  • In today's video, we replace the notorious M54 Coolant lines under the intake manifold on a 2005 BMW X3 3.0 liter. This is a common issue among all M54 straight 6 equip BMW models of the 2000s. This procedure is nearly identical for the E46 3 Series, E85 Z4, E60 5 Series, and E53 X5.
This video is intended for reference and entertainment purposes. Please remember to torque each fastener to the proper specifications.

Very impressive. Thanks for showing this. What is the difference in the two coolant temp sensors. The one you showed and the one at the front of the car?

I just did this job and replaced the CCV but new pipes are leaking coolant like crazy. I will take everything appart again and this time use some RTV or JB Weld waterweld on the end. I don't want to deal with this problem ever again .

I'm sorry to hear that. I've had similar issues using cheap replacement parts on other M54 engines. Using coolant safe RTV is never a bad idea. Best of luck.

I didn't even know you could access the 16 mm bracket bolt without removing the throttle body

I love german cars, but jesus christ overengineering is killing me, different bolts, lugs, no space in the engine bay, to change something you have to take half of the engine😁

How much time did this work take excluding the time to bleed the system at the end of the job?

Hi Ron, I think it took me 5 to 6 hours to film the process and complete the job. I would expect a seasoned DIYer to be faster without a camera.

On my 1997 528 , it overheated. All parts good, BUT very dirty between radiator and air conditioner radiator, l removed coolant radiator and pressure washed it with water and air nozzle off air compressor. Leaves between parts restricted air flow. All good now for last 5 years

HELPFUL TIP: THE O-RING SECTION WILL PROBABLY BREAK OFF IN THE BLOCK. USE A SECTION OF HACKSAW BLADE OR JIGSAW BLADE WITH VICE GRIPS. CUT SOME GROOVES IN THE PLASTIC. BREAK IT WITH A SMALL SCREWDRIVER AND THEY WILL POP RIGHT OUT. DONT PRY ON THE BOCK PLZ!
