Whoa! I knew I've developed vertigo with age (which is weird, because I used to climb pretty much anything and everything back in the days), but I didn't know I'd reached "watching heights on videos makes me queazy" levels. That's some confident climbing. Epic castle, and little man's getting so big!
8:52 "Looks a bit dodgy...let's go up!" 😅 Love love the adventuresome spirit, I'm totally the same way and would be clamoring around those beautiful ruins right alongside you!
Good progress with the ignition, but noted some misfiring at the start of this clip. The distributor points gap you mentioned were concave and rounded. Both surfaces need to be filed flat and then the gap needs to be reset to the recommended size (25 thousandths of an inch roughly) when it is at the top of a lobe. The dwell angle of the distributor also needs to be adjusted to the correct advance (roughly 10 degrees before top dead centre). These settings will need to be adjusted inline with the Volvo B30 specs. Also remember the rotor cap inside the distributor also needs to be filed free of any corrosive deposits where the end passes closely to end plug lead contact inside the distributor cap. If you are still having misfire issues after all that, then the condenser (capacitor) is then next most likely cause. As for the fuel issues, yes that pump and return needs to be sorted to ensure the fuel bowl on the carby remains full after shutdown.
Chris, With your continued experience with the B30 and the ongoing support from Tatanka and the Volvo TGB community, you may find that the planned diesel conversion becomes less of a priority. The time you will spend in removing the B30 and installing the Mercedes diesel is time you, Ange and Oakley could spend traveling. Over the years, we have had quite a few European overlanding families with small children staying at our place in NW Oregon. Introducing and instilling the concept of world exploration to young children primes them for an expanded world view far beyond what they learn solely from a classroom. Keep up the great work!
the scenery is just getting better and better guys ,amazing places and portrayed so well in your vids. the volvo is doing you proud Chris even with the engine frustrations. Wow Ange good workouts carrying Oakley around and i see he is taking it all in .stay safe guys .
Another fantastic episode, great photography it is impossible to make bad content with scenery like that !!. When you replace the points, also replace the condenser usually mounted on the outside of the distributor with going to a terminal inside the distributor. The condenser stops the points, becoming burnt up crap one side of the contacts & erosion on the other side of the contacts. It's quite easy to do. When fitting the new points, clean the cam that points run on to open the point, apply a very small amount of grease on the rubbing block to prevent wear causing the gap between the contacts to close more quickly, also gap the points to the upper tolerance. After removing the distributor, it is best to check the inigition timing using a timing light ,this can also be done statically using a test light. Some points come will a protection film added ,remove with a solvent e.g. petrol or similar. Safe travels Chris & Ang.
Concerning the fuelpump other brands that used the Stromberg carburetor tended to use a electric fuelpump so i re-comend not spending any money on the mechanical one and insted by a generic electric one.
The mechanical pump has a rubber diaphragm which can leak petrol into the engine. I suggest using a low pressure electric petrol pump. Easy to install needs only one positive wire from the ignition system, it is activated the moment the ignition is turned on and it will cost approximately 20 Euros.
We are also traveling around Spain roughly where you guys are in our 10ton 4x4 Merc truck and cannot agree more about how nice it is to overland here. People are nice, loads of thumbs up for the truck, easy camping and water/rubbish situation. We are a bit larger than your Volvo but still able to do great offroad routes. Spain is my new favorite destination.
Awesome! Where is your favorite spot so far? We highly recommend Gorafe if you haven't been there yet (next week episode) Thanks for watching and safe travels :)
@TheOutFit Thanks for the tip! I was already having a look at your Alfonso XIII spot as we are slowly going north. If you enjoyed watching spaghetti westerns, the area they used to film those movies is really cool, around the city of Tabernas. There are some cheesy attractions you can ignore and some great trails through Sierra Alhamilla to Sierra Gador. Nothing like watching the sun go down while quoting Clint Eastwood haha. Enjoy the rest of your trip. Love the videos!
A good few years ago now, I did a tour of Spain, Italy and Portugal and Normandy, on a motorbike, so had to travel minimalistic, carrying only my bare essential on the bike, but it was one of those trips you'll never forget, and the people I met along the way were always welcoming, some even feeding me and offering overnight shelter and showers, I'm now 68, and am planning to do that exact same tour, and yes again on a motorbike again, though this time a more comfortable model, than the 80s tourer I used back the first time out, I have been watching your trip from day one, and making notes of the great places you have found, and may visit them myself, keep the videos coming guys, some of the best content from those that do this kind of thing
Once again Guys , absolutely stunning videos . I’m guessing you’ll visit Ronda soon , it was one of our favourite parts of Spain 🤔 I’m intrigued to see how you show it off if it’s on your itinerary. Keep up your wonderful work ! S
A little trick that I use for washing clothes is to put it in a 20L bucket with a close fitting lid or one of those dry bags which is very similar to what you used, put some water and detergent but as you fold it up leave as much air as you can in it and just hang it/put it out of the way toward the rear of the vehicle. As your touring the dirt tracks there is usually enough movement in the back to agitate your clothes, then all you have to do is rinse and hang them to dry at the end of the trip. Also guys Spain has much more history than castles, If you ever get a chance to visit Antequera in Malaga, the is a prehistoric Dolmen there made from huge slabs from the Neolithic era, and in another town called Ronda, you not only have el Tajo de Ronda, but if you search the really old section you'll find the Roman baths and steps down in the bottom section and the Islamic baths and steps a bit further up. It's like a timeline in architecture as you walk up the street. Also in La Serrania de Ronda somewhere is a pre-historic cave hidden somewhere with paintings and the like which is really cool but I don't remember where. I do remember there was a bush hiding its entrance though, and as you go through it opens up to a huge cavern with caves and the like running from there. There was what looked like a big stone throne which if I remember correctly might have been tied in with "La Dama de Elche", also be mindful that at the end of one of the caves there is a really deep pit. Spain has so much history even in less touristy smaller to medium towns, that its not funny. This sounds like it might be the site for the caves: www.rondatoday.com/pileta-paleolithic-cave-paintings-at-benaojan/
Thanks again for an awsome video. Fun to see you being close to my holiday house. Spain from an overlanding perspective looks great. Going down there with my overland rig next time👌
Spain looks spectacular, even more so with each episode. Oakley does not look that comfy sleeping in the back pack! BTW 60 Euros per night is what many coastal caravan parks in Australia are asking during the January school holidays.
We mentioned it in a previous episode, it's an expensive upgrade around 500/600 euros. We would prefer avoiding spending too much money on this engine before the diesel swap.
The Alfonso XIII Reservoir, also the Quípar Reservoir, is a reservoir located in the lower reaches of the Quípar River, a tributary of the Segura. It is located in the Spanish municipality of Calasparra, in the Murcia region, a few kilometers from the border between the mentioned term and Cieza, in the narrow area called "Los Almadenes del Quípar", and a scant kilometer from the mouth of the river itself in Segura. 1 Built in 1915, its primary mission is to provide streams for irrigation and prevent the arrival of floods from Quípar to the Segura River.
I have a TGB 11 and I wish I had done something similar to what you guys are doing, so now me and a friend have decided to take the TGB to Iceland this summer for adventure and catch up a bit… so nice to see the building of your car and follow your journey 👍😊
Nice one guys, again great views and photography, love how Ok's just needs to sit and enjoy the views on the hikes. Ang' if you fold the windscreen wipers out you could run a washing line from one wing mirror arms round the front end of the wiper arms to the other wing mirror arm and then your washing will hang free away from the bodywork. Twas a bit rsky tho' of you Chris walking on the edges of the caved in floors, as it might not take much for more to break away. Stay and drive safe guys 🤗
You will soon be in an area where I have lived for 10 years! 15 minutes from Guadalest. Injection...no pumping of gas pedal...carburettor..a few pumps before starting.
I have now seen more of Your videos and build is great. As you are going to drive many kilometers with this motor bite the bullet and get pointles system on distributor. 123 seems awesome as you can adjust it electronicly but I think I found some cheaper ones which only replace the points. I think You have not driven with carb car in cold and humid climate, humidity will freese in carb throte while driving because of the vacuum even up to 10c so you need working preheating there. I have seen it under 10km test drive in very humid weather at 4-8C. Car stopped in halfway and while melted carb was again covered in ice inside when I was home and opened turbo pipes. Check also oil level in carbs under that black cap on top, it leaks from there and I think piston moves too fast after that and you get lean or rich mixture. You are now at boating country buy see through boat fuel filter so you can drain water out if you get condensation in tank or bad fuel. You don't have electric solenoids or carbon cans as in fuel injected cars so some condensatin will get to the tank eventually. In my country Finland we had to use alcohol in tank to melt water from bottom at least in metal tanks and carb motors.
Ps. Fearless exploring on castle walls! I have one more story on electric pointless spark. My first carbed turbo project had Lucas pointless conversion and too small fuel return line and high pressure pump, engine was still running even when it was so much over fueling that pencil thick gas stream shoot out from carb when I took pressure pipe out between turbo pressure side and carb.
I have watched 99% of your build. I saw you doing the white on the rims but somehow missed the reason why you only did it on the left. Please can you tell me why?
Thank you ❤❤❤ Watching Oaks in your amazing new hike pack, 🤔 what if Pupa fashioned some feet rest’ Potential stand vs sit positions ( extra wide moto pegs?? ) Vision amazing! 🎥
hello, Thanks for the nices vues ! ok, the gasoline goes back to the tank when Volvo is stopped with the cold, there may be an air inlet, have you tightened the clamps on the hoses? fred
probably you're already away, but very close to the north of Pantano Alfonso XIII there's a canyon where you can find cave paintings and a little more to the north el Tolmo de Minateda a nice roman town from 400 BC. If your points are pitting, is there a condenser that also needs replaced? I used to play with cars in the 70s and the condenser (a small barrel shaped electrical components sitting inside the rotor cap attached to the body of the distributor). Does your beast have such a thing?
OMG that castle was dodgy! Any of those walls could come crashing down at any time when you walk on them. Or they could still stand another few hundred years. There is no way of knowing.
Spectacular scenery!
I am scared of height’s, just watching Chris on top of castle gave me a funny feeling in the of my stomach 😮

A real pleasure to watch this video and I particularly liked the voiceover 😊

IIRC the condenser was fairly unreliable in itself on these older machines. Good luck. These trails look amazing.
@@richardanderson9340 Hopefully it will make a big difference once I sort that distributor out 🤞

We definitely will! Any recommendations? :)
@ Algarve you have many places to visit, from the mountains monchique to beautiful beaches in Sagres, and don’t miss benagil cave.
It seems like a great product when doing camping without a sink but when you have a sink why not just wash there? :)
The sink is usually a little bit dirty and I like to use the internal washboard to properly rub and remove dirt/light stains.
