Best police chase ever filmed! Toby grew up near me at a junkyard and did his own stunts including the big jump at the end. I was an extra in part 2 driving a police chase car about 2 weeks before Toby was killed. It was never completed. He was a common type, wore a dirty t-shirt during filming and would have a beer with anyone. Nice guy, sadly missed. Thanks for posting this classic!!

People always talk about the Cage Gone in 60 Seconds, but this is the REAL deal. It's so hard to believe the original Eleanor still runs to this day, even after all the abuse it took in that very long chase.

Like many I thought the Cage film was a one off until I saw this by mistaking it for the Cage film on TV one night. This instantly became my favourite car film and the story behind its production is just amazing. Such a shame H.B. Halicki died before his time but this film ensures he will never be forgotten in car circles because that chase is the best in film history in my opinion.

It's a three way battle between this, Bullitt and Vanishing Point as the best car movies of all time. The fact this this was effectivley an amateur movie with almost no script, Toby Halicki did all his own stunts, financed, wrote, directed.....its an extraordinary achievement. And kids, it's all real. No CGI, no special effects.

I absolutely love the original and the remake but I love the original for its creativity you can’t remake a movie scene like this nowadays with using a classic car because what’s the odds of you finding another classic car the exact one you need back then you could run into these cars almost every other block so it was really easy for him to swap Mustang’s

    • @culcune

That was the beauty of any of the old movies. I recall in the 80s when mild 60s/70s muscle cars could be had for about $1500. The more sought out big-block cars were in the $3-4K range (i.e. '69 Charger with the 440). Now, these prices were in the L.A. area, so there were probably $1500 deals on the big-block cars elsewhere. The unique thing about '68, '69 and '70 Chargers in the L.A. area were how they were essentially all scooped up to be used in 'Dukes of Hazard' which helped drive up prices on the Chargers. Hemis were already collector cars, and were fetching $10K or higher, but that was if they were found. I think the last era where they could have made equivalent low-grade car chase movies would have been in the 90s, maybe into the early 2000s when the 80s and 90s Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds, as well as sedans from Ford and Chevy (used as cop cars) could still be had relatively cheaply and were probably as easy to work on as the 60s and 70s cars used in the old movies featuring car chases like 'Gone in...'

well for movies like this, at least in our time now, they use replica cars.. for example the Need for Speed movie in 2014 had hypercar crashes, all replicas but still amazing onboards oh and they also have 60-70's muscle cars in the first race.
