    The reason these metal bands survived was also due to PANTERA's rise to prominence. Grunge didn't really kill good metal, it wiped out the worst of glam and the older L.A. acts.
    Let's not forget that Far Beyond Driven was a #1 album in 94, it wasn't as if Seattle killed metal, that's revisionist history.

      @@MetalPersonJ To an extent, yes....but MTV had more power than he did to shape the tastes and create popularity.
      MTV had become the most powerful music promotional tool in the music industry, without MTV support a band/album would go nowhere, even if they were Nirvana or Soundgarden.

      I was going to reply with that. It is funny when you think of it....Sept 1990 Rust In Peace comes out and they are dressed in bullet belts, tight jeans....very 80s. Nevermind is released exactly 12 months later Sept 1991. We will never see an culture shift like that in style/music again that fast. With that said Megadeth thrived in 92 but as you said they did smartly adjust just a tiny bit of the image but not enough to alienate fans. They still had the long hair and playing aggressive looking Jacksons.

    That was a depressing time for me as far as music goes.
    It's like music got worse and didn't progress but regressed.
    If The Aristocrats came out in the 90's and set the stage that would've worked out for me! (;

    Metallica, Megadeth and Pantera had their biggest selling albums during grunge. And it was because of their harder edge which served them well commercially during grunge as it was seen as more authentic than Motley crue and Poison.
    Plus Mettalica and Megadeth, and Slayer, had heavy punk influences just like grunge.

    • @simons2155
      @simons2155 2 месяца назад

      they did and in the case of metallica and megadeth they would have done better if they didn't adopt softer music/image in the mid to late 90s like metallica cutting their hair and softer music or like megadeth going more radio friendly and ending with risk which was a disaster
      this is where pantera did the smartest thing and went harder and harder as the 90s went on leading them to keep more and more of their fan base though to be fair metallica was so big it didnt matter what they did

      Dude most of the thrash bands like Exodus, Death Angel, Forbidden, Vio-lence, Dark Angel vanished along with glam acts it was just simply the record labels that wanted to try to kill off metal using grunge as the tool.

    They trimmed their hair and wore flannel. Dave M. said the record label made them wear flannel in the photo shoots, he said looks angry in those photos because he was. He hated wearing flannel. Man in the Box was an okay song, but Alice in Chains did nothing for me, still don't.

      They wore flannel before they cut their hair though… There are a lot of photos from the ‘Symphony of Destruction’ era. The label ‘forced’ them on every picture? 🤔 I don’t think you could force Mustaine to do that.

    Metal being on the outs in the 90’s wasn’t really the result of grunge taking over, it was the reaction of mainstream metal artists second guessing their audience by attempting to go alternative.
