Learn how to build your own professional-looking broadband bass trap that works down to 40Hz and a diffusor front that keeps your high-end lively:

Have you been in this situation:
You are mixing in your room, maybe with some basic treatment, and whenever you take your mixes outside of the studio, they turn out a little bit harsh, just a bit too bright?
There's just a little bit too much high end in your mixes.
Consistently with every other mix, you're just obviously boosting the high end too much.
And because you're also feeling that your room is overdamped you're wondering if the high end is just a little bit too controlled in the room.
Is that the reason why you're constantly mixing your records too bright?
    And will diffusion help?
Will putting up some scattering around the room help to get that high end in check, maybe lengthen it a little bit, balance it out in a way so that your mixes don't end up so bright anymore?
Now this seems to be a logical conclusion at first glance:
Overdamped high end ► too bright mixes.
But in fact, there's a crucial thing that you're missing here, and that's what I want to talk about in this week's video.

Checking out reference mixes in your room is important too. Learn what good sounds like in your room

As a 65 year old man, my hearing is succumbing to the effects of aging, particularly in the high end. As a result, i think i 'hype' these frequencies, in my mixes. Getting this balance right, is an ongoing struggle. It's not always due to your room, or treatment etc. P.S. getting old sucks!😂 Keep up the good work Jesco, your videos are golden!

You should make a video too about an engineers curve.
I mean, you control the low end/ mid. You do a room correction for the very last part. But than when people have a comfort work curve you should make an engineer curve too.

It’s so hard for me to use reference tracks. I get so frustrated 🤦‍♂️ I am determined to figure out how to mix drum and bass

Do you mean by high end 4khz to 11.5khz the highest frequency where RT decay is measured. Or above 11.5khz and if so, how to measure the decay of these frequencies?

I found it to be -really- important to install one acoustic device at a time and to have music playing when you do so you can hear the difference in real time and further a/b with and without that one piece if needed. In doing that you discover if it's a positive or negative addition to the room sound and you find out exactly what it is doing and at what frequencies. Besides controlling the room you are very much impacting the frequency response and tone. When adding bass related treatment it is really critical to keep the tone and balance because bass treating objects are often very narrow range, so it's easy to ruin bass tone.... cheers.

For a mixing room, surely the more treatment the better as all you are doing is removing more and more of the room. This could of course be detrimental for recording in that room, as you may like the way an instrument sounds in that space, so the impact of the room is a benefit, not a hinderance.

Modern mixes are not bright they are RIDICULOUSLY bright. If I'm not referencing when mixing or mastering something I would craft the sound so it sounds great to my ears, test it on multiple speakers, car, expensive headphones, cheap headphones. It just sounds great to my ears. AND THEN if I reference it to some modern "TOP 50 pop hits" the difference is ridiculous, I need to broad boost like 10+ or more dB in 1-10kHz range to match the high mids & high frequencies. It's part of loudness war thing and engineers competing over each other. Kinda sad as this kind of brightness induces fatigue almost instantly.
