      @@NemoPropaganda anyway I agree with you man, if my space wasn't an issue...I would go for Pontus, but with Ares Im more than satisfied, even listen to the terminator, I'm still happy with Ares. Is really huge difference in size. I can't fit them. I don't even have the urge or temptation to change DACs. That's how well the size and performance the Ares is giving. Great built great sound and most importantly great synergy to my system.

    I upgraded after one year and a half going form the Ares II to the Pontus II. Review after review swooned over and over about the Ares II and it's performance/price point ratio. Asked all the time if the Pontus II is worth twice the price as the Ares II. My purely subjective answer is this; if the Ares II costs a theoretical $100 and gets a performance rating of 100, then the Pontus II would cost a theoretical $200 and gets a performance rating of 133-150. Is it worth it--ABSOLUTELY! NO QUESTION ABOUT IT.

    I bought my Pontus ii for my computer desktop system more than a week ago. Amazing DAC. It does require a fair amount of burn in. I play focus music - classical, chill, jazz usually at low volumes. The holographic imaging and lack of grain makes music listening very enjoyable. My Roon time increased significantly after getting this DAC. Digital doesn’t sound bad after all.

    I've watched this review a couple times and thumbs up for all the insight you've provided. The comment section of this review adds another layer of audio icing and due to your review brought out some "oh really" opinions that resonate goodness. I've had my Ares now for about 8 months running with a Decware amp and Heresy IVs. Seriously considering the Pontus ll for the obvious musical upgrade but damn... the build quality on that unit screams eeeee f***ing gads.

    I got the Pontus II 2 weeks ago. I also use the Denafrips Hermes DDC. I believe the magic of the Denafrips DACs is the very high quality Clocks they use. The clocks are responsible for the 3d Imaging you get for these DAC. So even my older Chord/Internal Dac of the Amp sounded VERY similar to the Pontus II when using the Denafrips Hermes DDC. So I was disappointed as the Pontus II + Hermes sounded very similar to my older setup + Hermes. But after a week of use, Pontus changed! I was not expecting that, even the volume level is not the same as before. Now I get what plp talk about. Its an addictive sound. I want to upgrade to the Vinus.

    I have both the Aries II and the Pontus II and I concur with the assessments 👍🏻
    One thing that keeps jogging in my mind is that I love the tank build of the Pontus which looks like it’s going to last me forever and I also like all these capacitors in there but I really wonder what the lifetime of all these electrolytic caps are like. My suspicion is that eventually they will start degrading before the rest of the DAC and recapping this unit would be quite a chore. I just don’t know if it’s a realistic worry or if they’re just going to last for years on end. For now it’s less than a year old so I’m just going to enjoy the music 🙂

    Great review. Yet another bit of well presented perspective (and comparison) I need in order
    to consider the Pontus over the Aries (or any other DAC around $800.00). My system warrants
    the cost and promise of the Pontus, so, I must ask .... what is the "diminishing return" ratio
    relevant to the higher investment of a Pontus (over an Aries). Well, a commentator below,
    KL, opined a 30 to 50% improvement in sound quality for the extra investment. In audio,
    that would be considered excellent and almost hard to believe. Yes, I know that this is a very
    subjective issue but for myself: if I could listen to classical music at moderate volume and
    not have to listen to sibilant violins and then switch to some well recorded jazz and have it
    be as the recording engineer intended .... that sonic scenario would be a "very good thing".
    Thanks for this ... saw/heard Huff's review and same for A British Audiophile ... I'll watch
    them both again. This Pontus is the first bit of Audio kit I've been excited about in a very long
    time. Vinshine offers a RUclips teardown of this DAC ... very impressive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  2 года назад +5

      Hey Charles, so it's kind of tough to quantify these things but I will try. I do think it's fair to say the Pontus offers an on average 50% improvement across the board vs Ares, not everyone will notice that while others may feel it's an even bigger difference depending on what parts of the sound you're sensitive to or can pickup on. I'll end with this, after I returned the Pontus2 I was a bit shocked that I had a hard time adjusting back to the Ares2 and it felt like more of a downgrade than I expected. After 2-3 days the Ares2 was back to sounding great but stepping back down at first after living with the Pontus2 for 45 days was what I consider a very noticeable difference in the entire presentation. Part of me misses the Pontus2 and wishes I would have bought it but I can't buy every piece of gear that impresses me and like all of us I have to draw the line somewhere with respect to how much money I spend on all this stuff constantly.

With only 35w if it starts to sound bad it means you're distorting so pull back on the volume, this is a common issue with people who use AVR. Even if the AVR says 100w we all know it is an exaggeration. MK2 is easier to drive than original S400 but quality power always matters. For S400 (either one) my theory i:s it is the amps output section's ability to rapidly deliver available power that matters and not so much it's watts. I don’t have a knockout expensive system - Pro-Ject Stream Box S2 Ultra, Iris, Pontus II, Freya Plus, Parasound A23+, the new Buchardt S400’s - but I definitely noticed more space around instruments (almost like they were in their own bubbles, so to speak), more detail and texture, wider (but not deeper) soundstage, and a clarity that the Ares didn’t have. Sometimes I’ll do an upgrade and be unsure whether I heard a difference, but this was not one of those times, and I imagine if I had a better system I’d hear more. I would second the notion of bypassing the Ares and going for the Pontus if you’re on the upgrade path if you can swing it; you’ll save money in the long run. The Iris was not a game-changer for me.

It's shielded to keep EMI/RFI from injecting noise into the Pontus II's dead silence. It's fed via i²s from a Denafrips Hermes that my sony stable cd transport, Wiim Pro and JRiver Media Center PC. It is amazing how much better the Wiim Pro sounds when it's output has been processed and reclocked by the Hermes beforehand. I ditched the wall wart and purchased an LHY 5-watt Linear Power Supply from Vinshine Audio as well which made a huge improvement in the sound quality, most noticeably via increased background silence revealing gobs more inner detail. Strangely, the LPS also resulted in a perceived increase in gain which makes no sense to me. Having added an Iris to my Ares II (Mac Mini using Roon > AQ Carbon USB > Iris > Straight Wire Info-Link Coax > Ares II, using a Musical Fidelity M5si on LS50 Meta), I have noticed a step up in overall quality across the board that I would equate to a (to carry on with the Porsche analogy) Cayman to Cayman S. Ok so maybe not a Cayman GT4 jump, but for an additional $550 it has given me a satisfied impression of a near-as-makes-no-difference notch below a Pontus II with no Iris for $400 less (excluding the coax cable cost) than a Pontus II. Curious if anyone else has gone this same route and agrees because I do feel like the Iris has added some additional magic having ensured a cleaner source.

    Would you compare this analogy to the Rel HT line and the T/x line. As in, if your system is below a certain price point/level of resolution you might be better to take the value in the HT line etc. For instance, I’m debating if the T/9x will satisfy my HT needs knowing the 1205 might not be quite as resolving. But at 3k-4K for the system, maybe the HT line makes more sense. The added 200watts and lower freq range might also add to the value of the HT range, I’m not sure?

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  2 года назад

      mmm yeah kind of, the 9x will always sound better, even on the cheapest of systems but if you're worried about not having enough bass you can save some cash and go for the bigger 1205, it's still a great sounding sub and one of my favs, the 1205 tonally matches everything I've even thrown at it.

    • @markhanna7504
      @markhanna7504 2 года назад

      If your speakers are super fast and resolving and need the sub to keep up (say, planar or electrostatic speakers) then you almost certainly want the t9. I have it paired with my Maggie 1.7 setup and it's fantastic. More than good enough for HT use, but I'm not running a THX surround system or trying to rattle the walls. Pontus II has a lower noise flower more likely due to its vastly superior boxed, dual LPSU configuration. By the way to experience the similar quality increase from Pontus as you got from Ares to Pontus, you can best go to the Holo May KTE at around $5-6k which edges out even the Terminator Plus according to the vast majority of reviewers and users, won 2020 Stereophile product of the year and also performs well above its price point, challenging Dacs up to $15-25k.

      @@NemoPropaganda Few reviewers are hesitant to make such claims as they would be very damaging for the brands that sell sub par $25k Dacs and carry the possible risk of litigation as well. To my ears, the Holo May KTE at the moment bests every Dac I can find on youtube except for MSB Select2 ($100k) and MSB Reference ($40k). It beats lower MSB models which play too warm and soft on transients. You also have to remember like the Pontus II it is sold wholesale, so without the standard 3.5 times dealer markup, so both of those Dacs are realistically worth 3.5 times their price. So that makes Holo May effectively a $21k Dac and therefore less of a surprise that it can beat $25k Dacs. Both brands are able to sell cheaper because they are so good that they require no advertising or local dealer support.

    Couple things that concerns me on the choice would be, the "synergy" with my system. Yeah I'd imagine with a $6 to $10 grand system, the Pontus would compliment a system. But what about a lesser system setup, (Bluesound Node with the Willsenton R8 Tube amp feeding Pendragon speakers)? Would I benefit - or - would it just be an overkill to incorporate the Pontus2 between the Node and R8 integrated amp? Because right now I would like to clear-up some of the "grainy" harsh sound when playing heavier (more multi-instrument involved) music.
    Another affecting decisions is "time". I'm getting trigger-happy on either the Ares II or the Pontus2. BUT, every day I visit Vinshineaudio site
    and -- boom ---, "Backordered" on the Ares II, and, "Preorder" on the Pontus 2.
    Concerns me, because a couple years back (even before covid), I ordered a Shiit Freya+ and found out days later they increase wait time from 2-3 weeks to 6-8 weeks. I cancelled and never looked back at shiit audio equipment again.

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  2 года назад +4

      You should see a benefit from either dac, I can't comment on synergy as I've not heard the R8 nor the Pendragons. If clarity is what you're after the Pontus offers up more of that vs Ares2 coming from the Node 2i myself, Ares did not seem to add more clarity per se, it was more so presented in a more engaging way where Pontus actually gave me more clarity. Do keep in mind more clarity means picking up more imperfections in the recording so complex & heavier music like metal may never sound the way you want because it's usually not recorded all that good to begin with. I have this issue myself and it just seems to me that metal generally sounds better on gear that is less revealing. Like it's always going to sound a little dirty if that makes sense but there are songs that are more clean sounding like Avalanche by Arch Enemy but even that sounds dirty compared to a cleaner recording like Name by Goo Goo Dolls.

    • @BumpNrun69

Silent Lucidity & Anybody Listening, sound great with just Geoff's vocals until all music kicks into gear, then it gets busy (almost distortion like).
      You're right, I'm probably noticing imperfections better than my other system being this one is a Tube amp, better speakers, cables/wires. And undecided whether a DAC or a Tube Pre-amp would solve the nitpick issue.

    Your description of these DACs being about how they make you feel as opposed to how they sound as such resonates with me - even though it is a simplification and of course it's particular characteristics of the way the sound is presented that make the end result possible, as an Ares II owner who also owns a Delta-Sigma Topping D90 DAC, the Ares II has some sort of magic in it that "glues" all frequencies together and adds a tiny bit of wamth (thus sounding less "digital") and creates a beautiful space (not only the size of the soundstage but the holography within it) where instruments can breathe and therefore sound more life-like.
    Do you have any experience with headphones? I am wondering if the upgrade would be worth it in my case given that I only listen to music through headphones, albeit very high-resolving ones - Focal Utopia and Hifiman HE1000se. My personal expectation would be to get more of the same in terms of the life-like experience but with more refinement, especially in the bass area, and better attack/punch.

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  2 года назад

      Hey thanks Michal!! I don't have any experience with headphones but the youtuber midfi guy has a lot of headphone & DAC experience. He has the Ares2 also and has used much more expensive DAC's in his headphone rig so maybe he can answer the question. Currently I have Venus2 and I can tell you it just keeps getting better on speakers. I'd imagine this improvement should carry over to headphones especially resolving ones like the Focal. I'm currently using the Venus2 with Kanta No1 so kind of the speaker version of what you've got :).

The Ares2 is way too down market for the rest of my gear and I should be using something like Venus2 but I don't buy stuff too often for myself. I'd just take the advice I gave in the video, if your system is under $5k between speakers and amp then Ares2 is your best value but if your system is above $5k between amp and speakers then Pontus2 makes a lot of sense. At the end of the day though what you're trying to do is be financially responsible so it you're trying to find the "value" but this is a hobby, there's no established value aside from the value you assign to it. If you want the Pontus2 and you can easily afford it then I say go for it! If it's going to break the bank then maybe stay with the Ares2 :).
