I bought this anorak several months ago and we're finally getting weather in which I can use it pretty regularly while hiking. I used Nicwax TX on mine and I'm really happy with the results. You are 100% right about the sizing. I would normally go with an XL for a jacket that I plan on wearing layers underneath. With a large, I can comfortably wear a base layer and a merino wool sweater underneath it without any restriction of movement. For the price I don't think you can beat this one. On a side note, my experience with the jacket led me to purchasing their Pilgrim pants. All I can say is that I'm very happy that I didn't spend twice as much (or more) on a pair of Fjällräven pants.
I’ve been using this anorak for about half a year and I was amazed by its quality and ease of use: lots of pockets and good breathability! Thank you for another ad rem review, Luke!
Just a quick comment. I'm not an anorak type guy I prefer the coat style. But even things your reviewing and or doing that I'm not interested in, I find interesting and well done. Honest and sincere. So I end up watching anyway. Thanks Luke. Keep up the great work. And LIVE LIFE LARGE! It's shorter than you think.
Based on your reviews I got interested in the Pilgrim jacket. Bought one off ebay and am extremely pleased with it. Your review of this jacket was totally accurate in every way. A very trustworthy source of information. Many thanks.
Luke I love the fact that you test items over months of different conditions. 99% of reviewers will take something out once and then review it, if they actually use it in the field at all.
Excellent review. At 3:24 you say "You're not going to feel the cold metal teeth against your skin".......I had no idea you'd ever met my mother in law!
I can highly recommend Nikwax's Cotton Proof! It also works well with Fjällräven's G-1000 fabrics. It does leave a bit of an odd, waxy smell, but that fades away very quickly.
I have the same jacket and I love it! The inside webbing are really good for clipping your gloves when your not using them and keeps them warm. The fact that it’s spark resistant is amazing and use it over my puff jacket and not worry too much about being close to the fire. Great review! Thanks!
Good to see more testing of outdoor clothing. Whilst not all of us can live the woodsman lifestyle, we all want good clothing which does what it is supposed to do, and which offers value for money. As you say, you can spend huge amounts of money on certain clothes and clothing lines... however the majority of us want to purchase quality products, which don't break the bank. No one wants to buy rubbish, or purchase things which don't do what they say they do. Thanks for your unbiased reviews and commitment to help your viewers make educated decisions and purchases. Everytime I search out products I want or am curious about you always seem to have a review on it. You always have the best gear, totally jealous. This is probably the reason why I'm subscribed to your channel. 😀 🙏✌️✌️💪❤️
Hi all, I totally agree with everything Luke mentions in this video. I totally love this jacket. I've gone one steps further however and did wax this jacket and it does a very good job of wicking away rain and water from a mild drizzle to a medium downpour of rain. And it still dries quickly enough in front of a fire. As for ventilation with the wax, it's still quite good because of the large front zip, pockets and armpit zips. I totally recommend it also. Awesome review Mr. Lone Wolf!!!
I like the idea of it being breathable. Being that you could open up some of those zippers and if you were carrying a pack you get some airflow inside so you don't sweat. Say you don't have to keep stopping taking it off putting it on that makes life so much more simple.
Luke, I think you do a great job of showing off the features of items you are reviewing. Thanks for being thorough and agenda free. I would be baking to death in all those layers at 50 degrees though!
Recently bought this jacket since I needed a fabric that was more breathable than Gore-Tex of similar. For anyone in Europe wondering about the size, the European size is accurate/similar compared to other brands like Arc'teryx or Bergans. I figured since this jacked looks military it might be bigger than usual, but if you're above average fit and muscular so you need to go up a size in other clothes, then you have to do the same with this jacket. I'd say the design is more normal than the military type where they usually add way more extra space. I'm six feet/183cm tall and used to wear medium before I started working out a lot. Now I have to use at least large and the Pilgrim jacket in large fits as it should. Edit- Tested the jacket out for the first time today in -5c, and noticed something that's a bit annoying. The hood is really not that big from top to bottom, so when I was wearing a thin woolen hat the jacked would rest on the top of my head rather than my shoulders. By thin hat, I mean like less than 0,5cm thick. Other than that the jacket seems to be pretty much spot on.
I almost bought either this one or the Woodsman, but went with the Snugpak Venture Pile shirt ( smock/ anorak) instead. Unlike most outer layers, its meant to be worn on its own and not part of a traditional layering system. This is because it's insulated with their super thick Pile that's almost like a very long stranded and dense fleece which allows it to be extremely moisture wicking. Its outer material isn't as durable as the Helikon models, but its got a ton of other features that, to me, make up for it. Snugpak has recently stopped making them though to sell off their stock in anticipation of an updated version that's being released in January . I've also got the matching Venture Pile pants and have worn them together comfortably below zero so far. They are DEFINITELY worth checking out and have performed very well for me so far. I recently did a vid showing them up close for my channel if anyone is interested. Great vid Luke, I think I might have to pick one up anyway now to replace my old Fjällraven Telemark shell/jacket. ~ Chesapeake
If they included the full side zips like the woodsman i would buy this right now. Thanks for the reviews; best reviewer of ANYTHING on youtube. Now to decide, woodsman vs pilgrim.
I've owned mine for a little longer than a year and love it...features and performance of jackets/anoraks costing several times more...(think fjallraven)...no regrets, love it every warming need.
Top Tip! put the belt of your back pack through the front pocket so you can still keep your hand warm. Buffalo the company actually make them for this purpose. not sure if Helicon intend for that to be done but it works well!!!!!
When I first noticed you wearing this jacket I thought it was from Fjallraven until I shopped for a good hiking shirt. I found one by Helikon Tex, the SFU Next Shirt for $48, and I absolutely love this shirt with the multiple pockets and just its old military design in general. The HT jacket looks superb on you and now I want one; price is more than reasonable. I also want their Patriot Fleece in the Polish woodland camo. Those two sternum pockets seem to be ideal to insert two large packets of hand warmers. I love the "flow-thru" hip pockets, the way I like the ones on my hoodies. Gloves and whatever else (wallet and cell phone) you put in them don't fall out like they do from regular pockets. Your pro tip is a good one that I learned from a match fishing friend of mine in England. He used Nikwax on all of his fishing outfits as England's fishing weather always seems to be in rain and/or fog. I bought an English RAF jacket and immediately applied Nikwax to it. Anyway, Helikon Tex never ceases to amaze me with the quality of their products. As far as a velcro patch, you could have a non-adhesive panel sewn on by an expert seamstress. Your TOGR patch goes with me wherever I go as it's become part of a large collection in my Jeep...my patch rug.
Great review, thanks. Nikwax recomends using TX.Direct when the synthetic contend of the fabric blend is above 50%. I have used TechWash and TX.Direct on 65/35 PolyCotton and it works great.
Thanks for the video, most people don't realise but I have found from experience that DWR's (Durable Water Repellency's) impede breathability, but it's a trade off at the end of the day.
Nice! I'd love to see the spark resistance claim stress tested, especially after the Nikwax Cottonproof treatment as I went that route myself with the pants from the same series that I recently bought and that this was a factor in not going full synthetic for me. Used them with a simple base layer under for sleeping in the woods, foraging and some A-to-B cycling. Very happy so far, especially considering value for money. Lots of great design choices, very comfortable to move around in.
I mentioned my personal experience with Helikon in your Woodsman review. Two items of clothing you might like to review: 1. Buffalo Special 6 Pile Shirt - British designed for Military outward bound training and mountain rescue, with a very different ethos on outdoor clothing. (There’s also the Mountain Shirt which is a bit shorter). 2. Varusteleka Sarma Windproof Anorak: your favourite Finns have produced a great poly cotton smock type anorak which costs less than the Woodsman.
I normally think that much of the gear reviewed on this channel is overpriced- sometimes hugely. But this really does sound like a very good deal given that it's going to be durable/long-lasting and it's versatile so you'll wear it often enough to make the cost worthwhile. It's going onto the bucket-list...
I am in the UK and got a small size and that fits fine, I usually buy size small, so have no issue with the sizing unlike my Swanndri ranger shirt in small, which seems huge!
Hi Luke, I’m a big Helikon fan here in the UK. I have the trooper soft shell jacket which is lighter weight than yours. Plus it has Velcro for patches. I virtually live in their OTP versastretch trousers and love the cobra modular range belt which I wear under my duty belt at work. Great vids - strength and honour bro.
Been buying a lot of Varusteleka stuff lately. Too many Velcro patches! Actually took a seam ripper and removed two large shoulder patches. Have my eye on the H-T Pilgrim Anorak and am glad they don't have Velcro. Stuff just collects burrs.
Looks like a good jacket,, I like your reviews are a big help,, I have purchased things in the past ,, then see you do a review on it and tend to agree with your results ,, unfortunately with some purchases,,I lost... I don't like sending things back ,, post office not close or open only short hrs. and UPS is even farthur, , ,so it winds up put aside and forgotten until I can give it away ...much prefer to buy from physical outlet,, but now live where there are none and internet buying is pretty much only way to get makes/models of gear without taking a 2-day trip,, just to not find item desired...sizing is SO inconsistent, that I shy away from good clothing gear ..until I see others with it and get opinions ,,then still take a gamble on fit... This item looks and sounds from review like something I would like and as mentioned ,, priced where I can buy ,, even with the sizing risk...usually things are way to small,, so go through the hassle of returning and wind up without because sizes are limited... ...Thanks for the review .. ..... Stay Safe and God Bless .....
Bit late to the party with this one. Personally I'm happy that it doesn't have the velcro patches so it doesn't look too tacticool. I like the low key look of the anorak.
@@Legionnaire7777 I've not used it as a mountain walking jacket yet,I have used the woodsman out on the hills and it is good. So am hoping that the pilgrim is going to be as good.
Great review! I bought this jacket about a year ago and love it. The mesh ventilation pockets work great and there are plenty of them. I also have there shorts pants gloves and some of there gear. Great products and glade to see you reviewing Helikon Tex items.
I currently use the MBDU pants as regular walking pants. They are great! Helikontex is a great company... im slowly changing my wardrobe in a fully helikontex setup. Really worth it!
Helikon-Tex makes a Dragon Egg backpack. Thought you might do a review. Always like to hear your agenda free review on items. Still my favorite channel, keep up the great work.
I bought the Woodsman anorak last month along with the Helikon Tex SFU Next Mk2 Cargo pants. Love both of them and really recomend you check out SFU pants too. The price of these is spot on for these pants.
No Velcro® (Other hook and Loop systems are available) is a plus for me - too many jackets now have it everywhere! One reviewer complained about the lower 'roo pocket only have a warm lining on the outer face - think they failed to understand the mesh on the inner was probably intended as part of the venting system... Had mine (in Taiga green) for a while now and the sizing (L - I'm 5' 11", 44" chest) is right. But it means that wearing anything too bulky like a thick fleece (e.g. Polartec 200 thick) makes it a bit of a struggle donning and doffing the Anorak. Yet to see how resistant it is to rain as only worn it out in mizzle - but have Nikwax proofing for other garments so will use that when needed. ((I have an excellent Páramo Cascada jacket which I've had for about 30 yrs and still withstands downpours, with regular Nikwax reproofing, so that covers wet weather hikes) For the price (£84 in UK at time of purchase) the quality is excellent (as is all the H-T gear I have purchased) and it will probably get plenty of use.
Hi Bob - could I ask what size you went for and your dimensions? I’m about to order one and I’m 6’4, 180 lbs - (1.93/82 kg) fairly lean and I really don’t want it baggy fitting. 😉
have one love it.own a lot of their stuff always amazed by great quality at very fair price. Features and fit often better than much more expensive brands at a fraction of the price.recommended!
Excellent reviews. On Helicon's anoraks, only thing I'd wish for is a back pocket. Nice to keep a vest/gloves/balaclava/etc. Things I always want with me, but things that are bulky up front when doing bush things.
Hey there Luke, outstanding review as usual! If you had to choose only one between this or the woodsman anorak from Helikon, which one would you get and why?
Hey Luke, I’ve been looking for a quality alternative to the Fjallraven product that is durable and not cause me to remortgage the house. Thanks for the review!
The Fjällräven No. 8 weighs a tonne! Especially once half waxed. It’s a quality product ofc but the hood is so huge it becomes cumbersome with a backpack on.
@@InimitaPaul Love my #8, wearing it in the thumbnail. I like the Helikon stuff, and yes, it's cheaper than the Fjallraven, but what I use my Fjallraven stuff, requires the weight and strength...I have the same Vidda Pro pants from six years ago, and they look new. Having said that, now that I have all the Fjallraven I need, it will be Helikon-Tex from here on.
I love it and the fact that it won't burn when spark hit it is great and all them pockets and it looks good I currently used a Ridge line smock as much as I like it it gets holes in it if a spark lands on it thanks for a great review atvb jimmy from England 😎😎👍👍
So is it safe to asume, that the Anorak is designed to be a little bit more spacious than normal clothing (t-shirts, shirts etc.) I am also size S with shirt and t-shirts and jackets size M. So should I take the anorak in size M or L to be worn over size M softshell jacket? Thanks in advance :)
I have a REI brand shell jacket something like that, not as long,100% polyester, water resistant but not waterproof, very breathable. Also want to give a shoutout to all my fellow US military veterans for Veterans Day.
Anything Helikon is worth the monies!! The armpit zippers are a must for me when buying a water tight jacket... I get too hot especially one doing any kind of moving and I have to ventilate this way especially if it is cold and rainy you know how it goes once you get wet in the cold! ☃ Another great review man 👍
Ive had problems getting one of these, due to stock. I've been trying to order one in Tundra Green, for two years. The opening of the US Market has screwed over the European Market. I have several smocks I use. ANd I like them because of the ability to have a full zip front. These are mostly wind proof. You wear a wool shirt under it, and it works better in wet weather.

Sew on your own velcro, it is easy. And most people probably don't want the velcro on their jacket (we don't do patches).
Velcro is a nice place for pine and spruce needles to be stuck into :D

Thank you for sharing your review of this product , God Bless you and your family
((I have an excellent Páramo Cascada jacket which I've had for about 30 yrs and still withstands downpours, with regular Nikwax reproofing, so that covers wet weather hikes)
For the price (£84 in UK at time of purchase) the quality is excellent (as is all the H-T gear I have purchased) and it will probably get plenty of use.
Brilliant review looking to buy one but not to sure of size. Going to buy one now to go with my pilgrim trousers. Thanks
great review, bought one based on this, thankyou
I like both the green and brown.
Would like to see shoulder pockets but not a deal breaker for me
I have one and its great and the company was big help in sizing great product as Luke said
Hi Bob - could I ask what size you went for and your dimensions? I’m about to order one and I’m 6’4, 180 lbs - (1.93/82 kg) fairly lean and I really don’t want it baggy fitting. 😉
A few years ago you recommended a cammo surplus rain jacket. It was awesome, but the zipper just started disintegrating. Bummer! I loved it.
have one love it.own a lot of their stuff always amazed by great quality at very fair price. Features and fit often better than much more expensive brands at a fraction of the price.recommended!
Thanks friend...great review...I like this jacket....
Having said that, now that I have all the Fjallraven I need, it will be Helikon-Tex from here on.
..the good ones sell out fast..good one stay safe..
Great review! Probably warmer than I’d need, but this company seems to be putting out quality gear.
Just received this in large. Very bag but I can make it work. Especially since I heat up the easily, probably for the best
*baggy
My favorite channel
I love it and the fact that it won't burn when spark hit it is great and all them pockets and it looks good I currently used a Ridge line smock as much as I like it it gets holes in it if a spark lands on it thanks for a great review atvb jimmy from England 😎😎👍👍
Nice review Luke. I'm a huge fan of Nixwax, and use it on my LL Bean 3-in-1 outer shell.
Another great review man 👍
Without a doubt. Wow!
