You should try and stop through the Cincinnati Area if you are heading towards the midwest. We have THREE bins in the area (two in Cincinnati, one nearby in Dayton) and a ton of Goodwill stores where I find good stuff all the time. Keep doing what you are doing!
There is a very large amount of vintage clothing sellers in ATL. That is the reason you can’t find anything. All these thrift stores / estate sales get raided immediately when anything decent comes around. Thrifting used to be really good in Atlanta 10 years ago.
