- The touching relationship between one of the last Jewish residents of Kochi and her Muslim caretaker. Sarah Cohen's Hand Embroidery is a world famous store selling Jewish speciality items in 'Jew Town', Mattancherry in Kerala. The 95-year-old, affectionately called Sarah Aunty is one of the last remaining members of the Cochin Jews (also known as Malabar Jews) in the city. Her caretaker, Thaha Ibrahim, fondly remembers the glory days of Jew Town, when both sides of the street were home to members of the Jewish community.
101 Traces looks at the last of anything: ethnic communities, folk craftsmen, disappearing trades, forgotten people. It sketches portraits of these unique individuals, locked in a battle they cannot win: a battle against the future. Together, they represent the dying whispers of ancient heritage and traditional individuality. As India moves towards homogenized global pop culture, 101 Traces honors the people, the objects, and the skills that connect us to our ancient identity.

I know Thaha Ibrahim and Sarah aunty personally. He treats her as his own mom and she loves him as her own son. A great example of how any one can be so self less in taking care of their mother. Respect Thaha chetta :) and love you Sarah aunty

She lives very near to the jewish sysnagogue in fort cochin. You can ask any one for sarah aunties embrodery shop. They will guide you there. If you are visiting there, just go and meet Thaha and aunty

In Kerala things are different. Christians are different from the mainstream Christians, Hindus are different from the mainstream Hindus and Muslims are different from the mainstream Muslims. Id probably guess its the same with the Jews too.

My daughter and I visited the Synagogue in Kochi during our recent vacation in India, so this video is very interesting. Like the Jewish community in India we Parsi (Persian) Zarathushtis (Zoroastrians) are also a small community who was given freedom of religion by the Hindus of India and has contributed to India through establishment of industries, hospitals, schools, art galleries, libraries, and philanthropy for all Indians.

I feel lucky to have met her...I had gone to jew town with my grandmother...when my grandmother saw sarah aunty standing at her door, they had a long conversation and sarah aunty showed us around her house.

I actually had opposite experience
I always see her sitting in her home whenever I visit the nearby synagogue. Never really went and said hi though I have always wanted to. My eyes teared up when she lamented that there are no more Jews in Kochi anymore. She was visibly upset. I mean who wouldn't be, after all these years of isolation. Only a handful chose to stay back in Kerala. The rest simply left when Israel called for them.
To truly appreciate this story, one must know the history of Kerala's Jews, the oldest in India. Sigh.

Don't worry. Most of the Syrian Christians in Kerala are a convert from the old Malabar Jews, but after conversion they mixed deeply with the local communities and are left with only few traits. I only believe in facts with proof. Till few months back I believed that my ancestors would have been most probably a convert from the local communities who were most probably Hindu's. But very recently I did a gene test in UK and received a detailed analysis report and it showed I have 50% of Jewish genes (Cochin Jews) and 50% genes from Gujarat (mainly), some Kerala Nair's and other's. I have no idea or evidence about the genetic mix from Gujarat but when I came to know that I have Jewish genetic background I started to believe some of the articles and myths. When I realized this fact my eyes were filled with tears. If I am having such a deep feeling in my mind for my Malayalam and my state Kerala and my country India, I am proud that my country India is a land of many old cultures and traditions and the most beautiful people in the world. I got to come see Sarah ammachis shop today and meet Thaha uncle. It was really special to come see living history at Sarah ammachis shop. Thaha uncle was so friendly and welcoming. Will definitely be one of the highlights of my Kerala visit this year.

You should make a video about the Anglo- Indians left here in India. Since our community is slowly vanishing from India. You can find most of the Anglos in places like Ooty, Chennai, Bangalore, Calcutta etc.

She reminds me of my grandmom whom i have lost 13 years back i pray for her health ...
Jewish also lived in karachi city of Pakistan but they left in 70s due to israel palestine war....Synagogue was attacked in karachi...so people started to leave...only old couple who owned a synagogue were left who did not leave the city but stayed.......their synagogue was occupied by corrupt builder mafia and they had to live on rent...that builder promised to give them an apartment when building was made for commercial purpose but that did not happen....they died poor..........The current place of that synagogue is called madiha towers where flats have been made...
There are a few hundred jews still in Pakistan like Fishel Martin . They are extremely rich but do not openly profess their faith as I know they have synagogues in their houses.
The Jews in Pakistan had to flee because of religious persecution.

Our government must take care of these small Jewish communities so , that they don't leave and keep the 2000 years old Indian Jewish heritage alive .

Every religion has a sacred place or place of origin, they might want to visit that place but are not trying to move it it. In Islam we are taught to love and respect the country we are living in and also love all being as you can see from the video, the caretaker is a Muslim and taking care of the lady and respecting her beliefs.

Sarah Aunty is indeed lucky to have some one as loyal as Mr.Thaha Ibrahim to take care of her.
I remember being called up at the synagogue in Cochin when they found out I was a Levi. I don't remember anything else about the Shabbat service but that it was little different to the one I was used to in England.
To the best of my knowledge India was a very good place for Jews over the centuries, but times move on.

Last time I visit that synagogue at muttoncherry behind muttoncherry palace at kochin , but I unable to entered because my early present at morning before visiting ours but this time I trying to meet with sarah aunty first , i really get tears in my eyes after saw her , i am really interested about Jewish culture and people , i don't want to loose that chance to meet with that brave lady , i wish to god that she will stay between us as long as possible😢
