3rd gen and up is just too large and dull driving wise the big appeal of 1st and 2nd gen were the whole manual+awd thing 1st gen also is pretty easy to lift or lower
Shaiyan Hossain my 4th gen on BC coilovers rides/ handles very well and is comfortable , I wish it was tuneable engine wise like the 5th gen. The slow 5 speed transmission was ruined because Honda detuned it on purpose. Its K24 atleast and can probably do some tuning but unsure how and the price.
I love, love, LOVE to see strange builds! Particularly builds like this CR-V! If you can find a B20 CR-V with a standard trans for a decent price, cop it! There's just something so insanely cool about see what is an everyman's sh*tbox turned into something that mirrors the owners's personality, and to me, the CR-V is one of the perfect examples of a car that can fit any lifestyle, be made into something super fun, all while remaining very utilitarian.
I have a lifted, B20B 1999 CRV, stock, 134k miles. It was a daily driver from 99 to 2014, now it's an off-roader "project car". We never had any major problems with it in the past 21 years.
My buddy just sold me one of these 180k awd 5 speed for 150 bucks . I had not driven stick in about 5 years but I’m so stoked to have it and he was so happy to get it off his hands . Also clean title also mine is a 2003

My first manual was a 2000 CR-V with 200k miles on it. I miss that thing every day. It might have been a CR-V, but it still loved to be slam-shifted. I learned a lot working on and driving that thing.
Just picked up a 2000 CRV 5spd awd with only 78k miles. Loving this thing.. Just lowered it on BC Coilovers..next is strut bars all around, intake/header/full exhaust and just enjoy it..these mountain roads are a blast with it! Can't wait to have all the strut bars.
I drive a 98 CRV myself. Found it in a garage with 68k and have put 16k on it. Super reliable, super fun, and even gets some compliments for how clean it is. Been wanting to do something similar to this and make her a little quicker but everyone hates on her because she’s an auto.

I’ll give ya a follow. She definitely has a few dents and scratches but very clean for it’s year and runs like a champ, zero issues. Just over 100k miles and it’s a 2001. Just put powerstop brakes on last week, waiting on coilovers and camber kit. Mine is @sendit.crv 👍
Watching this video and David is saying, "OMG, OMG, oh my goodness, I have to let off", as he struggles to stay in the lane. Then and an ad pops up, "Toyota, say yes to lane departure alert"!
I'm sure I wasn't the first to do it, but back in '91 I wrecked my 83 Civic with 1.5L CVCC engine (maybe 1.6... long time ago) and put that engine in an 81 Civic (previous generation and a couple hundred pounds lighter) that had an even smaller engine. That was a hell of a sleeper. When I blew the head gasket on that engine I found a 1.8 from an Accord and that thing was insane until the transmission broke 3rd gear while I was racing a Camaro. I ended up buying the transmission from an Accord and it wasn't as quick, but it was still a monster. The hardest part was figuring out all the vacuum lines, but everything was very similar.
The 1st gen RD1 CR-V's are not to be steeped on. Ive had a B17 swapped CRX for a while. But after moving to a northern state, I realized I needed a AWD to get thru winters. It took a few moths of looking, eventually found a clean 98 5speed. I know everyone is into K-series and I could have gotten a 2nd gen for what I payed for mine. But I still love the old B motors, I am thankful to Honda that we got a oem awd B series platform to source parts for awd GSR civics and awd H2B builds, 85MM pistons, 2.0 low comp blocks for boosting, B20-Vtec's swaps, ect.. Even a base crv is a fun car, GREAT in the Snow and Ice too!!!
note to those who want to buy one for the track, or just to remove some of the sway he mentions at 4:44 - upgrade rear trailing arm bushing to polyurethane - swap rack and pinion to the 97 integra. (this will shorten the amount you have to turn the wheel to steer, thus giving it a more sporty feel.) also, when lowering an rd1, the front sway bar end links will hit the lower control arms. creating a knocking sound which is extremely annoying. so i highly recommend swapping the front sway bar end links to adjustable ones, i also heated the control arm and dented in the area that the end link was hitting to get just a bit more clearance. one more thing. ebay coils are not worth your time, my springs stretched a year into owning them. i pushed those coils to the max throughout the year i owned them though.
When I still had my EK sedan I did wonder what it'd be like to build a CRV like that. The first gen is really just a tall EK with room for awd. Cool build
I have a 2001 CRV and its by far the Best car ive ever owned! (ive had some classics and more modern stuff) i tend to swap my cars every few month because i get bored and love cars lol. i bought a CRV just because it was cheap and i liked the look. The potential they have is huge! they feel well built and are reliable. currently turning mine into a camper and plan on doing some long road trips through Scotland and Europe.
Can confirm...my cousin who is a “Honda only fuck v8’s” type of guy can’t shift for shit and every year or 2 complains about synchro’s and gears going out followed by telling me why another Honda trans he’s swapping in is better than the last...y’all just can’t shift lol, I let him drive my mustang and I made him switch seats...dude was slamming gears while not going above 3000 rpm in normal city driving...never letting him drive my type S been a few years and over 200,000km driven under my ownership and no signs of any wear in the trans with lots of wot driving and “Mexico” car rallies...learn to shift lol and don’t clutch drop! Just let it out slowly you’ll get better traction on a launch and less shock on the trans
you have to think though, the CR-V is built on a strengthened Civic chassis, independent suspension all around, so it does corner A Lot better than you'd think, you just have to know how to shift the weight right and balance it
I have a 2002 that I freaking love! Even if I won the lotto, I wouldn't get rid of it. It may not be the fastest, but it handles like a civic, while having over 8 inches ground clearance.
I feel like you can abuse these crvs. When i first bought my used 2003 crv, i hit on the petal pretty good, to feel it out and my engine sounded pretty smooth. A week of driving later, i did the tune up. The oil was pitch black and my spark plugs looked like they hadn't been changed for about 20-30k miles. I was amazed at how responsive the damn thing still was and how good the engine still sounded. When i did my tune up, the difference in power was instantly noticable but as far as the sound of the engine and the performance, it felt almost the same. CRVs are freaking awesome.
This was my first car except mines was green and automatic lol. If it was a manual I would’ve definitely kept it and it probably would’ve been turbo or used as a donor car to make my EG hatch AWD lol. These cars are amazing especially in the winter you will never have trouble in one of these. I’m a Honda fan boy but I think they’re pretty decent looking for what they are. Mines was slammed on eBay coils and some Ricey mods 😂
4wd system is better in the wagons because it’s a viscous system and not a clutch type diff that the CRV has. less effective in the CRV compared to the wagon components
I live in Philippines and back then my father built a stanced jdm lookin crv and it was a manual! I loved it so much that someday when i earn my own money im gonna build one as well. #hondakidforlife
DUde this is so sick. This is my favorite and only generation of CRV that I like. When i used to work for a parts store there was a guy who lifted his. both him and his wife really likes em and he has a little group that mods these CRVs.
I have a 2003 crv. It's only 2WD, though. :( She's only got 117k miles, bought it off a used lot for $6300. Most people tell me that was way overpriced, and I agree. Since buying it, I've had to fix numerous oil leaks, headgasket, VTC gasket, V-Tech Solenoid gasket. I had to replace the Alternator, Starter, and battery. I have a very slight high pitched, but low volume squeal when I'm moving but not while still that I can't for the life of me figure out. I replaced the oil a few times so far and since I didn't know the full history of the car, I did a transmission fluid flush and that really helped my RPM count. I need to replace all brakes and all rotors because they're all worn pretty bad. And all of this had all started to happen all at once at around 110K miles. I bought it when it had 108K miles. No idea how I got lucky enough to find that low of a mileage on an 03 crv, but I can dig it. I suppose since it hit over 100K miles, it's about that time that everything start breaking down here and there, so I've been doing my best to keep up with it because I love it. The k24 has a TEEEEERIBLE acceleration, but I'm not a racer. I just love honda. :)
the non vtec b series are properly for vtec conversion due to larger block and more torque. So they vtec conversion to get higher top speed with the torque from the b20b they turn it into a b20v, same with hondas that have a b18b will give it head from the b18c or a b16 type r head
Didnt know they made them in manual driven a ton of automatics back when they were newish. Honda manuals are so slick it probably transforms this car. I had driven a few 1st and 2nd gen rav4s
the body roll is reduced if you lower the car, which looks like he needs to lower a bit being on coil overs just spin them down a bit. you were lifting the rear tire off the ground from body roll in fast turns.
Any lower on my current set up & it will smash the inner fender well. I keep it at this height for the needed rebound on most tracks. I am currently putting a Nine Lives Racing wing on to level out the aero, as the front makes so much downforce the rear likes to oversteer. I do plan to chop the front fender supports off & remaking it out of tube to allow for more room
It's hard to argue with the reliability. I don't even like maintaining them because they are typically annoying as hell to wrench on but my daily and my wife's daily ... Hondas. Mine is creeping up on 250k miles and is in overall great shape and everything works. Bought it for $700. I make good money and I still opt for older beater Hondas for our daily drivers. The money I save on initial purchase price, tune ups, gas and not needing to do any major service ends up paying for the things I enjoy. I'll still never build a track Honda but you better believe my track toys are paid for via money I saved dailying one.
I have hrv which is the front wheel drive version and 4 door Great a to be car now parked down the side of garage And now daily a AU Falcon to work in line 6cl 4L I just love the power that son hand
I have a Honda Orthia which is jdm only Honda which is very similar to the honda crv in terms of engines, however the Orthia is a station wagon, essentially a civic wagon which is the combination of a dc2 and eg civic. I own two, one has a b18b and the other has b20b and i am currently tracking my b18b and its a blast.
10:15 It only seems that way because the CRV runs 26" tires. In reality the transmission on the B20 is one of the shortest 5 speeds honda has ever made, 2nd only to the Civic and Integra Type R 5 speed. In terms of overall reduction, the CRV's 1st gear is 15.97 which is on par with the 6 speed on the 3rd gen Fit.
I have a lifted 1998 crv with a 5 speed transmission. The b20b trans has such short gearing. In my car with bigger tires it sits at 3k rpm at 60 miles an hour.
Actually no it's not a simple as buy the parts and slap them on. They originally come with drums in the back on any 1st gen model you have to either make or buy a bracket for around $80 then you gotta source parts and have custom brake lines made.
I saw a CRV, down here in South Florida, that had a supercharger and a beefed up transmission to pull a trailer. It was pretty sweet. Sorry that i didn't buy it to pull the Prelude.
These come OEM with TypeR calipers & pads to match. Your contact patch would be the same, with slightly better clamping power. Check out the Acura RL Calipers & Pads. That will upgrade you to a 12.8" Rotor. Packages can be found at Fat Four Customs
I have a crv and it’s such a fun car to drive with it lowered and on coils. And David was 100% right about them being sketchy because the road will pull you around and they’re kinda floaty but it makes them so much fun to just rip on
The crv is a reliable practical wagon that goes everywhere I've wanted to take it and it does it happily. picnic table out on the beach with family and dogs in tow 👍 Ohhhh yeaaah 😜 A true JDM gem 👍
Two sets... On one Evo... Does that mean you're secretly vouching for them being terrible? The fact that you had to replace them because they presumably broke somehow?
Daniel Nelson nope. Means I love the first set so much I upgraded to a better set. I’ve had tons of coil overs on multiple cars and those were my favorite. Edit: also, the first set I had was a set of Broadway statics with swift springs, which are built b fortune auto. when I had the Evo slammed on CCWs. Then I went wide body on 285s and went with another set geared more for inspired driving.
YEah only seens blown ones in my shop. Better than max-pee ding-rods and meg-an at least. Spend the money and buy at least Koni or Bilstien if you care about your car.
@@nobodynoone2500 had great luck with mine. And would buy them again. First set was about 1 year old then I sold them and bought a new set that was on the car about 5 years.

So happy you posted a video review of a Honda CRV!!!
Practicality done RIGHT! This build is original & inspiring ❣️
Such a sick CRV🙏🙏🔥🔥‼️‼️
I live in Philippines and back then my father built a stanced jdm lookin crv and it was a manual! I loved it so much that someday when i earn my own money im gonna build one as well. #hondakidforlife
DUde this is so sick. This is my favorite and only generation of CRV that I like. When i used to work for a parts store there was a guy who lifted his. both him and his wife really likes em and he has a little group that mods these CRVs.
I need a couple of these. One lifted and one dropped👌🏽
I currently have two trying to sell one lol
@@AWildKappa what year? How much? I’m located in Seattle.
@@yermailmain206 sadly on the opposite side of the continent lol I’m over in New Jersey !
Also Beautiful use of b-roll. The steering wheel lights up when you say it lolol
"No Purrer steering" Ok Donut Media....
Finally a crv I have one too it’s no where near this but it’s has coilovers and wheels
the non vtec b series are properly for vtec conversion due to larger block and more torque. So they vtec conversion to get higher top speed with the torque from the b20b they turn it into a b20v, same with hondas that have a b18b will give it head from the b18c or a b16 type r head
I own an rd1 crv only 145xxx miles it runs and drives great very good in the snow and decent on gas i cant really complain
One of the best car channels on RUclips
The wife and I handed down our 2012 CRV to our daughter and it recently had its first mechanical problem at approximately 150,000 miles.
AWD k24 cry is fun with a lift
LSVtec with the 5spd is a great NA way too
I want an AWD 02 to 06 5 speed and TSX swap it. I just want to keep it simple
mine is a 1997...love it! planning to do some changes!
I drive a 5 speed CR-V... love it!
My father bought it 3 days ago. He wants to modify so i find this video for him
Only thing is they are kinda hard to find in manual cause the market they were for obviously wanted automatics
1990 Hondas were the strident gum of cars back in the day, they just never died
One of the best looking crvs I’ve ever seen
Sick crv build
I have a Honda Orthia which is jdm only Honda which is very similar to the honda crv in terms of engines, however the Orthia is a station wagon, essentially a civic wagon which is the combination of a dc2 and eg civic. I own two, one has a b18b and the other has b20b and i am currently tracking my b18b and its a blast.
Miss my awd 5spd crv has a bunch of jdm bits, hatch mirrors, s2k steering wheel
I have a 99 the one on my profile and I’ve been tuning it for the track but still haven’t gone to the track yet but soon I’ll be uploading some videos
Love seeing original builds like these
I REALLY WANNA SEE A ELEMENT REVIEW 😍😍 always love ur videos David 🤙 especially Honda👏
I love my CR-V. 295000 miles and still going.
The perfect TopHeavy tracktoy. Hotrodding with Honda is a best bang situation...
I saw a CRV, down here in South Florida, that had a supercharger and a beefed up transmission to pull a trailer. It was pretty sweet. Sorry that i didn't buy it to pull the Prelude.
There's a brake set up I'm going to do that uses nsx calipers, prelude rotors, and itr pads
And David was 100% right about them being sketchy because the road will pull you around and they’re kinda floaty but it makes them so much fun to just rip on
Love the vids man keep up the awesome job. Awesome build. Love those sleepers. .
My friend bought one because he had a kid and it looks pretty cool now. He’s obsessed with dumping money into modifying it
The crv is a reliable practical wagon that goes everywhere I've wanted to take it and it does it happily. picnic table out on the beach with family and dogs in tow 👍
Ohhhh yeaaah 😜
A true JDM gem 👍
You passed the worlds dirtiest McDonald’s ever in this video lol.
I can vouch for the fortune auto coil overs. I’ve had 2 sets on one of my evos.
@@danielnelson4881 well you have to replace them at some point, they don't last forever
Thats cool. Ive got an 09 and I'm thinking/planing on lifting it a bit. To do some trail running stuff
This almost motivates me to fix the 97 that's been sitting in the driveway for 3 years
