Long time Quo fan here. I was in the crowd that the pic on the sleeve of 12 Gold Bars was taken. I will always say that between Dog Of Two Head and Quo Live - that run of albums between 1972 and 1977 - they were one of the best, most consistent bands on the Planet.
WELL, DOG OF TWO HEAD WAS FROM 1971, NOT 1972. YOU LEFT OUT MA KELLY'S GREASY SPOON IN 1970, THANK YOU JOHN SCHROEDER. THEN QUO HAD THE AUDACITY TO PRODUCE 2 OF THE BEST DISCO ALBUMS IN 1977 AND 1978. QUO WERE JUST TRYING TO ' STAY ALIVE ' AMONGST THE ' ANARCHY IN THE UK ' THEY WERE FEELING ' PRETTY VACANT ' AND WERE ASKING THEIR QUO FANS ' HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE? ' WHICH MEANS THAT AT THE HEIGHT OF PUNK & DISCO IN 1977/78 A COCAINE RIDDLED ROSSI DECIDED TO GO BEHIND OTHER MEMBERS' BACKS AND HIRE PIP WILLIAMS, WHICH PLANTED THE SEEDS OF THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF THE QUO WE LOVED. YES, I KNOW THEY PRODUCED 3 MORE AWESOME ALBUMS IN '79 '80 AND '81 ONLY TO THEN PRODUCE 2 OF THE STRANGEST ALBUMS IN '82 AND '83. I DON'T THINK THAT ANY ARTIST HAS RELEASED 16 CONSECUTIVE ALBUMS, WELL, ONLY THE QUO DID. FROM 1968 TO 1983, IS 16 YEARS INCLUSIVELY, YOU CAN COUNT THEM ON YOUR FINGERS. The ANTI-QUO WITH HIS WHITE SOX RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS ROCK CREDENTIALS. RIP ALAN & RICK AND THANX FOR THE HARD ROCKIN' ' QUO ' ALBUM IN 1974. WE NEEDED MORE OF THAT AND NONE OF THE REPULSIVE 'MARGUERITA TIME ' YUCK!!
I have to do this: Is there anyone out there who wants to Rock Is there anyone out there who wants to Roll And is there anyone out there who wants to Boogie Tonight… live at the Apollo Glasgow, we have the No1 Rock N Roll band in the land Will you welcome the magnificent…..Status Quoooooooooo! Jackie Lyntons intro to the greatest live album ever, even though Francis hates it because it warts and all, no overdubs. But that what’s great about it, it’s so raw you can slmost see the sweat drip off the turntable
That's right Stephen, Rossi has said that he doesn't like The 'LIVE' album. Rossi likes a lot of the crap things about QUO, mainly the Post- Lancaster / Coghlan QUO. Rossi is a hard one to work out. First of all, why does he wear white socks??? Men's socks are supposed to blend in and compliment the colours of the clothes. His body language and face touching in interviews, brings his sincerity into question. I've named him THE ANTI-QUO, because he is against a lot of great things about his own Band.
Fun show, thanks! Absolutely love this band - since 1976 when I was ten years old... My Top10: 10) If You Can't Stand the Heat... 09) Rockin' All Over the World 09) Whatever You want 08) Blue for You 07) Never Too Late 06) Dog of Two Head 05) Piledriver 04) My Kelly's Greasy Spoon 03) Hello 02) Quo 01) On the Level And of course that brilliant "Live" double. The greatest hardrock'n'roll/boogie band in the world IMO. Rick Parfitt was one of those magical rhythm guitar players!
1) Hello! 2) Piledriver 3) Quo 4) On the Level 5) Rockin’ All Over the World 6) Just Supposin’ 7) Dog of Two Head 8) Whatever You Want 9) If You Can’t Stand the Heat 10) Blue for You 11) Heavy Traffic 12) In Search of the Fourth Chord 13) Never Too Late 14) Ma Kelly’s Greasy Spoon 15) The Party Ain’t Over Yet 16) Quid Pro Quo 17) Backbone 18) Rock ‘til You Drop 19) Picturesque Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo 20) Spare Parts 21) Thirsty Work 22) In the Army Now 23) Perfect Remedy 24) Back to Back 25) Bula Quo! 26) Under the Influence 27) 1982 28) Ain’t Complaining not included all the cover albums in this
Seeing the Frantic Four live reflects what was said here. I never thought I'd be able to see them in this line-up. Saw them twice on those tours and it was phenomenal. For many a band that bridged the gap between rock and metal and a influence on me in that way in those formative years of finding my way in music. Legendary band.
Status Quo was pretty big all over Europe, not only in the UK. "Whatever you want" was a massive hit everywhere....with the exception of the USA. Love all their albums from "Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon" (1970) to "Never Too Late" (1981). "Under The Influence" (1999) and "Heavy Traffic" (2002) were a great return to form. And what a great live band! Saw the original line-up back in 81. One of the best shows I've ever seen!
Fabulous as ever gents. My first live concert. Bournemouth 1974. I was 11. I remember it being really loud and I remember the smell: dope and patchouli oil. Great live band back then.
Quo are often subject to ridicule here in the UK but from 72 to 77 ( piledriver to the live album) they had an amazing run…. Half dozen consecutive albums that were all very good. Saw them support Skynryd in Birmingham in 2019.
Here's my ten favourites.. 1 Piledriver 2 Blue For You 3 Hello 4 Quo 5 Whatever You Want 6 Dog Of Two Head 7 Just Supposin 8 Under The Infuence 9 On The Level 10 Heavy Traffic
Not that big or known about in the US but huge in the UK and Europe and Australia. Great band and had so many songs that reached the higher parts of the charts and with their Albums and Great live shows especially in the 70s and 80s. Imagine how much bigger they would've been if the US had got on board!!
My God ! Steven Reid, he REALLY knows what he' s talking about, lots of knowledge of Quo ! And I agree with him, Just Supposin' also a great record. Great show guys, I' ve been a Quo fan since i was 11 years old (50 years old now) and still listenig to them, I NEVER get tired of the albums from 1971 until the Quo Live album !
Great show! Quo were the first rock band I REALLY got into as a kid as well... My top 5 would probably look something like this: 1) Quo (by far their best, I think) 2) Blue For You 3) Dog Of Two Head 4) Piledriver 5) Just Supposin' I also have a real soft spot for Back To Back because that was one of the first two Quo records I got (bought it together with "Whatever You Want").
Heard of them, but never took the plunge. Such is the enthusiasm and wit, and love displayed for them here, that I'm intrigued enough to have a butcher's.
Brilliant show. One of the best live bands I've seen (Frantic Four). Rick Parfitt is one of my favourite guitar players ever.. From Dog of two Head through to Never Too Late are the albums I listen to the most. Quo Live is one of the great live albums and yes it's my #1 album of theirs. 1: QUO 2: Piledriver 3: Hello! 4: On The Level 5: Blue for You 6: Dog of Two Head 7: Whatever You Want 8: Just Supposin 09: Never Too Late 10: Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon
I knew right when I saw the panel I knew I was going to have to break down viewing the entire segment in 3 installments due to time restraints. Just finished part 3 and well worth it....just got into SQ in the last year and still much to find going forward....thank boys👍
Saved this show to watch in leisure on a blustery (for north Florida) Friday. Typical American here, don't know enough about all the albums of this band to rank any albums but after this show, now know some good entry points. The pleasure of these shows is not only the knowledge of this trio, but the fun, wit, and general humorous tone of their interaction with and reaction to one another. And all the while displaying an excellent depth, and certainly in this instance, width, of knowledge about such an extensive catalogue. The added pleasure is knowing that you three will return with your review of the not-so-good albums of the same band and looking forward to that with great anticipation. Also appreciate you mentioning the live album as the potential 'true' top album. That provides the starting point. Thanks to Simon, Steven and Pete or spending so much time on these shows. They are great to watch watch and also fun to rewatch since there always seems to be something missed on the first viewing. Thanks, gents, and cheers!
Thanks John, your support is always appreciated. It's GREAT fun talking music (and more) with Peter and Simon but I have to admit that this was one of my favourites to prep for. The follow up should be interesting!
Hi Pete I really enjoyed your Status Quo top ten countdown. With your two Co hosts from here in Good Old Blity, had too laugh!! Your camar camaraderie was excellent it was really fun and entertaining. Throughly entertaining and very informative as aswell. I totally agree with your Co hosts that Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan were the backroom engine of the band without doubt!!
"On the Level" is the first QUo album I got...My Dad bought it for me (alongside Queen's Sheer Heart Attack) when I was 5 years old! A lifetime of good memories! Imagine my bound with those albums....Cheers.
Quo's finest moment is in my view Quo Live, but since we're talking only studio albums, my favourites are. 1 Hello 2 Blue For You 3 Quo 4 Whatever You Want 5 Piledriver 6 On The Level 7 Heavy Traffic 8 Dog of Two Head 9 In Search of The 4th Chord 10 Quid Pro Quo.
When I saw you were doing this I was pleased that the two fellows that were co-captains are massive fans from the UK where the Quo were massive. My 4 years older sister used to annoy the hell out of me by playing all the albums up 'til 1979 as that was the year she moved out. I didn't own any Status Quo records but have now ordered the first 3 (more when I've digested them) thanks to Pete, Simon and Steven who did a wonderful job ranking them. There has been lots of S.O.T. shows that have inspired me to spend money on cd's and dvd's and I don't regret one penny. Thank you Pete for doing such a brilliant job.
Quo were the bridge for me as a 15 year in 1978 from the glam of Sweet and Slade to Thin Lizzy AC/DC NWOBHM. From the singles Caroline , Down Down. I bought the Live album still their best album and OnThe Level.. Then as I started listening to AC/DC etc and they released Rocking all over the world , Accident prone I lost interest in them. That said over the years I’ve appreciated their classic line up releases more and now own the classic albums. When you asked of an American band similar profile I immediately though REO Speedwagon though they have a couple of hits in the UK.Not really Skynyrd as I last saw them at the Glasgow Hydro in 2019 and everyone knows at least 2 Skynyrd songs. Ironically Quo supported Skynyrd that night. The later stuff I haven’t heard much I should try some but bits of them I have heard Rossi alway sound a bit Chas and Dave to me.
Fantastic show. One of mt all time fav bands. All the ones that got are fantastic but my number 1 is always on the level. My parents bought this when it was released. Contains the longer version of down down, was released here in Australia originally as get down. Love heavy traffic i saw that tour it was fantastic. In the 70s quo toured Australia 7 times , twice in 73 and didn't return to Australia until 1998. You guys also mentioned the levi promo that they did for blue for you, which they never got any royalties for. Inside the gatefold cover of on the level there is a photo of rick parfitt hand which he has has a split webbing cut to his thumb and first finger, which resulted in cancelation of there south Australian show in 73, i think it was the 2nd 73 Australian tour that this happened. Looking forward to the next show and yes there some awful quo albums and unfortunately i own all of them. Also Francis Rossi hates the quo live 77 lp. I read this in classic rock Magazine. Check out Status Quid (the heebeegeebees) song boring song funny as even Francis and rick liked it.
This was my Top Ten From my ranking show 10 Dog Of Two Head 9 Quid Pro Quo 8 Never Too Late 7 On The Level 6 Just Supposin 5 Blue For You 4 Piledriver 3 Whatever You Want 2 Hello 1 Quo
Fascinating. Quo were in 50% of UK teenage boys' top 10 fave bands back in the seventies. I have no idea who listened to them after that. Certainly not me. You'll deal with what went wrong in more detail in episode 2. The best albums were from Piledriver to Live! Arrange those six in whatever order you like. (Best track is Forty Five Hundred Times but that goes without saying) Finally, Tangerine Dream (and Peter Hammill and no doubt many other solo artists) have more than 33 albums but it depends which ones you count to know which is no. 33
Frank Zappa also comes to mind when talking about artists/bands with more than 33 albums. At the time of his death I think Zappa had at least 50 albums out and a lot more have come out since his death. Nobody will top Buckethead though. He's released, recorded and/or played on something around 400 albums as crazy as it sounds. That's an insane output.
Another great episode with the UK Connection Simon & Steven! as a youngster I only had Quo Live (still have my original vinyl) and Rocking All Over The World and about a couple of months ago picked up a 3 disc compilation The Definitive Hits, and this ranking episode is making me want to check out the actual albums, especially the late 70's early 80's albums. Run To Mummy, I'm Sold! Can't go wrong with a Kerry King reference! lol!!!
Loved this episode, thanks gents. Quo were my gateway to rock and then metal. They even beat Kiss for the number of final tours . I saw their supposed final ever show, in Milton Keynes in 1984, and they’re still effing going today
Interestingly enough, Quo sometimes got lumped in there with the metal bands for a while in the late '70s/early '80s, their hardcore fans were definitely the denim (sometimes leather) male crowd. Magazines like Kerrang! I remember would feature them quite a bit and in Germany they'd guest the more hard rocking TV shows like Beat Club, Szene and RockPop in Concert the latter 1982 live show also featured Jethro Tull, Joan Jett, ZZ Top and Saxon that year, all these gigs are on RUclips.
1. Quo 2. Blue for you 3. Ma Kellys Greasy Spoon 4. Hello 5. Piledriver 6. On The Level 7. Rockin all over the world 8. Dog of two head 9. Whatever you want 10. If You Cant Stand the Heat
great show very entertaining, im a massive quo fan i have everything they have have put out and more on cd and 30 plus vinyl lps, so great hear your picks, like you my favourite would change every day but top 3 are quo, ma kellys and just supposin, but your right heavy traffic is an awesome album and live wow best live album ever, i also have their bbc transcription live album on vinyl from 73 and that rocks, looking forward to part two
As always, great show, thank you Pete, Steven and Simon. Being a non-Brit (worse than that: a French!?!) born in the 80s, all i knew of Quo is THAT song. I'll go and listen to these albums you mentioned; so far I had a first try at 'Just Supposin' (great!) and 'Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon' (meh). But more listening to come. Again, thank you - at least for the best one-and-half-hour of the week
Yes - Never Too Late definitely underrated! Personally I'd place it as my #3 fave Quo disc. One of the band's heaviest albums overall and the songs from front-to-back are top notch.
Great summary. A 'worst of' has to focus on the lazy covers albums, Don't Stop and Famous in the Last Century. I have a soft spot for Under The Influence, and to be fair they are rarely unlistenable. I saw the Frantic Four twice on the reunion tours and they were incredible. Last time I saw them they were surprisingly energetic without Parfitt, as well. Good on them.
I loved this discussion. I only have 4 Status Quo albums Hello, Quo, Live and other later live album. This has inspired me to get more Quo for this Christmas. I have a vivid memory buying the Quo album as a kid in 1974 in St. Ives England.
I think I saw Quo more than any other band in my teens in the early 80's. The final time was at Crystal Palace on their farewell tour in 1985. While they weren't the most musically talented band, I still think they were the most fun band I've ever seen and I guess that's why I kept going back to see them. I did see Rossi with his latest incarnation in Hyde Park a few years' back but, regretably, they were awful. With the passing of Alan and Rick, we'll never get those days back again, so thank you for bringing back so many great memories and I've spent the afternoon listening along to albums I haven't listened to in years, maybe decades!
Excellent topic. I used to enjoy catching their Christmas tour every year, so much so that Quo used to send a Christmas card ! Always put on a highly enjoyable show, Rossi is an unrecognised excellent guitarist...........
This is such a great ranking show. Wonderfully funny & so great to hear the mighty Quo getting a shout out on SOT. I could watch you guys talk Quo all day, fantastic guys 👏 more please 😆
Always liked mid period Quo. What Ever You Want, Just Supposin and Never Too Late. On my walkman while walking to school Riverside and Paper Plane are my favourite Quo tracks
Loved the band in the 70s. They went downhill at a rapid rate of knots once Lancaster and Coughlan weren't in the line up. Was lucky to catch them live twice, both in Cardiff, Wales, UK. The first time was July '76 when they topped a bill over Budgie, Curved Air, Hawkwind and the Strawbs, at a great outdoor gig at Cardiff Castle. The 2nd time was a year later at Cardiff Capitol Theatre
Growing up in the UK in the 70s, IMO Quo was one of the best rock single bands. Along with Queen & Lizzy. So 12 Gold Bars is definitely my favourite album. Top 10 albums: 1. If you can’t stand the heat 2. Whatever you want 3. Rocking’ All Over The World 4. Hello 5. Blue for You 6. On the Level 7. Piledriver 8. Just Supposin’ 9. Quid Pro Quo 10.Dog of 2 Heads
The Doors may not be everybody's choice, but let's not forget that when they heard Roadhouse Blues being played in a bar somewhere, it was almost a turning point for the band. They grabbed it, made it their own and used the shuffle and gritty, heads down attitude and sound of it of it as a basis for the Quo trademark onwards. Same really with Bye Bye Johnny. It's virtually closed every Quo set since 72 onwards. Aas with the Doors, you can't ignore the influence of Chuck Berry on the band.
Great show, guys I own fifteen of the albums the first two of which were the 60s recordings. I'd possibly put the debut at the top followed by Dog Of Two Head and Piledriver. I'm actually quite fond of In The Army Now but like Back To Back and Backbone a lot more.
My Top 5 Quo albums: 1. On the Level 2. Hello 3. Quo 4. Piledriver 5. Blue for You HM to: Dog of Two Head/ Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon/ Just Suppossin'/ Whatever You Want/ Heavy Traffic.
I've read Rossi's biography that when they toured the US opening up for bands like Aerosmith, KISS, Blue Oyster Cult, ZZ Top and many others, people actually went up to them and said they're best band they've seen in a long time. I'm surprised they weren't that huge in the States (apart from Pictures of Matchstick Men)
Very interesting video. I am from Sweden and Status was very big over here. I was never into their music much, but try to catch up now. Heavy Traffic is an awesome album!!
Quo/Hello/Blue for You/On the Level - all no 1 picks for the Quo. Quo Live absoutely their greatest moment even though it has Roadhouse Blues on it as well it has a fantastic version of 45 hundred times. That was my first Quo album followed by 12 Gold Bars - if you've never heard any Quo either of those 2 are a great place to start. Back in the day I'll admit I was a bit of a musical snob thinking the Quo just stuck to the three chords however on getting all the albums mentioned in this it is clearl evident that they were far greater than some painted them out to be back in the day.
It’s always the heads down no nonsense mindless boogie era for me and the live album will never be bettered. It does have the best intro to a band ever! Studio wise: Quo Hello Blue For You Just Supposin Never Too Late On the Level Piledriver Rocking All Over The World Fresh Quota a10” mini album with some rare stuff From the Makers of… ok it’s a compilation but a great intro to the band. Besides the hits, it has a good selection of lesser known track back to 1968 and a live disc as well
Wow, I haven't listened to Fresh Quota for YEARS. The first 10" I ever owned. And From The Makers Of is a stunning compilation. Never have found a version in the tin but by box is still very cool! I think the live disc is a show from the NEC and it's fantastic.
@@TranquilityFireReid Yeah the live stuff on FTMO is really good and the newer songs at the time hold up well, especially Over The Edge. Afraid I don’t own Fresh Quota any more but love Good Thinking Batman. Wish I still had that one.
Close to mine ! 1) Quo 2) Hello 3) Dog of two head 4) Piledriver 5) Blue for you 6) Whatever you want 7) On the level 8) Ma Kellys greasy spoon 9)Rocking all over the World 10) Just Supposin My top 10, nothing post 1980 , Never too late was the worst of Just Supposin , even before Lancaster left still not at that pre 80 level, but when he and Coghlan left wow it really was Quo karaoke, Bula Quo, Margarita Time, Burning bridges !
@@mikewest1542 agree with the later stuff which I call Granny rock. I liked Never Too Late though. Never put the early albums in as I have never really listened to then. I start at Piledriver
Amazing number of comments on this video. If I had to pick a favourite studio album it would be Dog of Two Head for variety, but that run of albums up to and including the live album are all special. After Alan Lancaster (RIP) left I still enjoy The Search for the fourth chord album.A great show and I am looking forward to the next part.
Nice piece, well done chaps. I'm another to whom the Frantic Four tours were great (rating in my top 10 live shows) and unexpected as John Coghlan had left by the time I was old enough to see them live. For me it's 1. Never too late 2. Just supposin' and, now you mention it, 3. Quo. I was always an Alan Lancaster fan and once he left I showed my disgust with the softening of the sound by also switching off and moving on to the like of Maiden. Oddly I never rated the Live! album, to be from a 1980/81 perspective it was really old hat.
@@TranquilityFireReid Yea Steven. Was a beautiful day in Cardiff and a great gig. Quick story. Saw Sonja Kristina from Curved Air at High Voltage 2011. Reminded her about that gig. She signed my wage slip which was the only bit of paper I had. Still got it
First album I bought was Hello on the strength of Caroline as a single. For me Softer Ride is a compilation of all the perfect quo pieces in one song. Ranking: Hello, Quo, Piledriver, on the level, Dog of two heads, ma Kelly’s greasy spoon - the rest for me fall int9 the also rans. Looking forward to the ‘not so good’ albums.
Yeh, Quo for me is Ma Kelly's, to Blue For You, end of story sadly. You will never beat Piledriver! I felt sad for John and Alan when they left. The heart of the band was gone... 😢
Hi there guys, loved listening to you all again, a very entertaining hour and a bit at work (although I got one or two funny looks when I laughed out loud at one point -Kevin DuBrowski's fault...) Saw them in Aberdeen on that 'farewell' 25th Anniversary tour, awesome night...Also, a big hello to Phil, best man at my wedding, the biggest Quo fan I've ever met, and a fellow S of T fan. Can't wait for the (bell) bottom 10 episode...
I heard Lars Ulrich say when he was a kid in Denmark, it was Purple, Sabbath, Heep and Quo. Zeppelin were barely on his radar. Funny how things are different in the world. I’m an American and am finding this episode fascinating.
78 - Welcome to the world of THE QUO. We love it when Americans and Canadians discover QUO via You Tube. Most of you are shocked and surprised that you've never heard QUO until You Tube. I love the superlatives and adjectives you use to describe The Best and Greatest Rock Band of all time. In relation to your Lars Ulrich comment, Lars actually wrote in a book called "The Most Popular British Band of all Time, STATUS QUO", it was either The Foreword or the section in the back of the book. Lars said that his Father took him to see STATUS QUO in the 70's, when he was 14 yrs old, in Denmark.it must've been 1977. Of course, Lars has nothing but great words to describe his QUO experience. He loves THE QUO!!!!!
1. On the Level 2. Hello 3 If You can’t stand the heat 4. Piledriver 5. Blue for you 6. Dog of Two Head 7. Heavy Traffic 8. Under the influence 9. Just supposin 10. What ever you want
Great show chaps - lovely content, conversations, recollections and reveals during the show (thumbnails and so on...). Totally agree about the greasy spoon cover being reminiscent of Saturday night, Sunday morning. The Quo always had that working class vibe along with bands like Maiden. I was never that into Quo as a 1980s child/ teen. In the UK rock scene they were considered very uncool / dad rock / boring and just rehashing the same song 10303823 times. They were lovely people, always came across well in interviews and on UK TV but yeah - for me, I was into Rush, Maiden, Sabbath, Hawkwind and classic rock which excited me. But they just didn't move mountains for me...
I‘m a Longtime Fan since the early 80‘s and Love the Albums from Dog of two Head 1971 until their 1982 Album 1+2+8+2 ! The Live 1977 Album would Win. So I vote only the Studio Albums ! My Today‘s Vote : 1. If you can‘t Stand the Heat 1978 2. Just Supposin‘ 1980 3. Blue for You 1976 4. Quo 1974 5. Piledriver 1972 6. Never too Late 1981 7. Dog of two Head 1971 8. 1+2+8+2 1982 9. Whatever you Want 1979 10. On the Level 1975 My Top Ten ! Albums 2 - 9 are very close Together. They have so many Great Albums between this Time !
The Greatest live band of all time never mind Zep, Sabbath, The Who, Stones etc. ACDC are remembered for producing the same Album over and over again. 4500 times is one of the best driving tunes put down on Vinyl. God bless the mighty QUO. All bands with longevity go shit including the bands i have mentioned!!!!
Brilliant show, best I've seen on SoT recently. Love Steven & Simon, even if Simon especially, has revealed his dodgy music taste - hates the Doors & psychedelia and owns no Hawkwind? Pah! I'll rank 'em: Hello Quo On The Level Piledriver Rocking All Over Blue For You Dog Of Two Heed Whatever You Want Ma Kelly If You Can't Stand The Heat
My dad Mick Green co wrote Big Man on 1982 with Alan Lancaster and also You Don’t Own Me from Rockin All Over The World. And his band Shanghai supported Status Quo on their Blue for You tour
QUO were such a big band and influence on me in my early teens , i guess they came after my T Rex/Glam period..i remember buying the cassettes and pestering my dad to play them on his car cassette player...great memories and still love the early albums now..✌
unknowingly, when I tried to listen to status quo I only tried the psychedelic albums - why would I not start at the beginning :) - I checked out Blue For You after this show and it was really great! thanks for making me give them another try
This is funny, and great show. My top Status Quo: 1 = On The Level, 2 = Blue For You, 3 = Whatever You Want, 4 = In Search Of The Fourth Chord, 5 = Hello!.
For me all their albums from 1968 to 1976 were great especially "Hello!", "Dog of Two Heads" and "Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon" which I consider their best albums. After "Blue for You" it was a slow downhill slide (IMHO) especially the 1980s onwards (Spew quality music). PS: They were also big in Australia! :)
The run of albums from Ma Kellys through to Quo Live was phenomenal. I can't think of any band that produced consistently blistering records of their calibre, year in year out. For me, I simply adore every single track. I skip nothing. I have no favourite one over the over. I just think each album is remarkable. Even the latter day trio of Want, Supposin and Never Too Late are fantastic records - they are just a bit more commercial that's all but superb song writing and arrangements. Not much to write about after John left and certainly not since Alan was outsted. But hey, 71 to 81 - what a decade for Quo and rock in general.
The lyrics of "Down The Dustpipe" but even more on "In My Chair" are at the top of my favourite Quo 45 rpm (7") singles. Fortunately they are part of the extended version of My Kelly's Greasy Spoon.
Whatever You Want Just Supposin' If You Can't Stand the Heat Rockin' All Over the World Hello Piledriver Never Too Late Blue for You On the Level Back to Back
Quo is almost the perfect quo album, one reason is Rossis lack of songwriting, not of course that is a good thing but he Lancaster/Parfitt songs are really heavy and they are really letting go, the only song that doesn’t fit is Fine, Fine, Fine written of course by Rossi with Young I believe!
Agree Mike. " Fine, Fine, Fine " is passable as a Country Rock song. The lyrics are quite comical. Rossi says " All the women there were such a crying shame " " Dirty Water " is an awesome Country Rock song. " Where I Am " from On The Level verges on Country ballad style. " Who Asked You " from " Whatever You Want " written wholly by Lancaster has a huge Country sound to it. There are a few more examples of QUO Country sounds, though are mostly done with taste and class. Mostly, though, with the exception of 'Marguerita Time' which is the ugliest, nastiest, terrible and horrible recording made under the banner of STATUS QUO. There is nothing FINE about 'Marguerita Time' I've got to say that SLOW TRAIN is up high in my Top 10 QUO songs and that ROSSI/YOUNG wrote it. If I know my QUO, then ROSSI would've written the clever lyrics and SIR BOB YOUNG wrote the music. LANCASTER HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVOURITE BAND MEMBER, THEN RICK, THEN JOHN, THEN BOB, THEN ROY, THEN ANDY AND THEN THE ANTI-QUO. ( ROSSI ) ROSSI destroyed the greatest Rock Band of all time and so did PIP WILLIAMS.
Cracking video- thanks lads. You’re all so knowledgeable and insightful. Often discussions of Quo are just ‘everything 70-81 is great/ everything after is terrible’. There are some latter day Quo albums that I think are well worth exploring. For what it’s worth my top 10: Blue for You On the Level Piledriver Hello! Quo Whatever You Want Ma Kelly’s Just Supposin’ Quid Pro Quo Dog of Two Head
Great show, what a laugh. I'm in Glasgow like Steven, and also saw the show they did as part of 4 in 1 day. Think it was around dinner time when it finished. Not a massive fan of the Quo but live it's impossible to resist the boogie. On Quo at the Apollo - it was always said the upper circle moved when they played there, a frightenimg thought. And Steven's "chug means something different in Scotland" - lmao at that one. Brilliant guys.
Long time Quo fan here. I was in the crowd that the pic on the sleeve of 12 Gold Bars was taken. I will always say that between Dog Of Two Head and Quo Live - that run of albums between 1972 and 1977 - they were one of the best, most consistent bands on the Planet.
You even include Ma Kellys greasy spoon !
I agree with every word apart from ''planet''.
@@trevdowson5810 “ In the World “ 😂😂😂
@@mikewest1542 Cheers Mike, now we're all happy.
WHICH MEANS THAT AT THE HEIGHT OF PUNK & DISCO IN 1977/78 A COCAINE RIDDLED ROSSI DECIDED TO GO BEHIND OTHER MEMBERS' BACKS AND HIRE PIP WILLIAMS, WHICH PLANTED THE SEEDS OF THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF THE QUO WE LOVED.
What great fun these review shows with Pete, Simon and Steven are! A true highlight of the channel Pete! Keep them coming.
Thanks Stuart!
Thanks!
One hour 33 mins of pure pleasure , Thanks Pete, Steven and Simon , wonderful!
Thanks Mike.
Thanks Mike!
Great show! When I’m in the mood for Quo, it’s always the live album. Rest in piece to Mr. Landcaster. Good bass player and singer.
I have to do this:
Is there anyone out there who wants to Rock
Is there anyone out there who wants to Roll
And is there anyone out there who wants to Boogie
Tonight… live at the Apollo Glasgow, we have the No1 Rock N Roll band in the land
Will you welcome the magnificent…..Status Quoooooooooo!
Jackie Lyntons intro to the greatest live album ever, even though Francis hates it because it warts and all, no overdubs. But that what’s great about it, it’s so raw you can slmost see the sweat drip off the turntable
LANCASTER
That's right Stephen, Rossi has said that he doesn't like The 'LIVE' album.
Rossi likes a lot of the crap things about QUO, mainly the Post- Lancaster / Coghlan QUO.
Rossi is a hard one to work out.
First of all, why does he wear white socks???
Men's socks are supposed to blend in and compliment the colours of the clothes.
His body language and face touching in interviews, brings his sincerity into question.
I've named him THE ANTI-QUO, because he is against a lot of great things about his own Band.
Introduced to Status Quo in '75. The album "Quo". Still my favorite Album to this day.
It really is an absolute belter, eh!

Popular in Australia as well back in the day.
Quo were great from Piledriver to Blue For You. Quo Live is up there with the best of live albums.
Don't forget Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon and Dog of two heads...
Really appreciating the love for Alan Lancaster boys. R.I.P. Alan & Rick
Here's my ten favourites..
1 Piledriver
2 Blue For You
3 Hello
4 Quo
5 Whatever You Want
6 Dog Of Two Head
7 Just Supposin
8 Under The Infuence
9 On The Level
10 Heavy Traffic
Not that big or known about in the US but huge in the UK and Europe and Australia. Great band and had so many songs that reached the higher parts of the charts and with their Albums and Great live shows especially in the 70s and 80s.
Imagine how much bigger they would've been if the US had got on board!!
They could have done so but got caught up in that fake Fleetwood Mac tour in the late 70’s, along with Slade
Quo played some great gigs in the States mainly as support. Their biggest problem was radio airplay & the lack of top management.
@@markburleyemmerson1373 They should've been big in the States.
Thanks Jaap, very much appreciated! And I completely agree regarding that period from '71 until Live. Such amazing consistency.
Agree Jaap
Great show! Quo were the first rock band I REALLY got into as a kid as well... My top 5 would probably look something like this:
1) Quo (by far their best, I think)
2) Blue For You
3) Dog Of Two Head
4) Piledriver
5) Just Supposin'
I also have a real soft spot for Back To Back because that was one of the first two Quo records I got (bought it together with "Whatever You Want").
Steven is excellent, what great knowledge . 👍
Heard of them, but never took the plunge. Such is the enthusiasm and wit, and love displayed for them here, that I'm intrigued enough to have a butcher's.
Give some of the studio albums (or Quo Live) a go rather than a greatest hits. Hope you like them and thanks for watching!
You'll not be disappointed!
1: QUO
2: Piledriver
3: Hello!
4: On The Level
5: Blue for You
6: Dog of Two Head

8: Just Supposin

10: Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon
I knew right when I saw the panel I knew I was going to have to break down viewing the entire segment in 3 installments due to time restraints. Just finished part 3 and well worth it....just got into SQ in the last year and still much to find going forward....thank boys👍
Thanks for watching Dan!
The first album I ever bought was Piledriver. John Coghlan became my hero. There started my love for hardrock/metal
Great episode. Been a Quo fan since 1982 when a princes trust concert they did was televised on the BBC.
Charles and Diana loved a bit of QUO.
Your camar
camaraderie was excellent it was really fun and entertaining. Throughly entertaining and very informative as aswell. I totally agree with your Co hosts that Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan were the backroom engine of the band without doubt!!
Thanks Wayne!
Not only in the UK. Status Quo has always been great in the whole of Europe
Here in Finland as well. Saw them in Kulttuuritalo, Helsinki in april 1996.
Also in Australia, NZ, Japan & all Scandinavia.
"On the Level" is the first QUo album I got...My Dad bought it for me (alongside Queen's Sheer Heart Attack) when I was 5 years old! A lifetime of good memories! Imagine my bound with those albums....Cheers.
Your Dad was clearly a man of good taste!
@@TranquilityFireReid A huge jazz fan himself (the genre, not the Queen album :-) ). Cheers!
Cannot wait for part two ✌️✌️✌️👌👌👌👍👍👍. Great show!!!
Quo's finest moment is in my view Quo Live, but since we're talking only studio albums, my favourites are.
1 Hello
2 Blue For You
3 Quo
4 Whatever You Want
5 Piledriver
6 On The Level
7 Heavy Traffic
8 Dog of Two Head
9 In Search of The 4th Chord
10 Quid Pro Quo.
This was my Top Ten From my ranking show
10 Dog Of Two Head
9 Quid Pro Quo
8 Never Too Late
7 On The Level
6 Just Supposin
5 Blue For You
4 Piledriver
3 Whatever You Want
2 Hello
1 Quo
Simon Bray's dry British wit makes this a joy. Never was a Quo fan though.
Thanks for watching!
@@simonbrayfromsot1375 I always watch Simon.
Yes, Simon's got a great English sense of humour.
Another great episode with the UK Connection Simon & Steven! as a youngster I only had Quo Live (still have my original vinyl) and Rocking All Over The World and about a couple of months ago
picked up a 3 disc compilation The Definitive Hits, and this ranking episode is making me want to check out the actual albums, especially the late 70's early 80's albums.
Run To Mummy, I'm Sold! Can't go wrong with a Kerry King reference! lol!!!
Thanks Drew! Lots of great music to discover on the albums themselves in the 70s and VERY early 80s. Proceed with caution after that though...
Loved this episode, thanks gents. Quo were my gateway to rock and then metal. They even beat Kiss for the number of final tours . I saw their supposed final ever show, in Milton Keynes in 1984, and they’re still effing going today
Cheers Andrew. Thanks for watching!
Sadly it's Rossi playing the songs of Quo now. But that classic line up just had it. The sound and chemistry were perfect. 100 million albums sold.
1. Quo

great show very entertaining, im a massive quo fan i have everything they have have put out and more on cd and 30 plus vinyl lps, so great hear your picks, like you my favourite would change every day but top 3 are quo, ma kellys and just supposin, but your right heavy traffic is an awesome album and live wow best live album ever, i also have their bbc transcription live album on vinyl from 73 and that rocks, looking forward to part two
Thanks for watching Stephen!
Thanks for watching, great to hear you enjoyed the show. Hope you also enjoy The Quo!
I'd pick QUO as my favourite album
Yeah parfitts solo album is well worth a listen
Great news David!
Great to hear you enjoyed the show! Thanks!
First Quo album I bought was Just Supposin' on tape, saw them on the 1982 album your in a big top, bloody loud gig was right at the front.
Growing up in the UK in the 70s, IMO Quo was one of the best rock single bands. Along with Queen & Lizzy. So 12 Gold Bars is definitely my favourite album. Top 10 albums:
1. If you can’t stand the heat
2. Whatever you want
3. Rocking’ All Over The World
4. Hello
5. Blue for You
6. On the Level
7. Piledriver
8. Just Supposin’
9. Quid Pro Quo
10.Dog of 2 Heads
You might not be so keen on some of my choices for the less than good show Nicholas... Sorry in advance! Thanks for watching.
Great fun listen to you all. Love Quo.
Yes ! At last !
My Top 5 Quo albums: 1. On the Level 2. Hello 3. Quo 4. Piledriver 5. Blue for You HM to: Dog of Two Head/ Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon/ Just Suppossin'/ Whatever You Want/ Heavy Traffic.
I saw them in the USA in the early 1970s and immediately became a huge fan. They blew the roof off the place.
I've read Rossi's biography that when they toured the US opening up for bands like Aerosmith, KISS, Blue Oyster Cult, ZZ Top and many others, people actually went up to them and said they're best band they've seen in a long time. I'm surprised they weren't that huge in the States (apart from Pictures of Matchstick Men)
Fantastic episode - these guys should do Slade / Ian Hunter / Mott the Hoople shows.
Agree 100% Terry!
It’s always the heads down no nonsense mindless boogie era for me and the live album will never be bettered. It does have the best intro to a band ever! Studio wise:
Quo

Blue For You
Just Supposin
Never Too Late

Rocking All Over The World
Fresh Quota a10” mini album with some rare stuff
From the Makers of… ok it’s a compilation but a great intro to the band.

Simon bray is star quality. Period. or full stop. whatever. More please
Saw Quo headline Cardiff Castle in 1976. Top of their game then. Curved Air, Hawkwind and Budgie also on the bill
That's an awesome bill!

Fun fact. Softer Ride was recorded during the Piledriver recording sessions.
@@martinfinch8552 Cheers. Didn’t know that. For me that helps explain why it encapsulates Quo. Points back to Piledriver and forward to Hello.
Yeh, Quo for me is Ma Kelly's, to Blue For You, end of story sadly. You will never beat Piledriver! I felt sad for John and Alan when they left. The heart of the band was gone... 😢
Hi there guys, loved listening to you all again, a very entertaining hour and a bit at work (although I got one or two funny looks when I laughed out loud at one point -Kevin DuBrowski's fault...) I heard Lars Ulrich say when he was a kid in Denmark, it was Purple, Sabbath, Heep and Quo.
In relation to your Lars Ulrich comment, Lars actually wrote in a book called "The Most Popular British Band of all Time, STATUS QUO", it was either The Foreword
or the section in the back of the book.
Lars said that his Father took him to see STATUS QUO in the 70's, when he was 14 yrs old, in Denmark.it must've been 1977.
Of course, Lars has nothing but great words to describe his QUO experience.

Slow train. Just classic. Marvellous tune with the only good drum solo ever recorded
You're right about that drum solo. I hate drum solos but this one is short and entertaining. Perfect! 👍
Quo fan since 72-73, my fav-album is On The Level but its a close race between Piledriver, On The Level, Quo and Hello, enjoyed this
Great and overlooked (upto 76 for sure )band I haven't bought any albums since perfect remedy mind.
Blue Oyster Cult...... Hugh in the States not so big over here , never a big Quo fan but the Album Quo really rocked
Thanks Monkey House. Appreciate the comments!
I‘m a Longtime Fan since the early 80‘s

Great Albums between this Time !
Steven, I've always enjoyed your thoughts and your knowledge.
Thanks again MM!
Pah! I'll rank 'em:
Hello
Quo
On The Level
Piledriver
Rocking All Over
Blue For You
Dog Of Two Heed
Whatever You Want
Ma Kelly
If You Can't Stand The Heat
My dad Mick Green co wrote Big Man on 1982 with Alan Lancaster and also You Don’t Own Me from Rockin All Over The World. And his band Shanghai supported Status Quo on their Blue for You tour
QUO were such a big band and influence on me in my early teens , i guess they came after my T Rex/Glam period..i remember buying the cassettes and pestering my dad to play them on his car cassette player...great memories and still love the early albums now..✌
Isn't it wonderful all the memories we have that are connected to music?
@@TranquilityFireReid hey thanks for replying steven , made my day...really love your reviews , honest , down to earth and respectful. ..bravo mate !!
@@jeremydicker6613 Thanks Jeremy, your comments have just made my day. Hugely appreciated!
This was such a brilliant show.
Cheers Jimmy!
unknowingly, when I tried to listen to status quo I only tried the psychedelic albums - why would I not start at the beginning :) - I checked out Blue For You after this show and it was really great!
thanks for making me give them another try
Great news Daxtear!
This is funny, and great show. My top Status Quo: 1 = On The Level, 2 = Blue For You, 3 = Whatever You Want, 4 = In Search Of The Fourth Chord, 5 = Hello!.
Thanks Ture!
I’m a Scotsman living in Australia.Guid work.
Cheers mate!
Just needed more Simon and Steven after the brilliant 'Worst Of' video.
The lyrics of "Down The Dustpipe" but even more on "In My Chair" are at the top of my favourite Quo 45 rpm (7") singles. Fortunately they are part of the extended version of My Kelly's Greasy Spoon.
I got all the albums up to and including 1982 . Quo were my youth. Quo, blue for you and dog of two head are probably my top 3 albums.
Whatever You Want
Just Supposin'
If You Can't Stand the Heat
Rockin' All Over the World
Hello
Piledriver
Never Too Late
Blue for You
On the Level
Back to Back
Great stuff!!!!!
Another great show you three! You`ve reminded me I need to catch up with a number of Quo albums and looking forward to it. Thanks for the prompt!
Enjoy! Thanks for watching!
Rossi says " All the women there were such a crying shame "
" Dirty Water " is an awesome Country Rock song.
There is nothing FINE about 'Marguerita Time'
I've got to say that SLOW TRAIN is up high in my Top 10 QUO songs and that ROSSI/YOUNG wrote it.
( ROSSI )
ROSSI destroyed the greatest Rock Band of all time and so did PIP WILLIAMS.
No. 1 - Quo! I'm with you all the way! What a stonking album!!
Cracking video- thanks lads. You’re all so knowledgeable and insightful. Often discussions of Quo are just ‘everything 70-81 is great/ everything after is terrible’. There are some latter day Quo albums that I think are well worth exploring. For what it’s worth my top 10:
Blue for You
On the Level
Piledriver
Hello!
Quo
Whatever You Want
Ma Kelly’s
Just Supposin’
Quid Pro Quo
Dog of Two Head
Come on lads let’s have that Kate Bush album ranking. Great show.
It will happen. Just a case of getting schedules sorted. Thanks for watching.
@@TranquilityFireReid no thank you for the great shows🤟
Great show, what a laugh.
Thanks Ron!
