Apostrophe and Roxy an Elsewhere got me hooked, with posters and a lifelong Zappa obsession, starting in 8th grade, when I played keys in our junior high school touring jazz band! A Zepplin/Hendrix/Deep purple fanatic played these two albums for me, one day, and I couldn't believe someone can mix all styles,brilliant composing, but keep it a good funky rock sound in there ,with all of Zappas aberrations and chaotic 12 tone phrases. I never forget the first question to my friend. Who is this guy. What does he look like. My friend responded - "Has has a mustache". A few weeks later, he shows up and has a bootleg of a table at a diner, with a crushed dead fly on this cover, called "'worst of the mothers"". Anyone remember that one? So, I too was played ""Help I'm a rock"" on that bootleg, after hearing the Roxy and apostrophe album, so this earlier album bootleg, was fascinating to hear this mustached guy doing this style back then. I got further hooked, then flipped out totally when listening to franks 200 motel orchestral scores. Symphonic music in the level of Beethoven and Stravinsky! Mike and I are the same age,him growing up in west Nassau county long island and I was just 20 miles east of him all that time,in south shore Islip/ oakdale. Steve Vai was close by as well around levittown.. A huge amount of life long Zappa fanatics have apparently been developed,on Long island, just east of NYC.A few of them got the GIG!
It was a pleasure talking to Mike, he is really a very kind guy. Looking forward to see him this summer at Zappanale Festival, I keep my fingers crossed!
Me too. The Music of FZ and MK will come together in Bad Doberan, Germany, at Zappanale Festival this summer. Mike is one of the guys, who keep his music alive.
Sofa was part of the »Sofa Suite« which they performed frequently in 1971 with the Flo & Eddie Band. You can hear the suite as part of the legendary Swiss-Fire Show, the smoke-on-the-water thing. Ich durfte 1975 in Berlin Deutschland Halle mit 15 Jahre Sehen. Nur weil mein Bruder mich mit genommen hat bin ich über Haupt rein gekommen habe zappa noch mal 4 mal sehen dürfen. Was für ein Ohren Schmaus
I found a setlist in the archiv, must have been from the zappateers website: therefore it could be »Journey into the Dark Underbelly of Prog Rock« with this incredible guy performing »Skull Bubbles«. Am I right?
Mike is one of the nicest people I have ever met. Every time I've run into him he's been warm and friendly.
