  • My favorite watercolor papers are a handful of awesome brands I use regularly and have come to love. My very first video in 2014 was on watercolor paper, so I thought it might be fun, on my 8-year channel anniversary, to do a brief reaction to that video and recap the papers I love to use today.

    I love Saunders Waterford also and I learned by sheer coincidence when ordering Fabriano Artistico 5 sheet packs from Blick’s that some of them had Kilimanjaro watermarks. I wrote on Cheap Joe’s reviews some 3 years ago about that and that if Fabriano Artistico wasn’t the maker of Kilimanjaro that they correct me. I had the photos and the paper was the same. That is when I was doing a ton of hardbound wc sketchbooks. They admitted it and I mentioned about being upfront with correct pricing then and wrote it under reviews for both papers. So now it has been out there and now everybody can know. I enjoy the new Hahnemule wc sketchbooks. They do very well with layering and all those important things. But Arches is still a favorite but for hp (charcoal and other drawings) I gravitate towards Saunders Waterford. It has a superb thickness. Wow 8 yrs, amazing!

    • @morrisonwatercolors
      @morrisonwatercolors 2 года назад +1

      Yes, I also have ordered the same 5 packs from Blick, advertised as Artistico but getting Kilimanjaro instead. So does that mean that Fabriano makes the Kilimanjaro paper too? Or why would the paper have the Kilimanjaro watermark inside Artistico packaging? Not sure, but I have come to love the 5 packs and now Kilimanjaro is probably one of my favorite papers! :)

      Not exactly, they are each their own company but were bought off by the F.I.L.A company and are now 'daughter companies'. This company is an italian art supplies company with little success, but after a take over from a certain italian family they've started to buy dozens of art companies all over the world, first school art supplies and later even pro art supplies companies. Here are a few (formerly family business or independent) companies that now belong to them:
      - Lyra, Prang, Strathmore, Vinci, Maimeri, Lukas, Daler Rowney, Princeton Artist Brushes Co. and of course: Canson and Arches.
      And while the companies are left to operate pretty independently, each and every single one of them went through some changes first thing. For some, like Arches and Lukas (once the only real threat to Schmincke in Germany, as their paints were nearly as high quality but cheaper - not anymore), that lowered the quality somewhat to increase income - Arches papers DO spoil easier and faster since the take over. For others, like Lyra (german pencil supplier for school and student art grade pencils) and Maimeri (italies best paint supplies company, with the purest watercolors there are worldwide) those changes improved the quality of the products.

    • @gclepine

      @@olgahein4384 Thanks for this information. Unfortunately companies that are family owned eventually always get taken over by bigger companies. I am still not convinced that bigger is better!

    Someone gifted me some Bockingford and I find it lovely to work on, however because it’s not 100% cotton, it doesn’t stay wet for as long, especially here in Western Australia where it can very hot and dry, so I’d suggest not using it for a project that includes a lot of wet on wet. My friend does a lot of highly detailed botanical paintings and it seems to work well for those. Sadly I’ve never used Arches as it isn’t vegan friendly but I do use Fabriano Artistico which I love. A note for very strict vegans who may read this, Bockingford doesn’t contain gelatine in the sizing but is processed using wool rollers which technically makes it non vegan. I’m using it because it was a gift and for selected projects only, but Fabriano Artistico is my go to. I’ve been painting for less than a year but worked out very quickly the importance of paper. I’ve watched other students in my class be very disappointed in their results because of poor paper choice and not stretching the paper or not stretching it properly. I’d rather compromise on the size of my painting than the quality of my paper. Loving your videos and currently binge watching them 😂❤

    Hahahaha I loved that "crap paper for beginners" part. "Only the worst will do". My thing is I have accumulated so much from before I knew better that I want to use the crap and get rid of it. I try to use it for pen testing and swatching as I mix (not the swatching that goes into my swatch catalogue). I moved some of the crappy paper sketchbooks to my home office to use as scratch paper for when I'm on phone meetings. Another issue I have, and I think Lindsey the Frugal Painter has said this too, is that I like to "save" my best supplies for something special. I get significant anxiety when I feel I wasted a good supply. I am trying very hard to get out of that mindset of saving the best for last. I am over 50 now, I can afford the good stuff, and I deserve it. I need to find someone's kid that I can give the lower quality stuff to.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  2 года назад

      I respect Lindsay a lot. She's a friend and an amazing RUclipsr and artist, but in the "save it for the best" philosophy for watercolor paper, we completely disagree. Because the two types of paper react so differently, you have to change approaches when painting. I think pulp papers are fine for line and wash and for gouache. Terrible for any sort of layering and forget about heavy lifting or scrubbing. The least forgiving of all watercolor surfaces.

    One thing to remember about Strathmore papers: "500" is the series designation for their best grade of paper but there are all kinds of "500" series papers - drawing paper, Bristol board, etc. For watercolor make sure you get watercolor paper, not one of their other papers. That said, their "500" series drawing paper is excellent, one of my favorites for drawing.

    Listen as soon as I heard that comment, I knew I had to have the cotton Paper, and at the time you could purchase a 9×12 pad of arches 140lb for 15.00. And although I was shocked that I would be paying more than 1$ page for a 9×12, I nearly fell over. But during the pandemic I found myself intrigued with my child's watercolor set, and I never looked back. Now that I have a better job, I have all the beautiful supplies, and some skill to go with them. that was a few years ago now, and I definitely love ❤ the mind of watercolor. I've really enjoyed your videos so far and I'm most impressed at how long you've been doing these tutorials. Thank you so much for it and congratulations on your eighth anniversary! I was one of those that, in spite of being told to use 100% cotton paper, started with cellulose paper because in my country cotton paper is outrageously expensive. I'm quite the stubborn one, so it didn't hold me back from continuing to practise. I knew paper would be an issue and I took up the challenge. About a year and a half later, I tried cotton paper for the first time, and I haven't been able to willingly go back to cellulose paper again XD . Luckily, I can afford it now, and I know I won't regret it.

Not just about applying wash to paper, but all the really useful tips about the kit required to actually enjoy the medium and make some progress. A big thanks for all your work, you certainly saved me a lot of heart ache and disappointment. One further paper suggestion for you from St Cuthbert's Mill, Milford. 100% cotton, but hard sized; the wash floats about a little more and it remains damp a little longer. Interesting paper and I use it a lot. Not sure if it's available your side of the pond, it's difficult enough to find in Europe, readily available in the UK though and worth a try if you can access it.

    Recently I heard about KHADI 100% cotton watercolor paper from Jane Betteridge. It is Handmade paper from India. I am loving it!

    I'm a fairly new subscriber and have been watching your past and new videos. I used to love oil painting landscapes when I was younger. I also did some watercolor. That's been awhile ago. I just got some paint brushes and paper and will be getting out my watercolors. I love your videos.

    I totally agree about 100% cotton paper. I've wasted a lot of time and energy trying to practice on non-cotton paper. For me, it was discouraging. It was an eye-opener when I started using 100% cotton not only for my final paintings but even for practice.

    If you’re a diy kinda artist, you can make your own “block” out of a pad by gently applying hot glue (not the heavy duty but the light duty cool gun preferred) along the edges of the paper and smoothing it out, leaving a 1-2” opening. Works great!

    This just came up in my RUclips feed. I subscribed and will be going back through your channel to try and learn something (I’m not a watercolor artist, but I love just messing around with watercolors in my mixed media art).

    Steve, you are the reason I actually tried the Arches paper my mom gave me when I first started painting, and the reason I use only cotton paper now. You’re also the reason I tried loose landscapes, and found that I love doing them.

    I've heard others say the Hahnemühle ranked pretty closely to Arches too. Good to hear that from you too. And the Canson Heritage is a bit of a nemesis with me. Maybe my pad is a dud but I can't lift the masking after I paint. Rather irritating and wondered if you ever had that problem. Really appreciate the details on the papers you use, Steve. Very helpful! 🥰

      Not sure about mask on Canson. I may not have tried it. I don't use mask terribly often.

    I love your channel Steve. You’ve taught me so much, and I can’t thank you enough! I think your older videos have held up exceptionally well. I’ve watched almost all of them at this point. Your sense of humor has always been a highlight of your videos for me, and I loved how in your earlier videos you would showcase it so often. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know your work is very much appreciated. I also wanted to point out that I have always loved that you throw a Bible verse in at the end. A lot of people these days would be reluctant to do that, and I admire the fact that you still do it.

    I've enjoyed your channel for almost 3 years now! Thank you so much for continuing to publish videos with meaningful content. I know it's a lot of work to make even a short video, so please know that your work is appreciated. My favorite everyday watercolor paper is Indigo Artpapers cold press. I love the texture, the weight and feel, and the way it holds up to lots of water, scrubbing, lifting, glazing, and pen work. Their books are especially nice, with deckled edges and a way to remove each sheet along the bound edge by wetting and tearing so that edge is also deckled. There is also a sheet protector between every set of pages.

    You can still get Moulin du Roy, in the UK anyway. Nice paper. I had trouble with tape lifting the surface so badly on Stonehenge that I have't gone back to it. My block is languishing...probably the sizing will have gone off by the time I decide to give it another go!

      A painters tape for sensitive surfaces seems to work ok. You still need to peel it slowly or use a heat tool/hair dryer to soften the gum before removing it.

      @@mindofwatercolor Thanks Steve! I'm using washi tape now most places, it seems to have a better record at easy removal than anything else I've tried
