I still remember the bad feeling I got when I caused a player to lose Top 8 spot due to my judging mistake. No matter how many times I apologized, and no matter how much the player was cool about it, the guilt doesn’t go away.
I didnt even realize "if you make a ruling every single day" was a self-reference until you started playing your daily-ruling errors. Publishing daily is a wonderful exercise, but its a stellar idea ro reflect back and realize it might be for the best to be a bit less strict about it.
One of my proudest judging accomplishments is publishing DDR#365 on December 31st, so satisfying. But every time I go to a 3-4 day tournament and don't have to shoot 4-5 episodes the day before I leave while trying to pack, I reflect on the decision to take weekends off and I know it was the right call.
seeing episode 365 being uploaded on december 31 is so satisfying lol. i know you said it led to a few mistakes, but i really want to congratulate and thank you for meeting your goal of daily uploads for a whole year.
Update: By popular demand, I've edited the description to include links to the updated videos I posted after taking down the rulings with incorrect information in them.
@@ShapZack but the question was, what if an opponent plays urborg, tomb of yawgmoth, and then you play isolated chapel and control no other lands: does the chapel enter tapped or untapped?
As a semi recent subscriber, I really enjoy your daily ruling videos. However, I totally understand relaxing the production schedule. I would love to see maybe 2 deep dive videos a month? Something that exposes a more complex history, a shift in policy, or a change in the rules. Either way, I'm glad to have your content and hope to see your continued growth.
Dave great work. I love your videos. I'm working on becoming a judge myself, I'll have an interview with a L2 and then I'll take the L1 test. You're definitely an inspiration. Continue with the great work on 2022, and yeah. Don't worry about not uploading everyday. We'll keep watching. Happy new year. 🎉
Congratulations on a year of daily rulings! That's some serious commitment. Can't wait to see what you have in store for 2022, at a more reasonable pace of course! :D
Here's a good related question: if a judge tells you a rule or interaction works a certain way (and seems certain of their ruling), but you *know* that is not the case, what can/should you do? This came up once at a small Prerelease, and I argued with the judge. I feel like perhaps I shouldn't have, but when he checked other resources, I was proven right (at the cost of some game time).
Dave i love your videos! I will miss the old schedule tbh, but if you feel in rush by producing daily content i can totally understand you want to slow down! I do highly apreciate your work and effort. Happy new year and keep up the great work!
Thank you for a great year Dave. Definitely take weekends off and I would still be happy with just a few videos a week, whatever works best for you. I'll be watching your future rulings and can't wait to see how far your channel will go in the next year :)
I got pretty far behind in your videos lol. As the backlog grew bigger, I got more daunted at catching up. I've finally finished year 1. So a very belated congratulations to your year of daily uploads! In the 6 months since this video, you've doubled your subscriber count. So congratulations, again! +3k in a year into +4k in 6 months is incredible. One mil when?
This popped up on my recommended, and even though I don't watch this videos often, I have seen some before, it's okay to not force yourself to work everyday. It gives you time to do research and think things through. It also gives you time to record multiple videos in one day if they are similar topics, or you have done the research to feel confident on both
This is a great commentary on mistakes- one note I would make though, is that you mentioned planning to take down videos with mistakes. I think it is much more valuable to, instead of removing the video, choosing to append it and correct the video and explain what the mistake made was. This would give us a lot of insight into why some things can be easily mistaken so we can watch out for that!
Yay, congrats at making it this whole year. And don't worry about your upload schedule too much, you've done great and we've all probably learned alot, but I don't want to see a RUclipsr struggling from burnout. Have fun with your channel and good luck in 2022
I wonder, is a player allowed to use their phone to record a judge ruling? Like, use the microphone to record the ruling, letting the judge know and ask them to repeat the ruling in the process.
As far as I'm aware, the Magic Tournament Rules don't have anything that would prohibit you from doing so, but the venue, tournament organizer, or locality might have rules or laws that could affect this.
Monday, Wednesday, friday seems like a good schedule at face value but keep in mind that those r the days most channels post their content so maybe Tuesday, Thursday, n Saturday would be better to have people see ur content without it getting lost in the flood. Just a friendly suggestion. Glad to see u putting both the quality of the content n the quality of ur health first (rushing for deadlines can't be good for u). Happy new year
Could you do a video explaining how omnath locus of creation works with land drops on the stack? I have had it come up a couple of times and cannot wrap my head around it
I've written in a clarification in the description. The black and white portion comes from my original videos on the topics, and thus is INCORRECT. For the latter three of these, I've reuploaded corrected videos to the channel, but as the Urborg + Isolated Chapel wasn't caught until some time after the original video, I haven't got an updated ruling for that one. (The correct ruling is that Isolated Chapel will enter tapped unless you control a second land).
it's a daily ruling . we don't expect you to get everything right in that context ! like you said , you can only be so accurate . it is a cool experiment .
Freakin' awesome. You've hurt my brain sooo many times this year and I appreciate your effort. Don't worry. I can't absorb a brain crushing rule every single day of the year any more than you want to continue doing it. lol. Also, do you have corrections up on the ones you brought in as examples of errors? I was ready to take advantage of the Hexdrinker one and would like to know the actual ruling there. Many thanks!
I've got an updated video on the channel for all of these except the Urborg one, which wasn't caught as a mistake until much later. That one I just took down. The updated video for the Hexdrinker situation is here: ruclips.net/video/EoEFA6nBoh4/видео.html
I remember one of the weirdest experiences was a judge miscounting when we weren’t sure (well, I was sure, my opponent wasn’t, and I couldn’t remember my second card down) if I’d put back my second card for brainstorm. I was playing high tide with predict, so there were a LOT of cantrips. The call was long, and ended up with them ruling for my opponent, determining I had only put 1 card back. I can’t remember if I appealed or if the head judge was already involved. When I drew the card I HAD originally put back (it was a flusterstorm, my opponent was playing D&T so the card was 100% dead & it was an easy toss back. I did it immediately while thinking about the second), I sorta sheepishly walked up to him and was like “hey, uh, could you please do the count again? I’m 100% certain I ended up putting back 3 cards on my brainstorm.” Luckily he was very good about it and realized he’d miscounted somewhere, and I got my card back. To top it off, my opponent tried to slow play (we sorta knew because he’d played against my friend before and had done something similar + another person walked up to me and was like “holy shit dude that guy was slow playing hard”) and still lost lol
This topic reminds me of one time my friend missed a GPT top 8 (and shot at winning an expedition fetchland) because an incorrect judge ruling put my friend to losing in game 3, where he could have still won on the following turn. And once the head judge of the event heard the incorrect ruling, it was too late, my friend had picked up his deck.
The one time I called a judge, I was told that my opponent was correct and I couldn't use an instant to counter Emrakul, the Promised End because it has protection from instants. Two years later, after I'd stopped playing in-person Magic, I finally found out that wasn't the case.
Question about the first example provided; The player who received wrong information wouldn't net a game loss for an illegal card, but what would they have to replace the illegal card with?
I'm going to be honest, I only came here for what happens when the head judge makes a crucial mistake. Urzas saga and blood moon had a nightmare ruling and no one is talking about this
Hey Dave! Just wanted to say that after one year, I find it so impressive that you were able to keep to your production schedule! Here is a non magic question: were you shooting videos every day, or did you sometimes film and edit several at a time to be able to have a weekend away from the computer ?
Usually, I record, edit, and upload every day. As you guessed, if I had a weekend where I would be out of town judging, I had to record 1-2 extra episodes to be able to take that many days away from the channel. Recording 2-3 DDR's in one day, especially in addition to packing or doing other preparations for traveling was very stressful, and a big part of why I am not doing weekend uploads in 2022. If you're interested in more detail, I talked about this in some more detail in my 4k subs livestream (should be toward the beginning ruclips.net/video/sgHGq_mI4Ck/видео.html)
Hey Dave, just wanted to chime in to say I have learned a great lot because of your videos! Keep up the great work, and take care of yourself first! I do have a question, though: can you ninjutsu out Fallen shinobi sacrificing a wild cantor? The wild cantor is the only creature attacking that isn't blocked. Thanks a lot for your videos!
I think it would have to do with "you may pay costs in any order" - you would try to ninjitsu, and then beable to either pick up the Cantor, or sacrafice it, but doing one would stop you from doing the other afterwards.
isnt it better to put a disclaimer in the title to show that the solution in the video was not correct, like its still good to show it and maybe change the description for what the solution should be.
Do judges have access to an online system these days that lets you create the game state? For example I had a situation come up which was a bit of a weird situation but since I'd done it on arena, I knew it worked that way. The judge totally wasn't sure and agreed that if it works like that on arena then they were ok with me doing it. I couldn't force arena to have the same situation arise to show it working but I felt bad that nobody was sure except me (because frankly it was a crazy play but that's my style) and it would be useful for a tool like that to be available for judges in the moment so to speak.
This reminds me of one of the few standard tournaments I participated in. I totally punted by casting turn//burn on a hydra- realized my mistake (the hydra still has its +1/+1 counters), and pointed it out to my opponent. My opponent thought the hydra still lost its counters, and so I insisted we call a judge, trying to be honorable about my punt. And the judge ruled in my favor. I ended up winning that match, felt pretty bad about it- but what was I supposed to do?
How does Linvala keeper of silence effect Derevi, Empyrial Tactician and his activated abilities from the command zone and rather all commanders in the command zone
I have an interesting one for ya. Grizzly bear is reanimated with Animate Dead. Then some player casts Minimus Containment on that Animate Dead. What happens? If that treasure is used for mana, is the associated creature sacrificed? Only considering that because the main ability reads like one long triggered ability with that clause being a delayed trigger set up by it.
Animate Dead is a notoriously convoluted card due to enchanting cards in different zones, but the gist of how it works is as follows: 1. Animate Dead enters the battlefield enchanting a creature card in a graveyard. 2a. Animate Dead swaps "Enchant creature card in a graveyard" for "Enchant creature put onto the battlefield with Animate Dead". 2b. Animate Dead returns the creature. 2c. Animate Dead attaches itself to the creature. 2d. Animate Dead sets up a delayed trigger to sacrifice the creature if Animate Dead leaves the battlefield. 3. Animate Dead gives the enchanted creature -1/-0. Because the trigger is delayed (which can be seen on Gatherer in the fourth ruling from the top), Minimus Containment cannot prevent it from happening.
Maye someone knows: I would like to buy Ashling Flame dancer for Commander. Is discarding rquirement for the draw or do you draw even wirhout discarding. I found contrqdict explanations...
i'm glad i found your channel, and i hope you end up doing an "update video" to if you had done any mistakes (this is the first video of yours i've seen) and i'm going to checkout your stuff!!! i also wonder if this is a place to ask "What do you do if you have a [tournament] judge who intentionally makes up rules to handicap players they don't like?" For example; i was playing my Anje Falkenrath commander deck and i had Archfiend of Ifnir on the battlefield. Upon my opponent attacking me with three 2/2 zombies i made sure to announce "Tap Anje, Discard a card, Trigger, Archfiend of Ifnir sees me discarding a card each opponents creature gets a -1/-1 counter, card being discarded has Madness, Anje untaps, Graveyard Madness Card, Draw a card. [Then i did it the one more time]" and instead of creatures dying from getting -1/-1 counters, the player decided that instead his Noosegraf Mob would trigger gaining another zombie. And there is MORE to this story and basically the ONLY thing they honored that i did was when i decided to cast Boil. Yes, that "judge" is currently no longer the judge for my LGS.
My question is what happens to a player when a judge screws up. Let's say judge makes an incorrect ruling that ends up costing player to lose their undefeated record and results in them not going to day 2 or 3 of what were big event they're in. Is their some judge "oopsie" promo or something like that?
Relatively new to your channel and love the content. Could you do a video as to what you should do if you know you’re correct about a game action/board state but the judge makes an incorrect ruling? If you’ve already covered such scenario could someone supply a link?
Can you do a video on mechanics like investigate and populate? I recently ran into a issue with one of my decks in which I don't know how the interaction works. If I play confirm suspicions and investigate three times are those investigate triggers independent of one another or do all three happen at the and time?
This is really confusing. Doesn't Urborg modify itself? If Urborg is in play, It makes all lands swamps, and therefore would be a swamp itself no? so Chapel would come out untapped, because regardless of whether Chapel is a swamp, Uborg is a swamp and thus satisfies the requirements. What am I getting wrong there?
In a game with *hundreds of pages* of rules, in tourneys, it's totally understandable that a judge could make a mistake. Even if they are, *99%* accurate no one can be expected to know every rule and how every single card reacts with every other card.
I remember a mistake from a judge that caused a 15-20 minutes delay at a GP main sealed event. Round one i played a opponent that had 2x Gonti, Lord of Luxury and we played the same sleeves. At the end both my opponent and me didnt notice he still had one of my cards and round 2 started. A judge came and asked if i wanted to count my card there were only 39. The judge gave me a game loss and left. Then a few minutes later he came back and sad he wasnt allowed to give me a game loss because both my opponent and i didnt notice it someone else had and there was no reason to suspect any fault play. Now comes the issue he won the dice roll and i started game 2 cause i had a loss. A head judge came and reset the game but before this was done round 2 was already 20 minutes in. all and all it was nice how it was resolved but some people didnt like the huge delay caused.
Nah admitting ones mistakes doesn't burst any opinion I have of someone because in the end I can still trust them because I know even if wrong at first I'll get a fair answer in the end
If my opponent has cast a permanent from my deck, for example Sheoldred, the apoclypse via a Siphon Insight and i Hostage Taker the Sheoldred, when my opponent removes the Hostage Taker i believe the Sheoldred would be returned to it's owner, me, when it etbs. This was a call one of my friends got at an RCQ and the judge returned the Sheoldred to his opponent, when he was telling me this after i thought it was a bad call but i'm still not certain.
HEY!! This is the first video I e watched and the random jumpcuts to the seemingly random middle parts of different videos really make it hard to follow your point. It seemed like you forgot to splice in the 'you talking about it' parts. Its like listening to a 4 year old tell a story about a tv show or nancy pelosi answer questions about insider trading. and this is coming from someone who printed and reread the entire comprehesive, again, with midnight hunt. its all good, hopefully you read that with a funny accent and understand that im just trying to add humor to constructive criticism. I'll be surfing your back catalog, dont feel pressured into daily videos, ive heard from many creators about when they slowed down they filled up a board of ideas they wish they could make if they hadnt slowed down, and that's the goldmine. You can start premaking videos and planning vacations,
Sounds like you're contradicting the rulings on Daybound Night Bound, you have our whole community in an uproar on the rulings of Daybound Nightbound. We have no idea now how it operates. Such a terrible mechanic.
What happens when the same judge makes 3 mistakes in the same event all towards one player? Please respond. I kinda went off on him and I ended up with a year suspension for “violent behavior”.. I said naughty words, didn’t get violent at all…
This was also not the head judge. His 3 errors were, 1. Backing up game stage without head judge. 2. Game loss wrongfully given after a deck inspection over sleeves that were complete opaque. 3. And the one that set me off.. Announcing my entire sideboard in front of my opponent while deck checking in the TOP 4 GAME! This was an IQ when those were still a thing.
Admitting your own mistakes being the hardest ruling is lowkey some of the best advice I've ever actually heard.
This is his only 5 star ruling I'm pretty sure lol
I still remember the bad feeling I got when I caused a player to lose Top 8 spot due to my judging mistake. No matter how many times I apologized, and no matter how much the player was cool about it, the guilt doesn’t go away.
youre not sorry you got judge promos lol
One thing I really wish is for a "debug mode" in MTGO or Arena, where you can generate any game state instantly.
Closest thing is solitaire mode.
Sometimes MTGO gets it wrong too!

Animate Dead is a notoriously convoluted card due to enchanting cards in different zones, but the gist of how it works is as follows:
Wait what's the deal with Isolated Chapel and Urborg ? Isn't Urborg a Swamp due to it's own effect, what's the problem there ?
The scenario was if the urborg belonged to an opponent, whether chapel would come into play tapped or not (assuming it’s your first land)
@@wreonchkusi OK, that makes sense.
Hey i know this Judge!!! you've judged at Post Board alot and many other events in the midwest area!
Maye someone knows: I would like to buy Ashling Flame dancer for Commander. Is discarding rquirement for the draw or do you draw even wirhout discarding. I found contrqdict explanations...
i'm glad i found your channel, and i hope you end up doing an "update video" to if you had done any mistakes (this is the first video of yours i've seen) and i'm going to checkout your stuff!!! i also wonder if this is a place to ask "What do you do if you have a [tournament] judge who intentionally makes up rules to handicap players they don't like?"
For example; i was playing my Anje Falkenrath commander deck and i had Archfiend of Ifnir on the battlefield.
Is their some judge "oopsie" promo or something like that?
there’s diff levels of judges that judge would call in his or her superior
I'm guessing summary execution by draft chaff burial.
2 videos a week in enough c:
mid video haircut was the biggest judge mistake XD
How do I report a judge?
This is really confusing. Doesn't Urborg modify itself? If Urborg is in play, It makes all lands swamps, and therefore would be a swamp itself no? so Chapel would come out untapped, because regardless of whether Chapel is a swamp, Uborg is a swamp and thus satisfies the requirements. What am I getting wrong there?
The ruling has to do with an opponent’s urborg, not your own.
I like this channel
Whats frong about your regal in the back?
00:20 ain't that the truth?
See the description for links to the updated (and corrected) rulings.
Pretty sure I know you.
