Mat K sorry but you really don’t know what you’re talking about. She doesn’t change keys in this song. In fact she doesn’t sing off key at all. She just takes a lot of liberties in how she sings it and adds way too much decoration (that’s an opinion but I guess it’s why people don’t like this performance.)
Ellery Prescott I guess it depends on what you call “off key”. The star spangled banner has a known key and people will either sing in key it was written, or above it or below it. But all of their notes are within that natural key. Whitney Huston is a prime example. She sang a higher key, I believe 2 steps up, but all of her notes and runs were natural for that key....the song sounded true to the song. She definitely changed keys multiple times that was not in line with the natural key of the song or even they key she started the performance in. She was all over the place and not in a good way. I love Chaka Kahn but this was messy. She may not have been flat or sharp, but she was definitely not in a consistent key.

Why don’t people realize that this song is not about “trying” to showcase talent. Feel the lyrics. It’s about endurance and perseverance, victory and faith. If they would sing it from the heart like Whitney, they would go down in history because they would have inspired the nation to keep striving to move forward in the mist of opposition and trials.
