Unfortunately, you need < 25 Infamy, have them *not* have "Defend the Borders" goal, great relations, and you need an obligation from them. (It might be possible without an obligation, but +50 is usually it.)
Good luck getting spain as a protectorate though? Lol this makes no real sense as a strat since u cant protectorate anything meaningful through diplomacy
@@Caesar-- Bankrolling makes it easy, if somewhat expensive. Japan, Spain, Portugal Sweden (even as Scandinavia), Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands, and some others are absolutely possible. In terms of worth, snagging the Netherlands means inheriting the East Indies, Japan has a bit of everything, etc.
Protectorates only good use is making sure they never leave your market. Once you get your SoL higher then theirs, you can just siphon off their population if they are in your market.

You should try to get the achievement, "Minors, not Miners" as Langfang. It's tough but also fun because you start in the Qing market, so you can exploit many market imbalances. Also, they start as one of the most progressive nation, so it's fun to go all the way. I'm trying for a socialist Langfang, I got all of the starting island but needed Vietnam for their opium and population. Non-Ironman mode btw
My great - grandfather said that the red army in 1941 was so bad because of mass desertion and belief in germans civility. Obviously early Soviet Union wasn't a very good country to live in couse of civil war and many years of drought and poor harvest. So people thought that germans are better than soviets. Or join the Chinese market and sell them all the opium they could ever want. Either way, total economic dominance.

I was able to form Italy by starting as Sardinia-Piedmont and declaring war on Austria within the first 2 years of the game demanding Lombardia and Venetia. Only Two-Sicilies and, for some reason, Greece joined me but it was enough to actually win. Just use the superior S-P units to defend and let Two-Sicilies do the attacking. Their troops suck but sometimes they get lucky and actually occupy some terrain and that tanks Austria's war support faster. After that, strong-arming the minor Italian nations is child's play.
You are really lucky guy, try some lottery... Anytime i tried to do the same , big countries were like "it is gangbang time", especially being cornered by both France and Austria is pain. I tried switch early to skirmish infantry, tried to just build up barracks, to make armed forces happy...it was not enough , so i just waited to zero infamy.

It's specifically true for the great qing, doing a build of deficit spending or balance income spending leads to a massive difference in terms of gdp growth. You want to tax the hell out of the people and creats need and supply in the market by aggressive economic expansion. Like build minings of iron,coal preparing for production switch and etc. Not to tax the people less, that doesn't do jack shit, taxing less on the poor doesn't change the fact that they are still poor as hell, your job is to provide as much job as possible,get them out of the field.

You don't need customs union to unify. If you go straight fo tech and have good relationship you will get their support anyway.
