- I've been wearing this fjallraven no 8 anorak jacket for the last couple if months and I have to say it is a phenomenal item of clothing , here is my bushcraft modelling review of it hope you enjoy atb jj
Got one of these a few years ago. I've put on a few layers of the Greenland wax and use it over the Brecon Beacons in winter. With the hood up in snow, sleet and rain it's like being inside an old school heavy duty Vango Force 10 tent listening to the elements popping off. The long heavy duty tail is good for sitting on rocks or whatever and not having to worry about damage.
Very true my friend i do prefer a jacket thats long in the back for sitting down on things..the hood is hugggggeee lol eh thanks for watching atb jj
I have this jacket and love it but it's worth bearing in mind that it's not waterproof. In showers it'll be ok since it dries quickly but in a heavy down pour you will get wet. It's a pity they didn't put arm pit vents too because you'll get warm if you're hiking. I see it as a more dry cold piece of clothing rather than a wet cold item. Very comfortable to wear.
They did put arm pit vents.
Awesome looking, well designed pice of kit. Maybe I should start saving up.
Great review mate.
I
Really appreciate that my friend thankyou..I know its bloody pricey ...but..as you well know I'm out most days and this anorak will get thoroughly used so after doing my research I chose this and glad I did..thanks for watching atb jj
Love it man! I love brief wander type situations! Like the jacket. I need to ween myself off of my military kit.
Nothing wrong with military kit my friend if it works for you then so be it ...glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching atb jj
Great jacket and great review Justin, as you know I am a great Fjallraven fan myself and have just bought the Fjallraven Granit shirt and looking forward to it being delivered. Atb bud. Stuart
Hey my friend I know you love their kit too lol ..the granite shirt is great you'll love it mate ...thanks for watching atb jj

Great review of this jacket
Cheers appreciate that I need to do an update of it ..thanks for watching atb jj
I do love the Fjallraven clothing and would love a pair of the G-1000 trousers, my only gripe is the cost. I get it's great quality, but the price is out of the range of most people. Maybe one day ay 😉
Thanks for sharing mate 👍
I'm completely with you on that one my understand the cost issues but if you can justify the cost against use and durability of it then it works for me
@William Perkins thanks for the tips, I'll check them out! If I was going to buy any of this stuff I would have to try it on, but that usually comes at a premium in shops. I've seen the trousers cheaper online before, but you take a gamble with the fit.
Fjallraven are no doubt quality, but I don't think the main prices are worth it in my opinion. They inflate the cost for the brand name and they've become the Gucci of bushcraft in some respects.
@William Perkins yep I'm from England lol how could you tell lol...theres alot of people out there seeking good discounted items for sure and that's a good thing too as not everyone can afford the price straight off the shelf...thanks for commenting and leaving those details its appreciated my friend atb jj
Hardwearing bit of kit man. Love the look of it 👌
Suits me for what I want of it my friend and I hope it serves me well
I paid 340 and have used it as a gardener for two years. I wax it regular. It’s superb except in teeming rain. It’s toughness mean it should last 20 years in my opinion and easily reparable by fyallraven. No regrets.
It's a decent jacket for sure and the reason I got this was it does exactly what I need of it ...thanks for watching atb jj
So it does not like heavy rains right? That is my question, where it at least can withstand normal rain for some time. Thanx
Interesting Emma. I am a gardener as well in the south east and am really considering this coat, I love the tail at the back. but for £340 I would like to know I am going to be kept dry, a lot of the comments seem to suggest it’s only shower proof which is a real shame
@@theewhaler I can confirm that it does not keep you dry even with the Greenland wax. It’s extremely hard wearing and comfortable but you get hot in it as it doesn’t vent too well. There are a few fantastic New Zealand brands that I’d recommend for that waterproof effect
G1000 is NOT waterproof!
Good review that pal 👍Although the jacket is expensive
Appreciate that my friend..I know its bloody expensive..the brand isnt everyone's cup of tea...but for me it does just what I need if it...thankyou for taking the time to watch my friend atb jj
You sold me on this, Purchased it for almost half the price, will be testing it out in the Sierra Mountains this winter in heavy snow
Glad too hear you got this jacket at a great price I hope it serves you well over winter 👍
Nice video. I liked your review.
Thankyou my friend appreciate that atb jj
I have this anorak and love it, but it clearly performs best at below freezing temperatures, or in high intensity activities near freezing, or in dry cool weather. The jacket isn't waterproof but is an excellent robust windshell. That isnt a problem and there are many situations when waterproof or goretex garments perform far worse than polycotton. Sitting still in a downpour is clearly not the target activity of G1000 stuff.
Basically youll be most comfy wearing it in a snow and wind, in a blizzard or in conditions when you sweat so much that you're better off getting rained on.
I use it for example for winter commute biking in all conditions except pouring rain, and am happy down to -20C with two layers of wool underneath. I also use it for winter hikes and xc ski touring if it is windy and cold enough. Im not convinced that Britain has the most suitable climate, except the Antarctic Peninsula perhaps.
Otherwise the size is generous, I usually wear XXL but this anorak feels big in XL. The hood will go over a helmet. The sleeves are oddly enough on the short side, which us this jackets greatest shortcoming in my opinion.
I gotta say it's has it all covered. I couldn't afford it so I'm not thinking of buying but I wish you success in it. I'm certain it will perform. Mark
It's not everyone's cup if tea mate due to certain factors but this is just my take on it thanks for watching atb jj
@@JJ_OUTDOORS Aaah, a good jacket but to much for me. I reckon it will be a goodun for ya.
@@WyeExplorer blooming well hope so lol
Great review thank you
Thankyou appreciate that 🙏
Love it.
Cheerd my friend thankyou atb jj
You look great!!!!!!!
Thankyou my friend atb jj
that strap that goes between the legs and clips in at the front; you've put a knot in it to stop it swinging around when not in use, but just looking at the video at 9:33, does it not go through the loop and then into the popper fastener? Can't think what else the loop would be for, and running it through would definately take up some slack.
Спасибо!
Those first few seconds...”behold.” 😂
Hahaha i just had to the watch the beginning of this again lol...and behold he wearers a new jacket 🤣🤣

Did you test it in the winter? If so, was there soak through from a snow fall? I bought this coat based on your review and it's proclaimed features by company. I'm hoping it can hold up in a 7hr hunt in the on & off snowy weather in a 2 month hunting season. The odd day we're exposed to a heavy snow fall in a day. Hoping it dries fast and that I keep warm when it's wet, with the proper layers that is.
Problem here in the UK down south is for the last few yrs there's barely been any snow ❄️ to test it out in..however saying that I have waxed it more heavily on the shoulders etc and it's held up better than expected ..still not water proof as I once thought it was but more durable ...with proper layering up it should do OK
@@JJ_OUTDOORS there's been more snow down south In the last few years than the previous 30!
Hi JJ what’s the fit like as in compared to your normal jacket say L or XL
The fit I would personally say is a little on the bigger side ..so if you where normally day a large it would be worth trying a medium on...but this fits me perfectly when in wearing correct layers ..jj
How tall are you and what size did you get? A lot of reviews reccomend getting a size smaller.
I'm 5ft 10 tall and its a small..definetly recommend going a size down..it looks big but when you pull in the side sinch zips it pulls it all nicely together
HI man, Just purchased one of these £100 off on amazon, i was wondering are the zips YKK, nothing labelled on mine and the side zips feel quite poor.
Never had a problem with the zips on mine and its been used loads my friend
Deffo an "anorak" its a hooded, pullover head outer layer that covers the hips, its literally the definition of an anorak. A smock is a type of overalls to protect the clothes underneath, painters, lab techs even surgeons would wear.
I believe the use of "smock" as a word for coat originates in the British army, like a lot of British army slang it's confusingly inaccurate.
Pretty true I'd say
How are the size fits? I'm on the border of most jackets between XL and XXL. Is it a loose fit?
Hello my friend..I reckon you'd be OK...mine is a medium...and it is huge ..they definitely come up big for sure
@@JJ_OUTDOORS Thanks for the info! Cheers!
Helikon-tex makes this one in the form of the woodsman anorak. It has all the features but with bigger side zippers, more organizing in the front pocket and without the annoying front button flap that you never use. Both have the same tightly woven polycotton mix that you can wax to improve water resistance. Both have all zippers in YKK. Helikon-tex has more stretch in the back material to improve movement and since the back doesnt get hammered all the time. The No. 8 costs 470 euro and the woodsman costs 94 euro. Fjallraven will make you believe g1000 is not the same material. If you understand materials you will know it is EXACTLY the same material. They will claim its because its tightly woven. All of the polycotton in army clothes are tightly woven. They will say : but you can wax them. All the polycotton in army clothes can be waxed. So please do not get ripped off. Unless you wanna pay 5x for just a cheap leather stamp on the jacket and some strips of leather on the zips you can make yourself for 5 euro.
Thats really interesting to know my friend
@@JJ_OUTDOORS Yes i am not affiliated. They are from Poland i am from Holland. But i urge you to give them a try and specially the 'Woodsman Anorak'. I did not make this comment to bash on people buying Fjallraven because i did the same. I made it to help people find this hidden gems online. Have a good one mate.
@@dimi7055 no worries my friend
Thanks for that, much better
Theyre on Amazon for 135 USD, but the build quality looks a lot lower as well as the hood design being very different. Idk what Helikon tex's warranty is, but I know Fjallraven's is pretty good. Pay for what you get, I guess.
thank you for the review
tbh, now that HelikoTex released their "Pilgrim" line, they made this fjallraven obsolete, as you get their own brand of g1000 (nearly the same, except with 2% elastane, still just as durable), with a much better, more sensible design and many more features... and it costs a fourth of the Fjallraven. hell, you can even go "a bit lower" and get their other (woodsman?) which is like 20-30% cheaper than the Pilgrim, has somewhat less features (still comparable if not more/better than Fjallraven) and is half made of their stretchy material instead of the g1000 copy
as much as i love Fjallraven, their prices are outrageous for what you get 90% of the time.
Compketely with on that pilgrim line..having seen it in person I agree what your gettinv for the money is awesome
What size it that your have??
Believe this is the medium ..which in hindsight is too big tbh would have been better suited to a small.
What are your pants?
They are fjallraven lapland hybrid trousers 👖
Is this for winter as well?
I've never found it to be yhe warmest of jackets in winter so I properly layer up underneath it
@@JJ_OUTDOORS
Oh okay. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.🙂
Love it but same as ate can’t afford that sort of money for that or the trousers. Which is sad for the majority if people that would use it but the company’s Bt care about the people only the money they can charge it’s such a shame
Well that's pretty much a downer of a comment on my vid mate but understand what you mean
northhertsbushcrafter jj soz mate didn’t mean it like that it’s great kit and I’d love it but the consonant make it impossible for people like me to get
@@paulsoutdooradventures1790 I know what you mean thankyou
Is this a medium size that you are wearing ?
No this is a small..they do come up on the big size though...jj
@@JJ_OUTDOORS Hey, I hope your still enjoying the awesome smock! I know its been a long time since your comment, but can I ask what your chest size and height is please JJ?
@@Cookie-yl8uq hey my friend..chest size 40 height 5ft 10
@@JJ_OUTDOORS Thank you!
Trouble with Fjallraven they admittedly over charge, they say the increased price goes into charities. This anorak should be £100 less than it is.
Personally I think fjallraven falls short in every area over their competitors except maybe the vida Pro trousers. Personally I go with Swazi for all mid and outer layers as they wipe the floor with Fjallraven.
I'd have to agree with you on the jacket now ..it is way overpriced for what it is ..the trousers 👖 I swear by though
Now if they could make it fire resistant to the level it’s water resistant (waxed)...my pants, made of the same materials burn through way to easy...
I keep mine pretty well.waxed which helps
Great review JJ. I really like the features on this anorak.
dlmon1, you've had some burn holes in the material? I was wondering about that. I have G1000 trousers and am cautious about sparks from the fire being that they are 65% recycled polyester. None so far. It was for this reason that I am considering a Boreal Mountain Anorak although I suspect it is heavier, more so went it's wet...but more fire resistant around the camp fire.
Ya I burned through several pairs of the pants (G1000)...Great light weight gear but for me, I switched back to the old school wool and/or Duck Waxed Canvas for times I depend on fire...
Yes...burn holes and cuffs melting at feet. The G-1000 material also easily melted and burned my leg from a motorcycle exhaust...
Can ride all day in regular old Levi’s without a problem...That material doesn’t like heat...
i think i would be to busy watching that i didn't rip it or melt it to enjoy myself, have more fun,get an old army smock and carry a waterproof
My friend this jacket is bombproof and I dont have any concerns on the wear and tear of it but thanks for your input atb jj
@@JJ_OUTDOORS if your happy, thats what counts

Nice review but you must say too that it is not 100% waterproof.
How tall are you and what size did you go with?
I'll check the size when I get home from work but think it's a medium...but thats still big on me ...im 5ft 10 , 42 inch chest
@@JJ_OUTDOORS Thank you so much I’m 5/9 got the M ,enough space inside for fleece or wool sweaters, still happy with yours?

Nice, are they worth the price?
Well I'd definetly say so my friend without a doubt ..yes its bloody expensive and most wouldn't spend out that much ..I get that completely..but I'm able to justify it by the amount if wear it's going to get and take so me for me it's a winner
@@JJ_OUTDOORS I agree man, some of my bushcraft on a budget item as are expensive, but the length of time they last makes them worth it

@@JJ_OUTDOORS thank you so much I just ordered XL and I think it is way too large . I live in the ski area and I will be having couple of layers and daunjacket underneath my boyfriend say is gone be too big ( I am a woman :-) anyways we will see . it was very expensive
@@michaelhein2914 totally get that I will check as soon as I'm home 🏡
@michaelhein2914 I just got home and checked..mine is actually a small !!! I'm only 11 and half stone 38 inch chest ..I generally have to wear a good couple of layers underneath this or it just floats on me..they definitely come up big in the sizing for sure
@@JJ_OUTDOORS thank you 🙏
I have this jacket and although it’s beautiful it’s not the best choice for countries like the Netherlands, where i live, or the UK because of its rainy climate and it is not waterproof.
I've had this jacket a few yrs now..tbh I don't wear it a great deal...its not water resistant enough even when it's waxed...which tbh in the UK is a must ..however saying that ..its so robust you van just breeze past brambles without fear of it ripping 🙏
@@JJ_OUTDOORS Yes, i’ve waxed it a few times but that’s not enough. On my long walkings i often regrets wearing this anorak because it start raining, so now i switched to my old raincoat again :-) But the anorak is indeed very robust and ideal for chilly snowy weather and dry periods.
@@MrElecterik with you on that one my friend
