- Trying to get continuous dialogue from this guy was harder than I expected so I took the "mash unrelated lines together with loose context" approach instead.
Sonic characters were what got me into drawing as a kid and it's been about eight years since I last drew one, so I wanted to see what I could do with all the 3D form and perspective practice my 13-year-old self skipped over.
New stuff I tried:
Really close-up shots of a character's face + being a lot more careful about on-model keyframes during close-ups
More squash and stretch on the head outside of 2-frame accents
More diverse expressions and body language like laughs/chuckles, reacting to an invisible speaker, and different head-shaking angles
All lines are taken from Sonic Twitter Takeovers #4 through #7

I love how Tails' earpiece is actually in his ear.
His ass is listening
And his chair has a "slot" for his tails to go through.
… but how’s it staying up there…?
It almost became the situation where (example: being Arthur with headphones on yet his ears on top of his head) a character (mostly animal) wears the headphones wrong for their ears yet they are able to still hear the music or person talking to them ie cartoon logic at its many finest.

Tails can invent things practically from thin air but failed to make a good paper airplane, feels oddly fitting lmao.
I mean, Albert Einstein couldn't tie his own shoes.

I can see this as the end of a running gag of an episode where the whole gang's been trying to remember how Tails taught them how to make a paper plane with their all their attempts failing before its revealed that he doesn't know either despite being a literal engineer.
This actually sounds like a great idea for a Sonic Boom episode lol

I appreciate the way his eyes dart around while listening. It's what real people do when listening closely to people that aren't right in front of them.
I'm more of a guy who can walk the entire Great Wall of China while talking over the phone :D
Excellent work on the more diverse expressions and body language, in particular those micro anticipations before delivering his lines that perfectly encapsulates his though process. Makes the anim look that much more authentic and lively.

@@el_lea I skipped Roblox for this one, the program I use to animate has a 1-point-perspective ruler that lets me draw lines with a vanishing point like this much more easily :)

Using the isolated voice lines for one end of a phone call is so creative!
Imagine a "Tails plays Mario kart" or something like that, just having Tails' face in the corner of the screen, looking like he's actually playing the game. That would be like a whole new kind of experience.

The whole animation is amazing, but the facial animation, chair turn, and hand movement at 0:20 is so smooth!
Tails' character animation here is BEAUTIFULLY done! I'm also very impressed on animating paper being folded into an almost complete paper airplane!
And his voice makes sense, which is kinda rare with sonic parodies
Everything has been washed away by CGI nowadays, this brings me back to the Don Bluth era of animation, beautifully curated. I genuinely wished we could get a new Sonic show with this style of animation.

I like this characterization of Tails. He's a good person but not afraid to get snarky as well.
I love the 70s Disney-esque pencil lines that appear when the poses go static. It has that hand-drawn charm.
For some reason, I have a hunch about the “incident” regarding to the lines “we don’t let him on the internet anymore”.

Sonic: So I was idly browsing Ao3, when I noticed that the top ship for our franchise is me with Shadow, which I thought was pretty funny. So I picked a couple at random and DM'd them to him without really thinking about it. It was just supposed to be a joke. Y'know, I probably should've skimmed them first... or at least, like, checked the age ratings... that would've been a better way to go about it, in retrospect.

I really enjoy this version of Tails. He just seems like a really good natured guy, not overly a coward, and not too innocent and a perfect sidekick. I feel like Sega hasn't ever nailed his character that well, but this does a good job.

There aren’t a whole lot of things on the internet that are literally perfect, but this is a new addition to that club. The fluidity, the expressiveness, the lipsyncing… just incredible. You’re easily one of the best animators on RUclips and I can’t wait to see what you do next.

The shifts between the casual expression here are so good! You can reall track how the conversation is going from his body language and face! Also very nice art style!

I just realized that the little subtitles in the corner aren't just for fun, they're for drawing him speak! Instead of "nothing," it says "nuh-theen," as that actually allows the artist to demonstrate and visualize what those sounds look like! That's cool!

I love this so much. His movements are so fluid and dynamic. Even just the little environmental reactions have so much life to them
This animation is so good, the way the character can express the feelings of a conversation where the other participant isn't even visible or audible is astonishing! Plus, in NO PART of this animation the character moves or transitions through one expression and the other felt forced. It was all so genuine and expressive! This animation is GREAT!
You're showing great promise and progress with all the work you've been putting out lately. Timing, spacing, antics, accents, and subtlety in your animation are becoming more locked in with each new short. Performance and shot rhythm are really on point too! I really think your willingness to engage with much more subtle and everyday motions like playing an instrument, or in this case folding a paper airplane during a conversation, are really paying off as far as learning animation techniques. If you can make the everyday things visually interesting then the more bombastic and immediate actions you make will be all the more exciting. An enviable level of commitment to practicality. Excellent stuff, be proud, and keep going!
Only minor critique to give. It happens very rarely, but your masses will distort now and then. It seems to stem from both the everyday struggle of locking them down, and also that you're still getting a handle on 3d shapes and perspective. That stuff is hard, and given your progress so far you're clearly taking the right steps in understanding it and will have it locked in soon enough. You're mostly there and have the gist of it so it won't be much longer. Also watch out for tangent lines. Happens to the best!

Hands are hard to draw, and crazy complicated to animate. You animated them FOLDING A PAPER AIRPLANE! Amazing!!

Man wtf as a fellow animator belive me when I say this is professional quality. The keyframing are already 10/10 but to also do this insanely smooth animation without it feeling floaty is insane. AND THE CHARACTERIZATION OH MY GOD. I would really like to know how long you spent making this but since your last animation was 2 months ago and if you are a hobbyist then you must have been fast as hell.

Okay, everything about this is absolutely great, but what really draws me in is how naturally expressive Tails is. The movement and actions are so life like! This is really stunning work!
