I can understand missing a pet if you're not at home when there's a need to evacuate quickly, but if you're home and need to evacuate quickly, it's your duty as a pet owner to make sure that you take your pet with you...or don't bother getting a pet in the first place.

As a Californian living near many of our devastating fires in the last handful of years I can say that in the majority of cases, many people were not home when these fires broke out, including the Marshall fire of a few days ago. I don't think anyone would deliberately not evacuate their pets if they are able, but in the case of indoor/outdoor cats some might not be found in time. There were also cases of dogs bolting from their owners as they attempted to load them into their vehicles. The huge fire that leveled the town of Paradise CA. a few years ago broke out while many were away at work and they were unable to get back into the evacuation zones to get to their pets. In another devastating CA. fire a few years back people went to bed only to be woken up with evacuation bullhorns blaring through their neighborhoods in the dead of night and had only minutes to gather their families and a few critical belongings before they had to evacuate to outrun the fast moving, wind driven fire. Obviously taking your pets with you is the right thing to do, but I also think we should give the benefit of the doubt and not add insult to grave injury. Many comments on the CA. fires were fraught with cruel and accusatory remarks about people leaving their pets behind as if they didn't give a damn when in realty, they were ether away from home when the fire broke out or were awakened from a dead sleep at 1 a.m. with only minutes to spare. Cats always end up getting the worst of things as they are notorious for hiding or if outdoors, unable to be found on the spur of the moment.

It’s nice to see nonprofit actually doing something instead of just collecting donations.
