    Storytime with Richard:
    I come from a long long line of gardeners. Almost every member of my family has maintained or are maintaining a garden. Because of this, we share plants all the time. So, it has become a tradition in my family to pass African violets from one generation to the next.
    What makes it extra cool is that every single violet that my family owns comes from one plant that came into my family 73 years ago. The first owner was my great grandmother, who was a domestic worker during the Apartheid era here in South Africa. She stole a plant when the white family that she worked for reported her to the police for not having a pass book (pass books were basically hall-passes for black people to work/be in whites only areas). So, to honor her and the family she worked so hard to raise, we keep this tradition going. I hope to do so with my family.
    If you think about it; we are a family, and so are our plants :)

    African violets are so cuddly. You can feel on their fuzziness, and they sit happily on most windowsills and stay compact enough to be there forever.

    I propagated a bunch of my AV leaves when my cat knocked it out of the window and busted a bunch of stems. I stuck them straight in soil with the leaves standing straight up. Each leaf can produce 2-3 babies and the growth will occur on each side of the leaf. Sometimes I’d remove the babies and the parent leaf would still have roots, so I stuck them back in dirt so they could grow more babies. Unfortunately, I’ve run out of friends to give them to. Haha 😂

    Not getting leaves wet is a myth: the rot problem is caused by a wet crown. Dab off excess moisture from the center of the plant. If you are not using distilled, dab off moisture from the leaves to prevent mineral spotting as it dries. There are numerous videos of growers washing their plants in a sink (warm, not cold water) to remove dust from their fuzzy leaves. I recently did this (with some fear) and it turned out just fine. Of course, this should not be overdone, as with any care technique.
    I love my $1 African Violet. Still have it. Great way to learn about their care before moving on to the more expensive variegated ones.

    I've propagated African Violets from leaf cuttings in potting mix for years. I just break off a leaf and stick it in the mix with great results. I've only recently read about rooting in water so I'm curious to see how yours works. My late Auntie swore by growing them in North facing windows and she had dozens of them. I tend to follow her directions - but also grow some in South facing windows and under grow lights. Thank you so much for doing this video! It's nice to see someone else growing these beauties❣️

I have a few tropicals that I own that are thriving on a sunny patio this summer (July 23, '22). One of my friends gave me an African violet to take care of an repot for her. I'm using your gardern expertise to guide me through care of one of these. I'm not surprized they're not a direct sun plant, given their origins in the rainforests of French Polynesia, or am I thinking of another plant? Anyway, thanks for the informative video and happy growing! 🪴

    I've learned about their care from Rick L African Violets channel on you tube years ago. I have quite a few and use Jack's water soluble 20/20/20 fertilizer at half strength "every time" I water. They live in a northeast window and I have never ending blooms. I propagate my leaves in a soiless mixture. Haven't ever tried the water propagation. Anxious to see your follow up results. Nice video. Btw...I live in sunny🌞Arizona so maybe that attributes to healthy growing in a northeast window.

    Do you ever wonder how African violets survived in nature? What did they do when it rained on them. They couldn’t live under the canopy of a plant because they need bright light to flower. I don’t expect you to answer me Erika, it is just a random thought.💚🙃

    • @bkrbkrl
      @bkrbkrl 4 года назад +3

      There are videos of growers washing their leaves: the no water on the leaves thing is a myth. It is the crown that rots, so simply dabbing off excess water from the crown should prevent that.
      I was told that in nature, there are changing temps and breezes that speed evaporation in their natural state of growing. Air/environmental conditions in a home are stagnant. This is why rain does not give them crown rot in the wild.

It’s been watered, I keep in sunny areas, I’ve also aerated the soil though i don’t know if that’s what AV’s like since I’ve only really seen it done on other plants. This is my first flowering plant that I’m taking care of on my own and so it worries me a little.

    • @tomjones2157
      @tomjones2157 2 года назад

      Yes it works well in water, but its slower to get plants to mature flowering stage. I've seen people say their water rooted leaves take 1 year to flower compared to 5 - 6 months for their soil rooted leaves. Water rooted leaves slow down and need a lot of time to adjust when transplanted into soil compared to plants grown in soil from the start. Also when you remove rooted leaves from water the roots tend to clump together so it takes ages for them to regrow and spread out properly into soil. A leaf rooted in soil has already spread out properly so grows better over time.

    Erika, you are sweet lady but need some coaching to handle Video production . You talk too much, this video could be made in half the period. Take care.
