Pancake racing is a tradition from Olney (near Milton Keynes) we’ve always been taught it started from when a woman was late for church so in the middle of making her pancake, she ran to the church, frying pan and pancake it hand! We hold the race every year still with our frying pans :)
I like fluffy American pancakes and I love European crepes. My favorite is a savory turkey crepe. It's a crepe filled with sliced turkey and has a thick turkey gravy both in and on top of the crepe. Then I like to follow it up with a sweet crepe filled with peaches and topped with whipped cream. They are both to die for. Have a nice Lent!
As Mikhail Shapiro said before, in Russia and in some post-Soviet countries during the week in spring people eat a lot of pancakes with different condiments, like butter, jam or anything you like. These psncakes are flat as well, and very delicious. We don't run with them though.
I had an aunt that participated in a pancake race when I was growing up. I believe they were still living in London at the time, so probably a neighborhood event but I do remember seeing clips of pancake races in villages around the country on TV.
Pancake races absolutely ARE a british thing and also some local traditions….In Scarborough the town turns out to skip - on the foreshore the road is closed and people use ropes from the boats stretched across the road to make their skipping ropes - this is an old tradition.
Mum always put corn in the batter and we ate them with sausages. We did the syrup and butter ones too but on pancake Tuesday, it's more like a 'meal' so we did the corn ones. Last night, my 'tester' to make sure the pan was just right was covered with Little Friskies Indoor Sea Selection so kitty got to have a pancake, too.
Joe, and Lia, that a wonderful tradition! I DO wish that someone would create working Transporter Stations so that we could beam over to your market for some hot crepes! Yummmmy!! Sounds wonderful and such a joyous way to begin Lent. Although, sigh, we Yanks (even those not born north of the Mason/Dixon Line) do love our pancakes as often as possible. My son-in-law and grandson make crepes every Saturday morning for my daugher This makes it a great bonus to visit them for a weekend. I'm only able to make the fluffy kind, yet they're still great. Yum. I hope that you weren't as cold as you looked. Thanks so much for sharing!
I remember watching a youtube vid with an American and a Brit having a pancake contest. The American made the American style pancake and the Brit made the crepe style. They invited a bunch of their Brit friends over to taste them. All the Brits were blown away by the American style pancakes over the crepe style. I am a waffle or French toast guy so it does not matter to me. Just thought it was funny.
Hi, Joel and Lia. I've heard of the pancake race in other parts of England, but I've never heard of it in London before. Also, I've heard other people try to explain the difference between British and American pancakes. They usually list all the ingredients that are in each. But I don't need a recipe - I could google that. Joel's explanation was the best I've ever heard - simple and to the point.
I'm not a big YouTubie, but I just found y'all's channel today and couldn't help but keep watching your vlogs and skits! I always find myself smiling (and laughing) without realizing it - y'all are funny and refreshing and make me feel light-hearted :) Happy Valentine's Day and Ash Wednesday!
Sadly I couldn’t find any pancake celebrations here in Melbourne this year. It’s sad that so many traditions are being forgotten nowadays. Nice video guys.
Here in New Orleans, we are WAY too drunk on Fat Tuesday to manage a pancake--flat or otherwise. But the two of you should get out and do more of these "on-the-street" vids.
How do you spell the name of the market where you did this video? I visited a few years ago and our friend from London took us to a market...I can’t for the life of me figure out where it was and this looks similar
We don't put baking soda in American pancakes. It's baking powder that makes them fluffy. Mine are made with flour, baking powder, eggs, milk, vanilla and, cinnamon and sometimes mini chocolate chips
You're only half right. Baking Powder is part baking soda and part cream of tartar (an acid). An acid is required to activate baking soda (aka sodium bicarbonate aka bicarb). You can make fluffy pancakes without using baking powder if you use baking soda plus something acidic, like using buttermilk or putting in a little bit of vinegar with your milk.
Pancakes are cheap to make. Good. Can eat them plain. With maple syrup. Butter. Whipped cream. Blackberries. Strawberries. Jelly. Jam. Chocolate syrup. Put anything you want on them. There is an IHOP (International House of Pancakes) near me. Eat all the pancakes you want. Good day to you both.
So. The main difference in your vids since last year is that now you would've taken us into restaurants with you whilst you tried all pancake varieties on the menu 😋 😝💖 P.S. Your next trip idea: Cape Cod
YOu talk about British pancakes and you go to Borough market and then show French Crepes...???!!! As for pancakes races I did it in school in the 80s so its not just there in the market.... (
I love pancakes! Pancake races are no big deal really. I run around my house flipping a PROPER AMERICAN pancake pretty much every day. Take care and I will see my way out. :-)
I wanted to keep my previous post dignified and family friendly. For that reason, I DID NOT say that while flipping pancakes I'm, ah... semi-clothed.Not to worry I've not injured myself in quite some time acting on this flippin' British tradition. I'm now looking for the door. :-)
Love this video! Such fun! This is really cool. Great job! Thanks guys. BTW: it's Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras/Carnival in the US today. I need something spicy! Love and cheers! 👍💗😘🇬🇧
Y'all should do something with comparing the Caribbean Islands, like Trinidad, to England. Trinidad has Carnival!! Where tourists and celebs come every year to fete(party) and have a fun time! It's also a multicultural island! Tobago is its twin island so it's Trinidad and Tobago. Tobago is where you could go to lime(relax and chill), of course there are many places in Trinidad to lime!😂 You could talk about their slang/accent, cultures, food and compare it to England.
I'm from Canada and I made pancakes with blueberries and pecans with orange zest in the batter. I serve them with lots of Maple syrup and a dash of cinnamon. YUM!! P.S. I'm waiting to hear of your decision about where your next "work" destination will be!!!! GO JOEL & LIA!!!!!!!!
🎉🙌26k+ subscribers! On Pancake Day! You're both still killin it! Congrats! Mardi Gras is rokin here and as we say "laissez les bon temps rouler". Let the good times roll! Love and cheers! 🎉🎑🙌😁💗😘🇬🇧
It was such a great a video! I like these contents when you aren't in the house but somewhere outside in London. 😊 By the way, we're also having Pancake Day tomorrow in our school (in Hungary) to celebrate the Valentine's Day. 😊
Flapjacks, Griddlecakes, Pancakes, Fritters, Hotcakes, Slapjacks ... they go by lots of names. It's just that in the US, they're fluffy like cake. In Europe, they're flat like crepes.
doing some more research would have been good to find out if pancakes races were tradition or not nationwide....its great to be cute and fluffy in front of the camera but how awesome it would be for you guys if you actually new what you were talking about....take your video making a step further...make it better!!! good luck!
American top tip you might not know (I hope I used "top tip" correctly. LOL): Sometimes non-profit groups/civic clubs/Boy Scout troops, etc. will hold "Pancake Breakfasts". It's an all-you-can eat breakfast of pancakes and all the trimmings to help raise money for their group. The members of the group prepare, serve and clean up and they are usually held at a meeting/event hall with a kitchen.
This is soo interesting. I like the concepts of the way u make pancakes over there and stuff a whole bunch of stuff in it. Sad it is only one day though. ☺

We hold the race every year still with our frying pans :)
🥞 Here in Russia, we have to eat pancakes during all this week 😂
It's called 'pancake week', 'butter week' or 'maslenitsa'.
Только хотел написать об этом :)
That's very cool!
(^_^)
Serbs too
Lemon and sugar is the king, and always will be

I just happened to visiting the UK (from the US) not knowing it would be Pancake Day. Delicious surprise! 🥞😋

Happy Pancake Day everybody 🥞
Same to you. Quite a shame people can't do the same things this year in 2021
You too!
Joe, and Lia, that a wonderful tradition!

In Milwaukee we eat paczkis which are sugar donuts filled with a prune jam or some type of jelly filling and these you can only find during Mardi Gras

Here in Florida we had pancakes at church tonight for shrove Tuesday. I’m Episcopalian which is part of the Anglican communion.

What a fun little celebration. I never thought of savory pancakes. A must try for me.
Yes definitely try! (and have a sweet one after!)

Aw thanks so much Jessica! Especially, coming from a "non-Youtubie", that's amazing! Glad we can make ya smile!
🇨🇦Love that it is more than just making pancakes at home. You have almost a festival for it. Wish we had something similar in Vancouver.
Already love it and have barely watch the video 😂 you guys are awesome! 🇬🇧
stop lying to them
Thanks for the video, I'll show it to my pupils (Learners of English as second languague 1st year of secondary school)
There are towns in America where housewives race up the street flipping a pancake on Pancake Day.
Love pancakes 🥞 and I'll be having my usual 4 or 5 later.😋
These kind ov videos in the streets are, to me, much better and lively than the ones where you are just sitting and chatting!
Thank you! We’ll keep that in mind!
Being British: Joel & Lia Don't listen to him. I like listening to your upside down perspectives. LOL
Next time you are out and about can you do a food or restaurant review at, "The Table Cafe", which is not to far from Borough Market? Thank You.
Sadly I couldn’t find any pancake celebrations here in Melbourne this year. It’s sad that so many traditions are being forgotten nowadays. Nice video guys.
Anyone can say "as flat as a pancake", but the Brits mean it!!
BNL07604 like Russians do it
I LOVE PANCAKES
US TOO
Here in New Orleans, we are WAY too drunk on Fat Tuesday to manage a pancake--flat or otherwise. But the two of you should get out and do more of these "on-the-street" vids.
haha! No alcohol involved over here sadly!
Happy Lent!
It's not just back in the day guys. Many #Catholics still #fast for #Lent.
How do you spell the name of the market where you did this video? I visited a few years ago and our friend from London took us to a market...I can’t for the life of me figure out where it was and this looks similar
You talked about shrove Tuesday before, so I actually made pancakes here in Germany 😍😍🥞
Ah amazing! Great memory! Happy Pancake Day!
Super super happy to have collabed :) Cheers to many more good videos to come 🥞

Anyone else notice this video didn't tell us about what Lent or Ash Wednesday is?
I always did wonder why British pancakes were flat. I prefer that! LOOK AT YOU ROCKSTARS PUTTING TOGETHER AND POSTING A VIDEO ALL IN ONE DAY. Xx
Karen Murray if you prefer there way then eat a crepe 🤨

IHOP is the most amazing place for late night bites - the selection they have of pancakes is AMAZING
Thanks for teaching me something I never heard of before
Cool video as usual! In Russia we have the whole pan-cake week! It's a traditional holiday.
You guys are good, really good! And so natural!:)
Wow 60fps video quality!!!!
Lemon and sugar sounds great!
Whatever happened to shrove Tuesday
So. The main difference in your vids since last year is that now you would've taken us into restaurants with you whilst you tried all pancake varieties on the menu 😋 😝💖 P.S. Your next trip idea: Cape Cod
I love the 5 Things Need to Know About Pancake Day in the UK, thank you and Happy Pancake Day, Joel and Lia!! 🇬🇧😍

I just ate my pancakes an hour before knowing its Pancake Day

Lucky i think i should go there.
Correct, we call those those crepes here in the United States.
Ah I see! Whatever they are they’re delicious

Prounced “crapes”
@@leslieharris2536 craps 😂
Off course you do
We celebrated pancake day last week.
YOu talk about British pancakes and you go to Borough market and then show French Crepes...???!!! As for pancakes races I did it in school in the 80s so its not just there in the market.... (
🥞 🥞 🥞such interesting video 💗💗💗
Thank you!
Only 3 days ago did I get informed there was a real thing called pancake day. Wow
I love pancakes! Pancake races are no big deal really. I run around my house flipping a PROPER AMERICAN pancake pretty much every day. Take care and I will see my way out. :-)
Hahaha! You’re hilarious!
I wanted to keep my previous post dignified and family friendly. For that reason, I DID NOT say that while flipping pancakes I'm, ah... semi-clothed.Not to worry I've not injured myself in quite some time acting on this flippin' British tradition. I'm now looking for the door. :-)
American pancakes for the win!!
Hell yeah!! 'Murica!
That's look soo good 😍😍
They were delicious! And it was a fun day out!
Love this video! Such fun! This is really cool. Great job! Thanks guys. BTW: it's Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras/Carnival in the US today. I need something spicy! Love and cheers! 👍💗😘🇬🇧
Thanks Tek! Our DOP is an American and he said that too! Not heard of those celebrations before!
I used to compete in the pancake race in Lower school.
Did ya win?
Y'all should do something with comparing the Caribbean Islands, like Trinidad, to England.

Shrove Tuesday in US
Liberal Kansas has a race against Olney England with pancakes every year for pancake day.
Ah amazing!!!

It was such a great a video! I like these contents when you aren't in the house but somewhere outside in London. 😊
By the way, we're also having Pancake Day tomorrow in our school (in Hungary) to celebrate the Valentine's Day. 😊
That’s good to know! Thanks Petra! Amazing! Enjoy the pancakes!
Thanks, I will.😄
I think what we in the US call pancakes are technically called, Flapjacks. The words are interchangeable but most of us just say pancakes.
Flapjacks, Griddlecakes, Pancakes, Fritters, Hotcakes, Slapjacks ... they go by lots of names. It's just that in the US, they're fluffy like cake. In Europe, they're flat like crepes.
Its de pancake day is tour favorita day 🎶🎶
On this day we eat paczki(jelly donut), same concept
We have pancake day in Kansas
I didn’t know pancakes in the U.K. are like crepes!! I’d prefer that style than those fluffy pancakes :)
Never heard of Pancake Day before about an hour ago when I saw a Twitter post from another RUclipsr talking about it.
Ah amazing! Well now you know!
Guyss, ahh adore 🥞👨🏽👩🏽
What a coincidence! My boss from the UK was telling me about pancake day today at work. I had never heard of pancake day beforehand.
I wish Pancake Day existed in France 😍🥞
Mardi gras, n'est pas?
Speak of the Devil! Those crepes look amazing! 😍
haha, you can't compare them to normal pancakes really - they're both great!
@@ThoseTwoBrits1 What are u on about, thin pancakes are "normal pancakes" they're older than the American pancakes and the USA itself.
Great content! Really enjoyed. I look forward to seeing your channel grow!
Ah notifications takes me to the new videos recommendations does not.
Wait... I thought you were going to choose one, show it to us and then eat it. How can you do a video about pancakes and then not show one to us?
Thought pancake day was yesterday
Mardis Gras here in Louisiana before Ash Wednesday today. We eat King cake.
We have traditionally a pancake day every week. It's Thursday .;?)
haha! Wish that was the same here!
This is Fat Tuesday!! Pancake day IS any day.
I don't really like American pancakes much. I can't find anyone near me who knows how to make a crepe, let alone what it is now.
It’s Ahmazing to see how far you guys have come since this video one year ago ! So very proud of you both ! 💕🐝😊💕
Aw thanks so much!!!!
Happy Pancake Day one year later LOL.
fuaa loco quiero ir a UK a hacer eso :O
Interesting!
Hi Joel and Lia. Great.Happy Shrove Tuesday. Thanx
Interesting and yummy 😊
How fun
I LOVE THIS! ❤ Mmm mmm ...
А у нас он масленицой называется...
Yum!!!
Soooo delicious!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
"Why would you do that?" What does this sentence mean? I often hear this sentence but I am not sure what it means.
doing some more research would have been good to find out if pancakes races were tradition or not nationwide....its great to be cute and fluffy in front of the camera but how awesome it would be for you guys if you actually new what you were talking about....take your video making a step further...make it better!!! good luck!

This is soo interesting. I like the concepts of the way u make pancakes over there and stuff a whole bunch of stuff in it. Sad it is only one day though. ☺
Thanks Mike! Yeah wish it was everyday!
Pancakes in the us are thicker.
I wish we had a pancake day. Lol
Lia did you notice yourself you're moving your lips while Joel's talking in lots of your videos lol.i like you guys tho.
hahaha! She does it all the time! So funny!
