worry about your accent man. Just speak and articulate your words clearly so that people may understand. I also have a slight accent even though I was born in an English speaking country when you speak your native language fluently especially when that language isn't related with English you natually develop an accent and you'll never lose it. When engaging in a conversation, use words you know WELL; this is important. However, once you're expose to new words and know how to use them in the correct context by all means use them, but do not overdue it. Also keep conversations SIMPLE; this is very important and when you keep it simpe you'll feel more confident and you will enjoy the conversation. Listen a lot to speeches, debates, interviews is also a very good way and finally READ, READ READ, Reading you can never go wrong, especially in your situation read novels where usually novels have variety of characters engaging in conversation, this is will help a lot. Good luck :)

    Great advise Matt. I like to do a video review of the book I just read and talk about the key points and how it can relate to my life and the audience, then post them on my RUclips channel. This also helps to motivates me to read consistently every week I find. What are you currently reading?

    Modelling is correctly phrased as "Neuro-linguistic programming" (NLP) which is a psychological approach that involves analyzing strategies used by successful individuals and applying them to reach a personal goal. It relates thoughts, language, and patterns of behavior learned through experience to specific outcomes.

    Great Tips! Reading is the best form of learning out there next to watching documentaries. The world is your oyster and you can learn and master any subject you want through reading books and it can be done affordably too by going to the library, thrift stores, or looking for books on sale! I've always taken great notes on the books I read. In my system, I keep in a 3 inch 3-ring binder a running bibliography of the works I've read in separate categories. I use moji notebooks and each book gets its own little notebook where I keep very detailed notes. These are very slim notebooks and don't take up a lot of space and then I file them away on the bottom of my bookshelves in the order of my bibliography and when I need to reference something, I merely look in my bibliography and go to the notebook(s) I need. It takes time to be this organized and detailed but with my writing and researching this system helps so much!

    *Its better if you note down the parts you like, important stuff from the book in your notebook or journal with its page number.
    *Write down sentences that really represent the idea of that book's topic
    *Whenever you want something from that book you just have to see your journal.
    *Reflect on book. Write down your thoughts after reading books.
    *Read different types and genre.
    Most importantly enjoy reading books. Stories help better than reading bullet points.

      +Raphael Leroux Speed reading goes against the way solid learning works. If slow reading can be considered waste of time, speed reading is essentially how to waste time more fast... . Don't letting ourself to consume time is the first reason people learn really slowy and forget quickly.

    When I read a book my phone is always with me. I use notepad and make summary along the reading. every segment or paragraph which I see a value I copy to my notepad (exactly the same process which Matt suggests only with phone). when I get to a new chapter I copy the title and the page number. the third stage is to copy all my notes into a separate word document. (every book has its own document)
    When I finish the book I now have a quick access to the information I need, not for the next month or a year, but to my whole life .
    there is so much advantages to this method. to me reading a book is a life investment.
