Coming from a Michigan fan here. Although OSU's QB play is light years ahead of what Michigan produced this year, I still thought the Buckeye faithful put a little bit too much faith in Will Howard. The truth is I didn't know who he was until this year. Joel Klatt did a great analysis (less technical) of this game. In short he said that the coaching staff lost some confidence in Howard and that Michigan was playing primarily pass based defensive schemes so OSU ran the ball based on that. The problem (for OSU) was that the Michigan defensive line played so well that even while in the wrong schemes they could still stop the run. See you all next year, cheers.
As a Michigan fan this was a very enjoyable watch. The analysis and breakdowns here are among the best I have seen this week. The commentary at the end was spot on as well. Very nice work. I love technical football vs drooling fan BS.
15:08, no the ball should never be thrown there. The corner has outside leverage by alignment alone. Bad pass or not, that ball should never be thrown to that read.
Oregon ran behind left tackle Josh Conerly Jr all night against Ohio State. They never made an adjustment. Coaching, not players, is the issue for the Buckeyes.
Thank you! This is an awesome, great video explaining exactly what I've been trying to tell people. Will Howard had the worst game as a Buckeye in this game for sure. The o-line has gotten SO BAD, especially after losing Simmons and then worse after Mclaughlin got hurt. Justin Frye is NOT the answer for the offensive line. Idk what he's doing or how he got this job(other than being a friend of Day and Kelly) at Ohio State. Justin Frye has to go NOW, he should've been gone last year. Actually, he never should've come here, he's not good enough.
As soon as I heard the oline was beat up and after I watched Will Howard against Indiana I placed a bet on Michigan and also the Under. Oline OLine Oline. That’s what wins every time. Unless you have a crazy good qb, which Ohio doesn’t.
Thanks for this very good analysis. Media & fans always grab for the simplest possible narrative ("why did they run right into Michigan's defensive strength??"), but there were really several factors in this game, and it took all of them together to get this result. Howard had very bad day, which is probably a "one-off" ... But the patchwork O-line, as you said, clearly needs a lot more reps -- which makes it even more unfortunate to have lost the CCG berth.
When Ryan Day decided to make the disastrous hire of Kerry Coombs as Defensive Coordinator back in 2020, it was clear Day was clueless. And to think OSU paid Day $10 million a year to learn how to be a head coach is insane. Urban Meyer recommended Day for the job, so Mayer should NOT be considered as Day's replacement.
Adrenaline can make one go ‘blind’ especially when under too much pressure… it has happened to many greats.. been a long 5 weeks for this team n they did stink (coaching) on Saturday . Beating on a person who is already broken can be counterproductive in a negative way! Buckeyes focus on the playoffs or this team will lose again miserably! Be SUPPORTIVE even as you demand accountability! Go bucks! If you lose coach Day! You will lose more than The Game next year! With NIL all these players will hit the portal in a heartbeat if Day leaves! I would focus on what’s at stake.. look at Georgia, Penn State , Alabama , Texas n even Indiana.. the are Focused on the next task.. what’s done is done!
Been a staunch supporter of Day till this point. Saturday was indefensible. One of the worst Michigan teams ever… 3 Star walk on at quarterback. No Star tight end and defensive back. Donovan plays only one half. 20 pt. Favorites with a stacked roster at home… if they get hosed in the playoffs Ryan should be gone. Only a National championship saves his job!!
16:01 The issue here is that Ohio State went max protect, but Michigan brought only 4 on the pass rush. That's 3 receivers going out against 7 in coverage. Not good. Michigan baited Howard into making that throw, almost counting on him to make mistakes. Instead of throwing to Egbuka, Howard could have thrown it to Tate in the back of the endzone or thrown it to JJ on the right towards the outside and try to make it more of a 1-on-1 matchup, maybe even get a pass interference call. Not a good game for Howard from a decision standpoint.
14:06 Imagine a tight end crossing from right to left across the middle of the field. If nothing else it would occupy at least one defender, allowing for more 1-on-1 matchups for the other receivers, and possibly more yards after the catch.
Congrats on the W, well deserved, yet again..lol also glad that those 2 monsters in the middle will be gone next year. Yes, your team did exactly what they needed to do for the W. To say we shouldn't be in the playoff's is well, just dumb. Yeah are oline is shaky at best, sure, and are only other loss is to the #1 ranked team at there place that went down to the wire and also beat Penn State at there place. You just sound mad because we still have a chance and you will be in the tractor supply bowl.
@@stixxinator Still the current National Champs, so not too worried about the tractor supply bowl in a down year. Also, your O-line sucks now because of injuries and isn't going to get back to what it was against Oregon. Lastly, you should know better than to brag about beating Penn State - they find ways to lose against M and OSU pretty much every year.
@@awouldyeah well it wasn't supposed to be a down year according to most of your base. I can't tell you how many would reply back to back and we develop we don't need 5 stars our line will be fine some even said they thought they would be better than last year and alot also said that Moore was the man no worries, Orgi will be fine, we will beat Texas they come here and haven't seen a run game with our video game cover guy and on and on. 5 or 6 games in, we will be stuck with Moore, fire the whole staff, Orgi can't throw the forward pass, Edwards isn't even the best back on the team, the oline was getting mauled, like ours lol, so yeah if you tell me you even thought it was gonna be a down year your lying...glad to see after moores win vs us that he has restored your fans confidence that he is good going forward.
6.53. LOS is on our side of the ball. Our big guys look like they are in some kind of half-assed pass blocking scheme. A line backer stands up our left guard. Hips are high, feet are together, ready to surrender leverage. Yep, it is just because we have guys out of position, are not used to being starters, etc.
After reviewing the all 22 several times ,With all due respect I have a different take on many of your assertions. This is just one man's opinion for what it's worth. On the first stretch play The backside guard is not responsible for the frontside linebacker. I have no idea why he chased him. His combination is to the backside lber. He does not have to leave the defensive tackle that quick! He made the backside tackles job virtually impossible. The defensive end is being read so the backside tackle is not responsible for him. •the next play I do not believe is a midline option. The guard actually comes back and blocks Graham late. The problem is the right tackle gets his right hand involved in block and in turn gets his shoulders turned and can't get the front side lber who runs through. FYI. The d line is not allowed to grab the o line to keep them off the lber. Although seldom called, it is a foul •The next play is not a power. A power play is a gap scheme . This is a G pull wrap at the low side. The play side tackle and tight end base the 5 tech and the stand up player. The right tackle obviously lost his block • The bluff OT counter was designed to conflict the open side standup with the running back and allow for an easier trap for the backside guard. A well run play. • on the play pass deep over its notable that Michigan left the box light 44 times on 1st and 2nd down. This was one of the few when they spun a safety down and rolled into a 1 high look. I don't believe this route combination was something that was vulnerable the whole game. Their base coverages probably would not have allowed the deep over throw and forced more throws to the post with so many split safety looks. (Cover 4,6,2) • the interception is simple . He threw that ball with a 3 step plant throw. That's the timing on a speed out from shotgun. I don't believe he could throw it any quicker than he did. The problem with throwing a speed out from the middle of the field to your right is the quarterback tends to telegraph the throw to secure he has a clear throwing lane. (He stares the throw down)In this instance the corner was laying outside and had clear vision into the quarterback. He stole his aerial and jumped the cut. Either that,or he felt the receiver prematurely leaning into the cut. The qb must come off this throw when he sees this scenario. This is why this throw is dangerous. The mirrored speed out to the left had softer coverage and the quarterback will not tip his intentions, but this had to be read on the pre snap. • I believe the option route for an interception was simply a bad throw but not necessarily a bad decision • in 5 man protection the o line will squeeze the A gap only if it is immediately threaten. OTHERWISE, they must set to their target. The linebacker from depth is the responsibility of the quaterback in scat protection. The qb buys time with his footwork and The ball should have come out hot to either the flat or the shallow crosser. Occasionally, the tackle will see his target drop into coverage and comeback help on the blitzer but the qb can't count on this. I have no idea why this ball was thrown to the corner . • totally agree on the smash -route distribution was poor(corner could play both routes)he was too slow to start his feet and respond to his alternative receivers.
Michigan Fan: Mentioned over and over is this idea that because of the injuries the line wasn't functioning well due the newness of the position changes. However, I would attribute this to coaching inadequacies. In 2023, Michigan's best lineman went down in this game with a horrible injury. Michigan also moved a tackle in to guard and brought in the back-up tackle. They went on to win that game and 3 more despite not playing together for very long. Maybe the back-up isn't quite as strong or physically gifted, or mature, but they should still be hitting their assignments right as upperclassmen.
They also almost lost to OSU as OSU was driving with 45 seconds left and Donny Jackson trips on another players feet on the last play. Michigan also had a miracle finish against Bama. Not like they steamrolled teams. Oline in shambles definitely hurt OSU and likely will going forward.
4.33. Jesus Christ. Hey, lets have the whole O line just turn right and run for the sideline. The Buckeye's have sucked at these zone stretch blocking schemes for years, and it does not matter who is in there. These stand-up, surrender leverage, allow penetration schemes develop bad habits that bleed over into non-zone schemes, where are guys habitually get stood up and caught on their heels, allowing the defender under their pads and onto our side of the ball way to often. This is why our big guys on the O line appear soft. They are not soft, but there are poorly coached. If you get dominated at the LOS, then the outcome is on a knife's edge when it comes to mistakes, penalties, interceptions, fumbles, etc. The team that dominates on the LOS can absorb these mistakes and continue to roll. Basic football, it is not rocket science. Hinzman, at left guard, appears to be the only one strong enough to be able to block with his pad level consistently above the level of the defenders, and our shorter more compact Alabama transfer center is the only one that consistently does not allow defenders to get under his pads. Stop trying to force our guys into blocking schemes they just can't handle that also develop bad habits, and how about having them develop that habit of staying low and driving the SOBs down the field regardless of the blocking scheme. Even if they wiff from time to time, anything has got to be better than this.
Seth McLaughlin would not have helped. Remember earlier this year when he was with Bama and got smacked around by the same guys? Caleb Downs now has the distinction (great player that he is) of losing to M TWICE in one year!
Should have went after Bowling Green's tight end Fannin but they go after Ohio U's guy. Would have a over middle threat. Why get at blocking tight end when the line can't block.
When you excuse recruiting misses year over year on the OL and fill classes with 3 star stretches, and then when you don't aggressively search for tackles in the portal, this is what happens.
I think Ohio state should’ve went all in to get Cam Ward in the offseason. If Ohio state loses to Tennessee.. fire Day on the field and go get Marcus freeman, Eddie George, or Verbal.
Will Howard was probably concussed from that hit and played like it the rest of the game. OSU was afraid to call QB runs and he didn't want to tuck and run either. Can't really recall a situation recently where a player could not get up from a blow to the head and was allowed back in so fast. Plus Chip Kelly does blow LOL
3.43. Did you happen to notice that the D line steps with our O line in sync with the play. It is like they knew exactly what we were running. How they hell does that happen?
@@pinkford2 I think it is apparent that Stallions was just reinforcement for what they already too easily prepared for from the get go. I am a rabid, take it personal, Ohio football born and raised, unapologetic fan. Losing to a good team in a balls to the wall effort there is no shame, but I am finished with hoping for better with this coaching staff. Could care less when it comes to all the diva NFL talent we put into the league.
First two plays diagrammed were laughable. The first is how it was stuffed because OSU line missed a block, but the RB was tackled by 3 or 4 Michigan players, just swarmed. This wasn't a result of one guy missing his block. Second was the same thing, they kept stretching it and couldn't handle the speed of Michigan's D and the RB was again gang tackled. The copium is making for some really flimsy excuses.
inept coaching is your problem in Columbus. but now, going forward... talent is neutralized and with superior coaching in AA. this is the beginning of Michigan 10 game winning streak... 6 more to go. (pride comes before the fall)
This study was awful to watch because of the result of the game. Hard facts given to fans like me. I appreciate it. I give you a thumbs up for that. To Ryan Day: PASS. The. Damn. Ball.
Ryan Day needs to go to High School and coach. Horrible play calls plus a Terrible kicker. This game was embarrassing for Ohio. At least Day should call plays like he wants to win the game.
Why are the Buckeye's missing Seth Mclaughlin so much? Could it be that he was properly trained on how to block at Alabama, and Thank God that Day and the rest of his clown show hasn't had enough time to screw him up too. And what do you know...he was only a 3 star player out of high school. Our big guys should be 300 pounds of rolled coiled steel, exploding into opponents at every opportunity. Why do our coaches seem to want to neuter the fearsome potential kinetic energy in 300 plus pounds of uncoiled accelerating force, just to teach our guys to stand-up in-place and engage in a pathetic 3 second wrestling match with defenders? Defensive coordinators and players have to be laughing and salivating while they watch the replay. Michigan used our guys 6 foot plus frames as shields to block running lanes just long enough to prevent our RBs from making any reads, then shove them aside to make the tackle. Soft is one way to describe it, I call it being sabotaged from the onset by your own coaching staff. Also, why so many injuries on the O line, especially lower leg injuries? This has become expected with OSU. Could it be conditioning, or could it be like I was taught by my coaches many years ago where they warned how cautious, unaggressive effort will get you hurt, especially when schemes and techniques encourage it? Could it be that standing-up to block at the LOS leave you vulnerable to 200 pound RBs running up your butt and people colliding around your legs on the way to the ground? It is sadly apparent that our coaches talk toughness, but undermine it on the O line in just about every way possible.
Look at that poor O-line play, terrible. That's what you get when you hire your best friend as o-line coach instead of a reslly good coach. Howard is not a pure passer either.
Its very simple film breakdown. I can help everyone save 25 minutes of life. Michigan walked into the shoe again and took everybodys lunch money! Took a big crap in that giant the toilet bowl right on the O just to show the worst damn band in the land (actually i tend to like the osu band and it's traditions but i digress) who craps on whos flag! Give this guy a subscribe and a like though, so he can keep making a living and donating to the Ryan Day contract extension fund!
Your coach is soft, players are soft, fanbase is soft, and even your state legislators are soft. Day really turned the entire state of Ohio into a bunch of snowflakes lmaoo
Idiot coaches didn't let the boy throw the ball. How many damn times you gotta try and punch it up the middle before you figure out that you gotta THROW THE BALL?
First play, I know how this entire video is going to go. Michigan players aren't very good, it's just that OSU didn't execute. If your OL can't physically reach block the DTs, it's not because of a "miscommunication."
So the O-line can't run block. Time to get funky with the pass calls. There's no excuse for an O line at OSU being so weak, nor is there an excuse for a coaching staff that won't hide the weaknesses and play to the team strengths. Time for Frye to go. I don't care if he's Ryan's boyfriend.
This is what happens when your HC is pathologically insecure...and your fans are just plain pathological in every way. And here, the excuses just keep flowing.
The OSU defense allowed a completely talentless Michigan Offense to control & run clock out in 4th quarter - completely unacceptable and contributed to the loss

Can't really recall a situation recently where a player could not get up from a blow to the head and was allowed back in so fast. Plus Chip Kelly does blow LOL
This is so delicious. 4-0 with toughness and heart clearly lacking on the $20m team. 〽️ Hail!
3.43. Did you happen to notice that the D line steps with our O line in sync with the play. It is like they knew exactly what we were running. How they hell does that happen?
They don't make one step unless Connor Stallions tells them too.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Connor Stallions is using Elon Musk's neurolink to control their legs.
My God you people are so dumb smh.
Really interesting insights into what happened. Thank you.👍
Michigan D line Dominated Ohio O line. Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant is your Daddy.
some of the worst OL coaching I have seen in my life. this is inexcusable coming from a roster full of 4 and 5 stars.
Go Blue!
inept coaching is your problem in Columbus. but now, going forward... talent is neutralized and with superior coaching in AA. this is the beginning of Michigan 10 game winning streak... 6 more to go. (pride comes before the fall)
Why are you calling plays your players can’t execute?
The end.
This study was awful to watch because of the result of the game. Hard facts given to fans like me. I appreciate it. I give you a thumbs up for that. To Ryan Day: PASS. The. Damn. Ball.
"The scheme is there, the execution is not." - if you can't execute the scheme, repeatedly, time to change up the scheme. Kelly refused. Bad coaching.
Amen
If they dont recruit oline they better get a stud dual threat qb back on the field.
Keep telling yourself that!😆😏😆
One of these teams has better coaching. Lol
Outside of WR and QB (which didn’t matter this game) what position is Ohio St better than Michigan? 🤔
And here, the excuses just keep flowing.
easy answer the weak coach
The OSU defense allowed a completely talentless Michigan Offense to control & run clock out in 4th quarter - completely unacceptable and contributed to the loss
Michigan hasn't punted in the 4th quarter since the 2019 game.
You only thought they were talentless
You guys need to stop that piss-ant stuff about "That Team Up North", crossing the M out in words etc. It is sophomoric.
Losers gonna lose. Need a new coach.
Ryan should be fired you cannot learn on the job at Ohio state
Michigan Dline >>>> ohio Oline. that was the difference.
OSU lost. End of the story
