  • In this metal detecting hunt, we trace the tracks of the Voortrekkers where they staged their ox-wagons and rested their oxen before attempting the treacherous route up and over the Hottentots Holland Mountain, now known as Sir Lowry's Pass.
The route up the mountain was dangerous, and many ox-wagons rolled back down the mountain. They started disassembling the ox-wagons and then carrying them up part by part up the mountain on the back of oxen. This process took time, and they would gather at the base of the Hottentot Holland Mountains in an area now know as Sir Lowry's Pass. They would spend a few days before going up and coming down the mountain in preparation for their forward trek.
We have scouted an area we believe may have been visited by these early Voortrekkers and my son, Hunter and myself are detecting in this area with the hope of finding some relics from that period.
The first area we detected did not give up many targets, so we moved to a higher-lying area that had a few rocks. Our thinking was that this would have served as a vantage point and look out when hunting and stopping over.
We found three very old cartridges, one of which was nipped closed at the top and filled with what we hoped was gun powder. They would often use this gun powder as fuel to start their fires. Unfortunately, after opening the bullet casing, it was filled with sand and no gun powder.
Our best find was a harmonica reed from that period, which tells us the Voortrekkers did camp in this area.
This is Part 1 of our series, Tracking The Tracks Of The Voortrekkers Up The Hottentots Holland Mountain. We will continue to detect this area in future hunts and record our finds and publish on the MDSA RUclips Channel.

Love seeing SA metal detectorists finding relics. I can just imagine the tales those relics - even the trash - could tell!

Thanks Bobby, yes it’s fascinating to think what the situation was surrounding those targets and how they ended up there. We can just imagine!

Cool video, it's always exciting when a new video of yours pop's up in my suggested to watch list. I know I can use the bell as so many other creators mention repeatedly but eventually it's just another badge on an icon that grows and grows (if used for all my sub'ed channels). Would you be willing to make a vid on the in's and out's of detecting on public vs private land and what the general rule of thumb is? I know there is already content out there about this but I'm interested in more local information. For example if I want to magnet fish a non enclosed body of water is it ok to do so. Obviously if any land is fenced or walled off it's off limits without permission but there are a lot of dams and rivers that are easily accessible but may not be public.
