I think a lot of the advice boils down to the fact the Hidden Shrine... is designed as a tournament module that is meant to separate parties who succeed from parties that fail...maybe even by killing the PCs. But playing the Hidden Shrine... for entertainment means setting the players up to discover the fun stuff and the DM's role changes significantly. Nice discussion with some great ideas for making Hidden Shrine... a fun "modern" module. Thanks!

I always imagined they would run it as separate groups. Would be so awesome to hear from Harold Johnson or Jeff R. Leason as to how it really went down!

I really appreciate you keeping up the classic AD&D content. I know you've gotten a huge boost from Pathfinder and it would be easy to leave us "classic fans" who were following you first behind, but you didn't, and I respect that!

      Haha.
When the Vilani arrive here 400 years from now after the planet is a wasteland, destroyed from pollution, nuclear war, and incurable viruses, they uncover the wayback machine vaults hidden beneath the mountains of Colorado.
As they pour through 200 years of internet data, the science office on the left will say, "Captain, Look! An artifact! It's not like the others."
The captain, a man of particular taste in ancient history, culture, and education, leans forward, and says, "Keep that. Delete all the ones with cheesy logos where australopithecines yell into the camera and wave their arms a lot."
Nodding in approval, the science officer scans through the video files, his eyes flitting back and forth as everything plays at 500x speed. "This dude talks a lot. He loved that game. So much passion!"
The Captain leans over, "Yes. Indeed. Not like the others. Must be a video game designer archetype."

@@Classic_DM ... hence, the seed / the real "impetus" of the Interstellar Wars between the Terrans and Vilani can be traced back to this event...

Started it today (5e version in Tales of the Yawning Portal).
    I got really lucky:
They first tried to place the non-animating figures in a niche, that didn't do anything, so they put them aside, -> on the floor

People need to read those old modules carefully. You are right when you say they are magical. Those younger players and DMs who have been weened on CGI do not know the power of these old adventures. They were lethal like newer systems were not; but they were thrilling, too. I can tell that you feel the same way I do about them; I can hear it in your voice, and that is why I'm doing such a deep dive into your backlog.
Maybe I've mentioned that I have a Greyhawk blog called "Greyhawk Musings." It's in its infancy (40+ posts, 22,000 views), but I'm loving it. And its also keeping me busy and sane in these trying times.
Keep up the good work. Your content is fantastic!

This is great, I'm running Tamoachan tommorow. Unfortunately I'm attempting a one-shot so I'm dropping them in the roost of the conch because as you mentioned this room eats so much time.

This might not be as flashy as all the pathfinder stuff coming out or generate the same number of views - but dang, I sure prefer videos like this. Would love to see you cover more rooms from this classic dungeon. Definitely one of the best dungeons to choose from as I think nearly every room in The Hidden Shrine belies this kind of depth. Thanks for touching on a great start to the dungeon.

@@Classic_DM - It's definitely not the flashiest room in the the dungeon. But I would love to see somebody discuss Room 37. BED of XILONEN.
The room isn't terribly complicated but the Rod of Electrification you get in the older modules vs the Wand of Lightning Bolts in the 5E version are two very different magical items and one of the biggest moments the module diverges from the original.
And how many parties are going to run across this item in the first place? Or the fact that the Fantasy Grounds polyp is just a reskin of a roper (it even shows a picture of a roper under the monster's description).
I ran across these discrepancies while looking up a good room - and from a game design perspective - these changes to room 37 intrigue me as much as any of the rooms and would love to hear some input! Thanks!
