Coming back to this in my early twenties after discovering this in my teens. This song played a role in me accepting myself as a ftm guy back then, it just represented the masculinity I had in such a gentle, healthy, and positive way. Now I'm finally on testosterone, and with all the body hair and beard coming in, this song is once again helping me to understand my body weight as desirable. I'm straight, but I've watched this a dozen times. What does that mean?
In gay circles a bear is a burly and cuddly fella and tends to be hairy, possibly bearded. They're different shapes and sizes so can be more muscley, overweight or just an average Joe shape. I would be considered a bear in the gay community. Some would see that as one of the stereotypes but I'm not offended by the term. Hope that helps.

Dale I used to worry about this and asked some Spanish bears (apparently there is a big bear scene in Spain) about this, complaining that fat did not turn my crank--it was muscles and fur. He responded by telling me that if I didn't like the name I should get another name. He had a point--but of course the point is that what you are after are called "muscle bears" to distinguish the rugby player type of bear from the fatter ones. But don't criticise the chubby bears. Body shaming has no place in the LGBT family--or anywhere for that matter.
