- In honor of Gabe Kaplan retiring from poker commentary, we share with you the final hand of the 1997 World Series of Poker Main Event and the accompanying winner interview. This moment in poker history marked the final time we'd ever see poker legend Stu Ungar play a televised event and also his last-ever tournament cash. Ungar won $1,000,000 for winning this event and sadly passed away on November 22 1998 at the age of 45.

Gabe Kaplan in his younger years. Awesome footage. He was the best commentator of all time!
*is
I was about to say the same😂
Gabe Kaplan is the best old or young.
@@zachfern3190 No, he retired.
@@Radimunto He still commentates high stakes poker
As a recovering addict the line "the only one who beat me was myself and my bad habits" is so incredibly powerful. So devastatingly true. Doesn't need to be read in terms of winning at a game, just living life. If you're an addict, you are your own worst enemy and it is so hard to win that battle and come out smiling
If Stu had stayed clear of the demons, there's no telling how far he could have gone. He was easily one of the smartest card players the world has ever seen.
He won the World Series of poker twice , how much father could he go
Actually he won it 3times
He could have won it 4x but...
@@joshua-nf3rxHe won it 3 times, not twice.
I was the smartest he could have gone further so this is nonsense
That hesitation after Gabe asks him if he's going to do it differently this time. smh. he knew his own demons all too well.
Most addicts do..Trust me.
It’s still crazy how they held the wsop FT on Fremont street
Stu Ungar was a situational and mathematical genius.
The greatest card game phenom of all time.
Wow, historic footage. Gabe Kaplan is my favorite commentator in poker it's sad he's retiring. Well deserved retirement though
Gabe is a legend and he's the best..
"Now that you won the tournament, are you gonna turn your life around?"
"No one can beat me at cards."
😭😭i was like bro didnt even answer the question at all
I picked up that one. Almost like he caught himself on what he was saying and it hit him on the inside so he skirted around the topic
He said I hope so Gabe first.
@@billj4525I know, but he then emphasized his prowess at cards even though it had nothing to do with the question.
@@justinhe8295 thats because he knew the answer
Awesome throwback footage
I miss these tournaments. This was when the best of the best butted heads for a million bucks. They were always great to watch.
One of the GOAT in Poker! Loved High Rollers movie
Can you tell me how he would fare against modern greats? Lets say PA durrr ziggy ivey etc played against Stu
@@matebreskovic5880 Pretty well
He wouldn't do well against the modern greats because of the evolution of the game and solvers. Poker is a game that evolves all the time, and you have to be playing the best in the world to keep on top of your game. Stuey got crushed in the cash games even back then, but he was the best tournament player in the world by far. I would say with practice he could do very well in tournaments today, but it's hard to say how well, that's just speculation. He had insane insane talent though.
Knowing what happened after makes this heartbreaking.
exactly
Can someone fill me in
@@patrickmacasaet3493
he died because of heart desease in 1998 caused by drugs, so that's the reason he was asked such a questions in the interview..
@Born Bad aw man that's awful, I know he's a GOAT of poker but didn't know the cause of his death, thanks for sharing that
@@patrickmacasaet3493
so u can see his nose, it's fell through, it' not smooth.. it happens when you sniffing drugs.. so it's the reason of him wearing his glasses on the tip of the nose..
Absolute legend of poker, and gone too soon!
Can you tell me how he would fare against modern greats? Lets say PA durrr ziggy ivey etc played against Stu
@@matebreskovic5880 if he just resurrected today he'd get annihilated, computers have done way too much to improve high level play. had he been around the whole time, he would prob crush
playing in the middle of Fremont Street? love it.
Merci pour cette vidéo d'archives sympathique
No one could beat Stu but himself is the most accurate statement of all time
He would be dead in a cheap motel room 1 year later with drugs found in his system. His death was determined to be heart failure after decades of drug abuse. Absolutely tragic.
I am glad they have the cameras so we can see what they have and understand what they are doin g
The best poker player ever is Stu Ungar 🏆
Can you tell me how he would fare against modern greats? Lets say PA durrr ziggy ivey etc played against Stu
@@wondervalleysally I would 4-bet squeeze him in cutoff with rags like I do in my game. Shame its play money😂🤑 couldnt resist an emoji
@@matebreskovic5880If he's clean prime vs prime nobody can beat him in poker as well as in gin rummy
Best tournament player of his time is a more accurate description of Stu. Some says the best tournament player ever, which is reasonable too.
It's such a shame that he couldn't stay clean. He blessed with lick and talent in all card games. Would love to know where his records would be today. Also would love to see a movie made on his life. Lets get this done.
Is a movie on his life already
already a movie on hime he was portrayed by the guy that play cristopher moltesanty in sopranos
There is a movie about his life. It's called High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story (2003). I do not recomment it though, it's absolute garbage!
@@NVOLIKOSwould you recommend the book one of a kind?
@@beaufildes6306 It's excellent, yes. I have listen to it on audiobook a few times.
It's 2023 and all us Poker Players click on a 1997 video...
Stu was the man!
Love that old school ✌❤
“Look out next year”. How prophetic.
The legend that died before poker went Hollywood. Such an amazing talent before statistics, analytics, solvers etc. The man won 33% of the tournaments he played. It's unheard of.
Upload full final table
The other guy who was happy with the win was the guy who staked Unger the WSOP entry fee. He got half a $million for his investment.
Yeah, he was happy. Stuey owed all that money, but he was happy because of the title, that's what mattered.
One of the greatest comebacks of all time! Seen this tournament so many times!!! such a sad story..
Why is a sad story?
@@aa1bb2cc3dd4 he died of an overdose not long after this..
@@Seb726Laviolette There's nothing sad about a crackhead dying when he dedicates his life to drugs instead of his kids.
@@Seb726Laviolette Very sad story, but most weren't surprised. Most expected him to pass away 10-15 years earlier from what I understand. Stuey was a very talented poker player, and the best gin rummy player ever.
Why they don’t play poker outside anymore? Even the WPT played the final table of bahamas outside next to the beach
If I remember correctly, there were renovations going on inside so they just moved out. It was meant to be temporary. Interesting to see, though.
Ungar also won 3 Super Bowl poker tournaments and 2 back to back
....right before the poker boom. We missed so much of Stu Unger and the genius he would have brought to the tv. So sad.
STU UNGER REAL OG
Wow, what a question by Gabe.
just a buddy trying to make him think and hope it hits home.
Stuey is the GOAT! 🐐 Poker and Gin Rummy GOAT! 🐐 🐐
Definitely gin rummy GOAT. One of the best tournament poker players ever as well.
Would have loved to see Stu after the poker boom.

I would have loved to see Stu play in the modern era of the early 2000s to 2010. Would be great. Sadly he passed away.
Pretty brutal beat for A8
Greatest ever
Stellar
My idol
Is this the same poker commentaryguy that we hear so often in modern time? In that case he been doing it for ages, legend status by now.
His name is Gabe Kaplan and he is the most beloved commentator in televised poker, yeah.
@@francescoiadicicco1266 thank you
Also was in Welcome Back, Kotter, the show that launched John Travolta's career.
Man he was definitely an amazing poker player to bad his demons got the better of him. He was looking pretty high in that interview
You really believe he was high in the interview? So if he was he was high on cocaine while he was playing?
@@gamegreed9105 100 percent he was high on cocaine while playing. Have you not seen his movie where the guy from Sopranos plays stu ungar. Check it out great movie and very close to the reality of his life
@@brentsenior7830 some lighter drugs like sugar caffeine and marijuana can actually be performance enhancing drugs for some poker players.
@@gamegreed9105 umm ok not sure what that has to do with stu whose drugs of choice included those but he used cocaine and lots of it.
@@brentsenior7830 I just mentioned the other lighter drugs and stimulants because I think Stu Ungar may have used cocaine as a performance enhancer whether he knew it or not while playing poker and I think many poker players use drugs or stimulants also to keep them alert and wide awake during long poker hours it's interesting do you think ungar was actually a better player under the influence of cocaine? Or do you think he could have played even better sober?
Him, chip,Doyle best 3 ever
What the other guy have?
Stu was/would be the best player in the world, I love Phil Ivey and I love Negreanu and all those geniuses but Ungar was something else when it come to cards and poker.🙏
Plenty of caring people, including Gabe around him, a wonderful, encouraging moment in life and he didn't give a thought about saving himself. "Nobody can beat me in cards", duh. 👎
a loser in his personal life
Who's next?
That Franco Harris!
Classic
Imagine an head's up battle between Ungar and Ivey..
I love both Stu and Phil. My two greatest heroes in poker. But I'd have to give a strong edge to Stuey
That would be a string bet today, did they have string bets back then?
No it wouldn't, he first announced raise.
If you first say "Raise," or the amount you want to raise or raise to, then that is perfectly fine.
The string bets lol
He wore this glasses to try hide his collapse nostril. Something about a savant level genius and having extreme auctions.
Ungar: "Nobody can beat me playing cards at my best"
Also Ungar: Gets it in with A4 vs A8
Poker is evolved.. he is great player of his time, dont compare with modern days. Modern game fish is winner at the old game.
Pretty standard heads up hand
It's heads up. Flopping a pair of aces with a straight draw is a big hand. He was never going to fold this hand on the flop. And he can shove to deny equity to a hand like 56
👍
Unger vs Ivey. Would have been epic. If only. 🙁
The kid
"the way"
Didn't the board paired the 3?? 2 pairs A3 with 8 kicker is winning right??
Ungar had a straight. A2345.
Oh yes so quick on the cam didn't realized the 5 was there
Stu is the greatest poker player of all time in my opinion.
Can you tell me how he would fare against modern greats? Lets say PA durrr ziggy ivey etc played against Stu
@matebreskovic5880 i personally think he would be considered the best if he was playing against the greats today. Stu was a math genius, his only downfall was drugs and his addiction to the track.
@@Lou-Meatskavitch he is considered to be the goat ; I love poker and watch all shows on pokergo ; yet I know nothing about Stu except that he won 3x main event and 1953-1998 born died lol
@@Lou-Meatskavitch if stu went in a time machine and played today he would def not be the best but if he has access to today's info and some time to learn he may well be the best
@@matebreskovic5880 none of those players are the best today either. The best players are those playing nosebleeds online, most of them are not famous yet. Linus Love getting kind of famous. The Jesse Livermore of poker
If we. Don't speakvi up about better air somewhere then no party. Association.
Ivey dwan. Bruce Lee and stu ungar are still alive.
I’ve always wondered what the love child of Steven Tyler and Michael Jackson would look like. Now I know.
"Look out next year" Well that didn't age well.
Weeeeeeeeeee
Pssssssst…..is going all-in with the worst hand considered an act of “genius” if the river throws you a life saver? Answer: only in the Tinkerbelle universe of celebrity poker.
Top pair plus inside straight draw vs top pair plus 8 kicker. All the money is going to the center regardless.
It's a little bit of a weird hand all around but that might be because it's so long ago. The opponent seems to make a rather oversized donk bet and Ungar makes an oversized shove over the top. It's not clear how much Ungar had behind but i agree that from a modern perspective that move looks bad. He folds his bluffs and only calls when he has you in bad shape.
Dude died a year later. Sad!
Left on top and the bottom
He died within a year of winning this. What a shame....
It was more than 500 days after this.
Oasis Jackson lol
He was dead not a year later
So he just got lucky on that hand right?
JFC, if that guy doesn't clean up quickly, he'll end up dead in some budget motel.
Don’t do drugs.
Stu Ungars cocaine nose was drawing dead when compared to Artie Langes.
Savage.
Stuey wins in horrible fashion what a Legend
Heads up with a pair of aces and a str8 draw. He can't fold.
He was great no doubt, but he got lucky the 2 fell.
Don't lie.
Lol poker Back then so laughable
Yeah, there were barely any Asians ruining the order of things. Was more of a gentleman's game than a mugs game!
Stu's hands look like a corpse's.
all that coke will do it😂
Get the feeling he could have been a world chess champion too if he wanted. He was clearly a savant.
Chess requires years of constant study and discipline. Not a chance Stu had the discipline for that
@@OneEyedJack01 so you didn't read the part "if he wanted"? There were two sentences. And you still selectively read. 🙄
So basically hes a luckbox. Meanwhile my opponent gets runner runner quads over my full house. Gtfo. 😂
Tournament is 80%luck
Production was so terrible in that era.
Ungar looks like a skeleton here. Why don't we see Kaplan doing commentary anymore? Not enough money in it?
What a waste, he was really something !
Hits an 8 outter and thinks he’s “the best”
