MacBook Air M1 with iMac 27" 2010 as secondary/external display works!

  • Excuse my bumpy English, I had no script and just winged it.
M1 & Target Display Mode works: This is a quick and dirty video showing you that Apple’s article (support.apple....) about Target Display Mode is incorrect.
Target Display Mode is not a proprietary protocol where one Mac talks to another Mac and negotiates if displaying content is allowed. Target Display Mode is just a "software switch" inside of (in this case) the iMac. It can toggle between the input from the OS and the input from the Mini DisplayPort on its back. The kb article states that the host computer must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed. That’s nonsense. If a potato can output a proper DisplayPort signal then an iMac with Target Display Mode and a Mini DiplayPort will most likely show it.
In this video I use a MacBook Air M1 from 2020 (running Big Sur 11.4) and an iMac 27" from 2010 (running High Sierra 10.13.6) and a cheap USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter and a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable. Sometimes you have to press ⌘ + f2 to activate/toggle Target Display Mode, in my case it switched automatically without a needed input from me. If you have a question, drop it in the comment section below and I’ll try to answer it.
Btw. the expensive USB-C to Mini DisplayPort cable by "Mophie" purchased at Apple did not work. Could have been a faulty cable, could be because the cable is different from my current setup (note that I now use that cheap adapter and cable combo).

I tried the same thing on iMac 27" 2013 (which according to Apple, this model still supports Target Display Mode), however this does not seem to work.
Apparently, iMac 2009-2010 has Mini Displayport icon above the port, means this port is purely a display port, while iMac 2011 and later has thunderbolt icon means this port is Thunderbolt 2, not just a display port.
And after researching, I found that iMac 2009-2010 seems like has hardware support to display whatever input on its Mini Displayport, doesn't matter if it's a Mac or even a Windows laptop.
So in conclusion, this trick won't work with iMac 2011 and later, it only works with iMac 2009-2010 with Mini Displayport table (Non-thunderbolt).

As I said a quadrillion times before here in the comments: the cables and adapters are most likely/always the problem. Some work, some don’t (even though they are labelled as working). This whole thing is trail and error on steroids.

Ive run a 2009 iMac for a secondary display for five years to my PC and it worked fine. I think I was using a Mini Display port to Display port cable. For it to work you need to be booted in OS on your iMac. This worked for me even though the cooler on the gfx card on the iMac died and I had to boot it in a safe state.

      Which Macs support Mini DisplayPort?
Most Macs after 2008 and prior to 2016 have Mini DisplayPort; however, the minimum system requirement for running Luna Display must be a 2011 Mac model or newer. Here is a list of Macs with Mini DisplayPort that support Luna Display:
iMac (Early 2011 to Late 2015)
MacBook Pro (Late 2011 to Mid 2015)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 to 2017)

I wonder if it works because it is an early enough model that uses hardware for TDM. Early models seem to have this mode hardwired. Everyone needs more data about this, thanks for your info. I also feel like many people trying this are using thunderbolt cables that are more for data than display ports and the adapter from Apple can't specify it's a display connection due to data and display cables using the same cable but not all devices use the output/input the same.

But those TB4 hubs are not really bargains. A dedicated display would make more sense I guess, not only power wise.

This didn't work for me on a M1 2020 MBA (Big Sur) and 2013 27" iMac (High Sierra).
I first tried a Mini DisplayPort to USB-C cable from Cable Matters with no luck.
I then ordered the Choetech dongle and this didn't work either.
The Choetech page states 'ONLY iMac 2009 Later 27" and iMAC 2010 Middle 27" are compatible'.
I know TDM works as I can project a 2015 MBP to the iMac.
I'm not sure if the issue is hardware or software.
    Any further ideas?

    • @manuelmartensen
      @manuelmartensen  2 года назад +1

The specifications are the big mystery. The cable an/or adapter needs to support a video signal not only data. So if the cable has something like 4K or 60hz in its description it should work. But cable manufacturers can lie. And after a working cable is connected you also have to enable the second display under display settings.

can you mirror your macbook screen to the imac? I'm doing research on this and about to pull the trigger on a m1 mac mini and I hope this works. i have a late 2012 imac 27

Not at home atm, can only confirm that you can expand the screen, no idea about mirroring right now.

You'll need an expensive combo of Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter + Thunderbolt 2 cable. Both must be Apple's brand.

@@manuelmartensen My comment to Daren Chow was about his setup, which include an iMac 27" late 2012, this model has Thunderbolt ports. The iMac in your video is a iMac 27" 2010 with miniDisplayPort. Thunderbolt 1/2 ports are compatible with miniDisplayPort only for downstream (connecting iMac to another display), not with upstream (iMac as Target Display Mode). Could you confirm that Target Display Mode works with miniDisplayPort cable plugged in the iMac late 2012 too?

Trying to use target display mode from MacBook Air 2020 M1(Big Sur 11.6) to iMac 21.5 mid 2011 (High Sierra 10.13.6) but I can't use it. Any idea? Thanks!

As I said in a different comment, some usb-c to thunderbolt cables can’t deliver video only data. It’s trail and error with that cable type unfortunately. Good luck, Masudul ✌️

Hi, would it be the same case if I plug in a Mac mini m1 to an iMac 27" 2015 running high Sierra? Will it show the Mac mini m1 on the screen? planning to get the Mac mini but trying to save the old 5k Retina display on the iMac.

    • @manuelmartensen

Seems like the 2015 model has no more Target Display Mode. You could install Airserver on the iMac though, and expand the Minis display via Airplay.
