Growing A NEW Lush Lawn from Bermuda Sprigs
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 дек 2024
- In this video I talk about growing in my new lawn from bermuda sprigs. I discuss the grow in process from the time the sprigs were put down all the way to the point that the lawn was completely grown in and went dormant in the fall. Transforming this area that was once tall fescue to this elite cultivar of bermuda was an extremely satisfying experience and I learned a lot from this process.
This cultivar of bermuda is called Iron Cutter Elite Hybrid Bermuda. It has a fine blade, excellent cold tolerance, early spring green-up, and high traffic tolerance.

As someone from the north, i never thought sprigging would come in that fast, man what a difference! Almost time to get that scalp done and some sand leveling done!
It was pretty awesome to see. I'll be doing a scalp here pretty soon. We're not quite out of the frost window here.
Amazing progress! I am so jealous of your minimal weed pressure you encountered during grow in. Can’t wait to see the progress this year!
Thank you! It's going to be nice to get this things going soon.
It helps when the yard didnt have weeds to begin with and the neighbors dont either lol
Great progress. It’s amazing how quickly it fills in.
Thank you! Once it took root it just off to the races.
Such a great job. Really happy for you for how well this turned out.
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
Getting ready to call a landscaper to grade and level my yard. I keep going back and forth between Royal TXD seed and Tahoma 31 sprigs. All the forums say that sprigging is easier. Looks awesome.
Thank you! Well whatever you choose, I wish you the best of luck!
🎉🎉🎉 well done sir!
Thank you, Paul!
Nice work man, great video!
@@gocards007 thank you!
Great job. Thanks for the update.
Thank you!
Great progression ! was looking forward to see how this turned out
Thank you! I hope all is well. I appreciate you making it back to watch another video of mine.
@@TheLawnGuardian absolutely
Lawn looks good and came in fast. I’m in the same process. Where did you buy the sprigs from? I live around a few sod farms but they don’t advertise selling sprigs and I was going to just go to the farms and see if they would sell me the scraps from when they harvest the grass.
I live in Creve Coeur and my neighbors Bermuda grass got just about wiped-out last summer, so I went over there and seen that his lawn has Chinch bugs. If you see a lot of brown grass along the sidewalk that is where it will start because the bug like the heat from the sidewalk. If you have a Mail Man that's deliver mail on foot he or she can pick them up from another lawn and deposit them on to your lawn. Once in a while just cut the bottom of a can sticked down to the soil fill it with water and see what is floating. St Louis had a big break out of the bugs and my sister's lawn was one of them too .
Thanks for sharing, my annual apps of Scotts Grub Ex takes care of that.
9:10 The dreaded utility markings 😅 Gateway Fiber got me last summer, too.
I was lucky they didn't have to do any digging in any part of my lawn.
@TheLawnGuardian I actually just got fiber up and running. They came out with a cable trencher and left a nice little scar across the whole front yard and half the side yard about three weeks ago. Luckily it's already greening up.
Looks great Ben!
Thank you! Good luck this season!
Fantastic job man! 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you, sir!
Any new iron cutter videos coming?
@@SirWilliamClark possibly. It's been challenging to make videos over the last year. What would you like to see in regards to the Iron Cutter? It's been doing very well and I have absolutely loved it.
What was your watering schedule after 2 weeks?
So how did the ph lowering process w/Grassfactor turn out. Love to see a follow up video on that and whether it worked or not. Doing a similar plan here and you are a couple years ahead of me. Thanks!
Here's the video I posted a while back showing the improved results and while explaining what all I did.

Here's a short I put together that shows continued improvements over 3 seasons using the same methods in the video I just linked in my previous comment.

@@TheLawnGuardian yep love it and saw it. Love an update!
@@beguhn what would you like an update on? I showed the continued improvements for 3 seasons from 2020 - 2023, demonstrating that the process is working.
@@TheLawnGuardian one of your comments was hidden. I will go back and watch the ones I missed. TU again!
How is the bermuda doing? I'm looking into Monaco myself for next year.
It's doing fantastic. I haven't had a minute to make an update video and hope to at some point but overall it's doing really well.
Looks great I did not know you could use Bermuda for a cool season lawn
Do you mean grow it further north?
@@TheLawnGuardian I thought Bermuda was just for warm season I live in Michigan I believe l can't grow it here
@@shane6002 I gotcha. Yeah this specific cultivar is grown up in Ohio on athletic fields as well as some other places up north. It's been tested in some pretty harsh winter conditions. According to my sources at MVPGenetics, it has 100% survival at -13° low & 350+ hours sub-freezing temps.
@@TheLawnGuardian that's good to know best of luck with everything
@@shane6002 thank you. Same to you!
Your project has inspired me to undertake sprigging a similarly large area in my back yard. A few questions for you - how often were you fertilizing after the lawn was established (looked like about Week 7), and did you increase the Nitrogen 1000/sqft application rate? Great work, it's been fun tracking your progress.
Once the lawn was established I backed off the fertilizer to about a half pound of N/1000sqft every 4 weeks.
Great update! Thanks for the information. Did you hold off on pre emergent until fall or spring of 2024?
I did a fall pre-emergent app in late summer/early fall of 2023 for winter weeds and I'm doing split apps this spring. Thank you for watching!
How is it looking so far this spring into summer 2024?
I haven't had time to make an update video yet this year but I have made some posts on my IG that shows how it's greened up.

I’m trying to completely redo my yard and because of it being on a slope seed isn’t a great option. Would peat moss with a tackifier or it by its self help with holding the soil and sprigs in place? I don’t really have the funds to sod 10k sq ft but sprigs seem do able.
@lawnguardian Looking to do something similar. (I'm out in Ofallon, MO) About how much did the bushels run you? I'm looking to cover 3600 square feet. How many bushels would you recommend?
I paid $3 a bushel and the sod farmer recommended 200 for the 4500 sqft I was covering. I'm not sure what the recommendation would be for 3600sqft. Maybe around 150 - 160 bushels. Not 100% sure though.
@TheLawnGuardian What are your thoughts on Tahoma 31 vs Iron Cutter? Thanks
I have heard great things about T31. I'm partial to Iron Cutter but I don't think you can go wrong with either of them.
@@TheLawnGuardianHow is the Iron Cutter to the bare feet compared to the tall fescue you have? Thanks!
@@catherineagarcia7964 the iron cutter is much softer and it doesn't seem to cause the same itchy feeling for the kids that the tall fescue can have.
Are you still around STL?
Yes
👍
Thank you for watching!
Wow i didnt know burmuda could look this good most of the stuff i see around st louis looks like shit. Though i guess they dont fertilize and cut low like your supposed to with this grass
You are correct. Most people around the STL area do not maintain bermuda properly. I maintained some common/wild bermuda at my old house in Valley Park, STL and I could also make that look good as well. Not as good as this IronCutter but still dang good for it being common bermuda. You don't necessarily have to mow as low as I am, it can still look good at 1.5" to 2" but it really shouldn't be maintained higher than 2".
