This is AMAZING!!! Thank you so much!! When she got married, she was forced to quit teaching ;) Laws prohibited married women from teaching. Just a little difference. But it did allow her to focus more time on her family and St. Lukes. Another fun fact. Her hoe was always in her name. There is no record of her husband being on the paperwork. I believe it is Lee (second pronunciation) She also worked along with a lot of the big Harlem renaissance names. And was responsible for Jackson ward being nicknamed the Black Wall Street. The hippodrome theater (still there today had many of the great jazz and blues musicians and they stayed that the Black Only hotel across the street. SO COOL!!! Her St. Luke Emporium took up 4 blocks on Broad street when it was illegal for black people to own property on Broad. Today there is only one black-owned business on that section of broad. The church she grew up in, First African Baptist, also on broad has an interesting history. It had to be rotated so the address was on the cross street. Thanks so much for this video!!! I just spent three months in Richmond, basically studying the history there. I was done working by 9am...It was an amazing experience!! There is so much in Jackson Ward.. I'll be posting on Instagram.. #RVADiaryFF if you want to see more ;)
