Excellent! - I could track down some information about the Russian composer Pyotr Petrovich Schenk (1870 - 1915), quote : The composer of Bluebeard was Pyotr Petrovich Schenk, one of the less-known Russian composers of the nineteenth century, whose name fell into obscurity after the 1917 Revolution. Schenk had graduated from the Saint Petersburg Conservatoire in 1887 as a pianist and took up music theory later. Born in 1870, he was orphaned at the age of six and was adopted by Imperial Theatre employee Pyotr Mikhailovich Schenk and his wife, the actress Ekaterina Reinecke, so a good part of his young adult life may have played in and out of the Imperial Theatre. There, he might have drawn attention to himself, possibly prior to his “brilliant début”. Following this success, he immediately appeared at the concert hall as conductor and pianist, performing his own works as well as others. If the Imperial management bargained for a ‘symphonist,’ they certainly had one in Schenk. According to unverified sources, Schenk started to compose Bluebeard in 1892, but should this prove to be unfounded, then the Imperial management surely eyed him as a potential candidate to, in time, follow in Tchaikovsky’s footsteps after many intended ballets by the lamented composer. In total, Schenk composed two ballets, five operas, four symphonies, symphonic poems, choruses, piano works, two operettas, cantatas and romances; for the romances, he closely collaborated with the Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich, a cousin of Tsar Nicholas II. He died in 1915, aged 45, a year after the première of his final opera.

There were not "many intended ballets" in the works prior to Tchaikovsky's death, and no one was attempting to find a composer to "follow in his footsteps", an idea conjured up by later historians. Although Petipa's 1896 ballet La Perle that was originally composed in 1892, Im not sure if the same can be said for Bluebeard, but I doubt it. The composer Pyotr Schenk worked in the music library of the Mariinsky Theatre, and was commissioned by the Imperial Theatre's director Ivan Vsevolozhsky. Bluebeard was mounted by Petipa for his benefit performance of 1896 that celebrated his 50th year of service to the Imperial Theatres. Regarding the kind of music Schenk provided, Petipa was a ballet master of the old school, and loved to choreograph to highly melodic 'musique dansante' - from the sound of the music heard in this video, Schenk certainly delivered such music in spades.

Oh, Looked it up. It was a ballet by Petipa. The composer of the original was Schenk.. don't know if this is
the original music or all him.. it might have music from other composers added, as do many of these
old ballets that have been reworked several times..

Absolutely delightful! I just stumbled on this by dumb luck and am now in love with Kretova (was already in love with Chudin!) Kretova has some unusual qualities including phenomenal musicality and, obviously, the ability to balance forever. I'll add her to the list of soloists for whose promotion I'm rooting (this includes RB Yuhui Choe and Mariinski's Olesya Novikova).

Yes, most Russian teaching is based on a variation of the Vaganova Method and is excellent -- the best, but these corps dancers are not necessarily from the Vaganova Academy, and the two featured dancers are principals of the Bolshoi Ballet.

Hi,Karen! You can read the answer to the name of the composer, dancers, etc., above. First
it gives brief info, but push where it says "show more", and scroll to the English script. Perhaps
you''ve already had your reply from the other nice viewers who itemized the names and pertinent information. (Peter Schenk is the composer. I am not familiar with his music).

Oh ! Many, many thanks for posting this beauty. I guess, the composer is the Austrian Johann Baptist Schenk (1753-1836) not Peter Schenk (1660-1711) who was a German engraver and cartographer. The dancers are beautiful, the performance, set design, costumes, everything is precious. I also loved the music. I have subscribed to your gorgeous channel.
