  • From November 13th, colder nights, less foliage on the trees, less cover overhead, fur bearers (local predators) putting on nice winter coats. Asil brood hens all penned up. Hatch pullets also penned up.
As winter sets in, individual fowl will begin to stand out, or get eliminated. Red fox and grey fox wander the farm, but it seems they do not enter the barn or the wood shed where some of these fowl roost.
A few nice ones were in the trees but got picked off, likely a grey fox or barred owl, possibly raccoon but I’ve never seen them in the yard. Coyotes skirt the tree line but my dogs keep them out.
Either way, these yard fowl will fill my freezer as I eliminate undesirable traits, but it needs to be done in a methodical manner. Free range pullets and hens can never be fewer than the stags. These stags here need to be separated (penned up), sold or put into the freezer before February more or less.
