For some reason a lot of sad songs still sound sad in major key, there's even some sad songs that are originally in major key (everyone always mentions Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton but there's a lot more such as Coming Home...To Argentina by Megadeth, With or Without You by U2, Always With Me, Always With You by Joe Satriani and so on)

I hope this becomes another video.
So this is my personal cover song strategy. My preference is to never cover a song in the same key, time signature or style as the original. If it's in four, I'll try it in three. If it's major, then I will try it minor. If it's fast and heavy, then let's see how it sounds slow and brooding.
Also, as a man with a baritone voice, I love doing women's pop singles as open mic poetry slam or beat work. Sometimes it's surprising, about half the time it doesn't work, but often times it's just hilarious.
If you also try this strategy with boy band material you pretty much can't go wrong.

Picked up chords and like, 2 scales - well, more than that, just 2 scales that I KNOW. Everything else is kind of 'naturally' done.
