Presenting an animation I created for my college games design course! Made as an introductory trailer for Gef, a mongoose I chose as a character in my hypothetical cryptid/urban legend fighting game!
After hearing this song, I became fascinated with the tale of Gef the Talking Mongoose, so getting to base part of a project on him was a nice surprise/coincidence and very fun!
Excluding the sketch and concepts, this animation is around 42 hours of work, and consists of around 400 frames! I believe.. it's my biggest project so far!
I tried a lot of new things, failed a good amount, and learned a lot! In the end, I'm really happy with how it turned out! Plus I've been wanting to animate one of Neil's songs for a good while, so I had a blast!

The minimalist color pallet and stylization really lend to this animation well. The storytelling was very well done for the small amount of time, and the abstract shots really make the piece feel more mysterious. This is a great animation!
I love Gef’s story, it’s such a intriguing thing
People have seen the daughter making sounds, or speaking in a different pitch of voice into the gap between the stone outer wall and wood inner wall of the house, and claim that when they hear Gef talking from behind hedges on their way to the market, it’s really just the daughter’s ventriloquism. However, it’s said that Gef would hunt mice, and put out the fire if anyone forgot. One man stayed there, and said Gef talked to him while the daughter was outside and everyone else was eating at the table. Apparently, he also heard Gef walking around
I love this because for some reason I always imagined a mongoose with human hands and feet just plastered on........this was refreshing seeing paws.
The best animated version of this song, has character, very fluid for the low frame rate and follows the story very well!

A cryptid/urban legend based fighting game would be really cool. Gef being part of that would be just as cool, considering he almost never gets mentioned anymore outside of this song and like, random, out of pocket conversation. Neat stuff.

Conspiracies for Gef:
In India they believe in reincarnation (I believe) so it may be possible that since Gef came from India, he was a human in his past, which makes sense to why he’d be able to speak and understand human language.
It could also be possible Gef was some sort of spirit or demon, as it says in the song, maybe he was never alive in the first place as he was “living in the wall” so I’m not sure if they never actually saw him besides their daughter who was rumored to have seen Gef, so they don’t even know if he was a mongoose in the first place.
I think we should all agree that Gef is our collective god

Fun fact: Lemon Demon made the lyrics quotes of Gef the mongoose, for example Gef once said that if you saw him you would either get paralyzed, turned into a pillar of salt, or you would become mummified. Almost all of these lyrics are quotes from Gef
Eighth wonder is one of my favorite spirit phone songs and this animation has such a wonderful energy to it.
This is my favorite version, it's just Gef being narcissistic and it's amazing.

This is so darn cool! I love the colors and how well you portrayed Gef's story, not to mention the animation is GODLY smooth and the expressions are awesome! This is also one of my favorite Lemon Demon songs- it's so nice to see it so-well animated like this!

He was a cryptid from the Isle of Man, a mongoose who could speak, and was with a family on their farm, and like most cryptids, there’s no completely sure answer to what was really happening.
