bring your work close to each other and preheat the glass with just torch if its pyrex or quartz . forget Bunsen burner, could use it for annealing some but just use torch with sooty flame works great, Great machining job on lathe

this is beyond awesome. I'm trying to do this right now actually, but my plan is to build tooling rollers on each end of the "lathe" instead of traditional lathe chucks. So i definitely expect problems with syncing my two rotations. The plan is to use two stepper motors and try syncing them. we shall see i guess. But thanks so much for posting this, I was a bit stuck on how I was going to do the torch carriage part, are you just using track wheels on that extruded aluminum piece holding the torch? also do you ever feel the need to adjust your rotating piece or torch z height? I wasn't sure if I should design that into my system or not.

Good work! What are you using for the bearings? Two pillows blocks on each side?

It looks like 2 flange bearings on each side- but yes 😉

You are my hero. Did you make that torch yourself too? Do you have any drawings of the design? Also, I'd love to see more of that torch.

Nice job best I"ve seen in a long time. Don't know if you will read this but I have to as if you would share details on the chuck you made I would like to make some for my Lathe. I'm in the usa and don't speak German just a old Texas boy well old man know. I make glass oil lamps in my retirement years. Thanks best regards Thomas Schwab

That’s the part that looks the most difficult to make yourself.
It looks like some 3/4” stock attached to those sliding positioners (whatever you want to call the 3 parts) that are at equal angles. They look like they close/open with a drive belt that some how loops around all 3 equally (backside). As you turn the drive belt (probably a 1/2” or 3/4”) it rotates the positioners equally. More than likely you would set the “full close” position and then make the positioners fully closed, hopefully making them true.
The biggest thing is- it’s not like a metal lathe where you have to be within a few ten-thousandths, you can have some play because you can manipulate the glass.
Hope this might help- sometimes I play a machinist on tv 😉
