GUNNER Travel and Event The newer 300 movie was TOO CG for me, but I fell in love w/the original The 300 Spartans movie, when I was a kid! Luckily, I was stationed in northern Greece, years ago; I loved to travel around there when I could- Pella,Philipi, Thermopolae, even the Acropolis+ Corinth. We even were supposed to go up Mt Olympis,w/my Greek friend, but by the time we got there, it was too late in the day. I regret not making it to Sparta, though! But, I still have a statue of Leonidas and Athena in my living room! We actually named our daughter Athena! Beautiful name! (She’s very pretty, so it worked out. Ha)

Nice to see that present-day Sparta seems to be a thriving town and that the remains of Leonidas and his personal bodyguard were returned to their native city. I wonder if there are first-hand accounts of the transfer and re=burial.

I was just wondering if there were first-hand accounts of those going to Thermopylae, collecting whatever skeletons were haphazardly buried there -- HOW they knew which one was Leonidas' skeleton (since there was no DNA testing yet back then) - and how many they brought back home to Sparta. That's all. I was not casting aspersions or doubt since it's over 2,000 years ago already.
The dead were buried in Thermopylae and they had a common grave there. The bones were transferred to the “Leonidaion” sanctuary in Sparta. They remained there till 1730 AD when ancient Sparta was destroyed by the French b@stard abba Michel Fourmont (1690-1746). I have seen personally, nine (!) fingers of the right hand of saint John the Baptist. A very beautiful vid. The statue of Leonidas is quite impressive but I find it sad to see the tomb has been left in ruins.

Nice to see that present-day Sparta seems to be a thriving town and that the remains of Leonidas and his personal bodyguard were returned to their native city. I wonder if there are first-hand accounts of the transfer and re=burial.
The sons of the dead built that sanctuary. It is impossible to have buried the wrong bones.
@@TakisTravel I NEVER said or implied that the wrong bones were transferred. I was just wondering if there were first-hand accounts of those going to Thermopylae, collecting whatever skeletons were haphazardly buried there -- HOW they knew which one was Leonidas' skeleton (since there was no DNA testing yet back then) - and how many they brought back home to Sparta. That's all. I was not casting aspersions or doubt since it's over 2,000 years ago already.
The dead were buried in Thermopylae and they had a common grave there. The bones were transferred to the “Leonidaion” sanctuary in Sparta. On the other hand, as Christian theology says “Believe and do not search”. I have seen personally, nine (!) fingers of the right hand of saint John the Baptist. Four in the great mosque in Damascus where there is the grave of the saint, two in Pleven, Bulgaria and three in Cetinje, Montenegro. So don’t go so far.
