Bravo
But all heroes leave helpful comments like this one!
How the video should have been ordered!
I know I'm quite randomly asking but does anyone know of a good place to watch new movies online ?
1:03 this single shot is worth more than my car
My Camry cost less than that Strandy
The clean tapping sections though lmao.
Blake Killganon yeah, that was pretty great lmao
You don’t tap Autumn Leaves?
They all sound pretty good. I think the Stephan Carpenter set has the tightest, brightest, and clearest tone with the right amount of grit. But really, you can't go wrong with Fluence.
Agreed!!
18:53 "Do I really love him? Should I tell him? Should I just kiss him right now???"
hey arnold, hey chad. i really like your reviews, but your pickup shootouts are so particularly grat, i had to tell you. i love the way you show the diagrams and explain what each frequency does and how the components affect tone. keep going like that. And never loose your honesty, its great and gives me alot of certainty when i take some influence from your opinions when buying gear. Even tho some stuff you show isnt really for me, i still find your videos entertaining and a little teaching. Also you got me into craft beers, which is quite an accomplishment, since im from germany, where pilsner is the one and only beer ever. greetings
For me:
1. Tosin Abasi set
2. Modern set
3. Stephan Carpenter set
tosin abasi entered the chat
Stephen carpenter entered the chat
tosin abasi is typing

Fishman Fluence shootout? My body is ready!
I like the Stephen Carpenter set the most. They kinda have that tightness and grit.
22:12 “all the lows, Jesus fucking Christ” 😂🤘
Hi guys, really informative video. I really like your reviews Arnold, great content!
Having said that, I just picked up a Korean made Strandberg OS 8 loaded with set of Carpenters from the factory, and I really enjoy them. I have another Original 8 with a set of Moderns, and I like them, but found them a bit too tame when I really want to go balls to the wall on an 8 string. I think Carpenters are made for getting specific tones, to be fair. Def ... tones (see what I did there lol) are definitely known for being unorthodox. I totally agree with your analysis in terms of FR, it's spot on, but there are use cases for this. Voice 1, when you want this slightly muted but bass heavy riffage in places where there is no bass, or if you have a HP filter setup you can add the bass to your sound in places where it's not clashing with other bits. Voice 2 is just pure mid / high filth, for those searing riffs and leads. It's aggressive and unorthodox, and I personally f love it! :D Anyway, it's not a "do it all" set, it's very specialised, and it definitely needs a bit of processing to get the most out of it.
TL;DR if standard 8 string moderns are too tame for you, and you like a bit of unorthodox sound, give Carpenters a try. This is my go-to set for heavy riffage atm. Also harmonics sound so filthy on it, it makes me want to play Machinehead riffs all day long lol
I love the hertz measurement. It really helps turn something that's usually half assed and subjective like reviewing pickup tone into something actually objective. Also the co-host is pretty good. I think he should be in more videos imo
Thanks for the review, you just persuaded me to stray away from the Stephen Carpenter set I was considering putting in my Jackson X-Series 8!
I love the Stephen Carpenter pups personally. The tightness of the Modern is great as well.
I have a Fishman Stephen Carpenter Signature single bridge pickup LTD 28 inch 7 string with a Diezel vh2 and it sounds great
Thank you for this video 🙏🏻
My EMG 57/66 8 string pickups died on me and have been looking for a replacement, I’m gonna go with the Tosins. Feel like the sound and feel is what I’m looking for in my music. You guys rock 🤟🏻
I was look for good cleans and good modern metal distortion tone and damn those first one sound dope for both. The Steph Carpenter ones sound ok, they don't have my dream tones though. Those tosin one ohh 😻🤘. I would get those for myself if I did good in music school. Those were some great tastey jazzy riffs you played on the clean settings. I really like the Devin Townsend ones for 6 strings. I really like how there was a talking review for the pickups after the video and you guys went over frequencies and good at reviewing stuff. Thanks for this. I think more gear videos should be like this.
I bought the KSE fishman pickups, i love them!
Bryan Dowling really want to see them compared too lol
How are they?
Thanks for doing the Angelmaker style music lol. That's my hunger. 🤣
I didn't know Johnny Rico plays guitar...awesome !
Awesome shootout dudes. The Modern sounds brutal as does the Abasi. Really like the Modern but Abasi wins this one with the more pleasant clean tones and slightly brighter but not too much. Dug the tones too.
One of the best pickups reviews I have ever seen. Thank you, gentlemen. I love seeing the frequency spectrum along with it.
Nice review lads. I've been curious about these very pickups, and you've helped sway me a bit.
I cannot thank you enough for doing this comparison! It was excellent across the board and immensely informative. Thank you both.
Steph set for me for sure. Love that sound.
aound exactly same as modern
This is the best pickup comparison I've ever seen. Period. Please keep doing these !
I’ve got the modern set in my 7 string. Love em no turning back
this made my choice much easier then just hoping it sounds good
think i'll be buying one of the three soon
Modern is love
Modern is life
This was fucking great, really insightful, and the freq response curves are really helpful! Thanks Arnold 🤘🏻
Are you going to do a video on the Devin Townsend sigs ? The moderns sound great but it's his I'm mostly interested in because I have even smaller hands than Chad and will never need 8 strings.
I Watch You From Afar The 6 string video is shot and will go up soon
Thanks Chad that's great to hear :D
HAHAHHAHA I knew the steph's had a lot of bass but I actually laughed out loud when I say the EQ curve for voice 2. What in the hell was steph thinking??? Nice shoot out guys, this is the shoot out we need, but not the one we deserved.
Probably high as hell.
he uses modeling processors. which can flub out if the bass is too high sincew they are digital emulation. If he turns the bass up at the source, then he can get a tight bass response that is present without having to dial too much on the amp. As well as using 7 and 8 strings, because they are already lower and if you accentuate their lower frequency in the pickup preamp, you can get away with a lower bass setting but have punch and tightness. Thats the general theory.
Think it matters that his neck pick up sits further back?
@TeapotMullah yea what is said was a complete load of horseshit. The stephen set is based off of the Seymour duncan JB and since steph is a total dumbass and doesn't have any actual functioning brain cells he based his pickups that are exclusively for 7 and 8 string guitars off of a pickup you would never use for either. That is why the carpenters are the most hated fishman pickup
I've been considering getting the peavey invective and the fishman moderns so this video is very timely! thanks!
I will go with the Tosin Abasi pickups for that versatility
I actually likes the Stephen Carpenters best in this shootout for the low and lower mids but the highs were painful to listen to. The others were more consistent over all but the Abasi's did not sound so good in the low end at all to me. I have heard the Stephs before but did not like them a lot but they did not sound like this though. I really want to upgrade for my EMGs with Fishmans but I just can not choose which ones. I play a lot of different types of music but low end it important as well for heavy and clean. The lower mids are probably more important over all but the lows have to be clear and pronounced. Maybe the Devin Townsends will be better but not sure if they come in the 8 string version.
Yoo the Abasi on voice 2 sound fucking gnarly , surprising given Tosins style .
It's based on a passive pickup voicing, so it doesn't have that nasty EMG high end rolloff
Thanks a million for this video. I've been sitting here thinking my steph 6 set had the voices reversed because of how different each voice was in the neck compared to the bridge, but it looks like it was normal after all. Great shootout and can't wait for the 6 string shootout whenever you get to it! I think I'll wait to buy a different set until then.
Indigo Shinigami We shot everything for the 6 string set. It just needs to be edited and uploaded
I'm so glad you posted this I've been in the same boat with my 7 string carpenter set. It really got better by getting rid of voice two on the neck pup so it's only changeable on the bridge. And I used the gaon jumpers ad well. Not gonna lie though, it took me a long time to get used to them and once I change them I'll completly bash the shit out of them too. But for now I'm gonna defend them cause if I don't I wont wanna pick up my 7 string.
so glad you actually played clean! I must be an oddity, I just bought a Boden standard 8 with Fishman moderns and dont play metal.
Nice I'm thinking of doing the same thing! How do you find it for other styles of music? Thanks!
Also I hear you may need a 5 way toggle switch to take full advantage of the Abasi pickup. That’s why he makes his guitars with a 5 way switch.
You can just add a 3 way switch. Or use push pulls on your volume and tone to achieve the exact same thing.
Great video. Exactly what I was looking for.
My only gripe about this is there's a lot of focus on waveform specs. It's good to know but really seems like it biased yall a tad. Awesome job regardless.
Maybe it's the youtube sound but I thought the Carpenters sounded best. Clearest and tightest low end. I will listen again. I did like the moderns better than the Abasi. I wish they had Devy 8 fishman. I thought the Tosin's mid range was overpowering the low end to the point it was washing it out and not as dynamic as the Carpenter. The Carpenter did not sound great in the mid range though a little less definition
.
ArnoldPlaysGuitar -love your channel man, been interested in Fishmans for a while. I'm tempted by those Abasi customs
2:28 I love how even the light reflections fan out with the frets haha x P
Oh yeah the Abasi win for sure. Listened to this vid through my lil Bose blu tooth and that’s what I heard. This pickup just has balls to it.
I had to click onto a video titled FISHMAN FLATULENCE.Yep,didn't disappoint.8 strings ALWAYS sound like flatulence.
I rewatch this just for the faces that are pulled 🤣
I really like the amp presets he's using for this demo. I can actually tell a little bit of a difference on all three of these Fishman pickups.
My experience with fishmann is they are pretty good but lack mids. Scene a few and played on stage with one it the band and the bass drowns them out. Boosting required
so, the takeaway from this is to buy anything and everything tosin likes and trust him more than you trust yourself? i can get down with that
Except for his Dimarzios....and his Ibanez signatures....and his overdrive pedal
Very comprehensive. Good job!
I love the emg 81, 81-7, and 81-8. The Stephen Carpenter ones are the closest to that sound. Not a big fan of passives. It seems that people like the stephen carpenter's pickups if you like the emg 81.
Bear On Guitar I don't think that at all. I have both the stephen carpenter's, and the moderns. The moderns don't sound like an 81 to me at all.
The STEF bridge is basically an active Seymour Duncan JB
the best part of the video are the test-drive riffs
first, excellent video boyz! I can't wait to get these in my new Legator lol.
Thank you guys for making this video! I have the modern 8's and the Tosin signatures in different guitars and I agree with you guys, the Tosin sig's are my favorite of the two. I actually prefer voice 1 on the modern set for most metal rhythm playing (even though the differences are subtle between that and the Abasi set) but the biggest selling point for me on his signature set is the two split coil voicings, they are incredible. Thanks again for doing this, and for making the di's available!
You should do the stephen carpenters again with the high frequency tilt. I'd love to hear the difference. I've heard it makes the pickups sound amazing
I used that set for a year in my 7 string ltd and tried every single possible option including hf tilt and it didnt make it anywhere near amazing. The only time in my life i gave up on a piece of gear was with the SC bridge pup. Luckily the SC neck is the same as a regular modern. I put a regular modern 7 bridge pup in place of the SC bridge and now im very happy. They really should discontinue the SC set cause thats way too much money for such a poor pup. I trusted they would be good cause all the hype but the hype does not apply to the SC set. Damn it really gets under my skin thinking about the time and money i wasted on that set.
Thank you guys!
All of the Fishman Fluence pickups can coil split, the Tosin set is just designed around those sounds.
You mean coil tap
The unexpected alcohol review at the end haha
Great in depth review guys!
Great video. I got lucky and dodged a bullet getting the Modern over the Steph set. Man that would have been a disappointment for a 250+ dollar pickup set.
Stupid question but how do you like that Ikea FREDDE desk as a recording desk? Does it wobble at all I might pick one up. Thanks in advance and great video!
The desk works great. Zero wobble.
I have the red sparkle Stef Carpenter SC-608B and his signature Fishman’s work perfectly for that guitar. Not sure how great they sound in other guitars.
Folks. You did an awesome piece of job!
Very useful!
I'd love to hear high gain setting of Fishman Fluence Modern Alnico pickup in BRIDGE position though...
It sounds just killer in bridge position..
Anyways ! Thank you so much!
Nice video! I would have liked to hear the third voice from the Tosin set, but thanks for the comparison!
I thought abasi fishmans came with a 5 way switch
How come no one on earth can spell Stephen. It’s StephEn.
Was just gonna say get Chad on again lmao Maybe in month or two lol
You guys gave the steph one a lot of crap but it was my favorite sample :(
Really want the new green sparkle stephen carpenter LTD, really don't want to suffer through using those pickups for any period of time, tbh.
Nice OLP Musicman shirt
You need to get a six pack of Alamo Amber Lager, Arnold. Seriously dude, you're missing out on another good brew. Also, I think you guys mite have just influenced me into getting the Tosin signature set over an EMG 808/808X set... Kinda curious to hear that extra third voice in mention.
Nice cleans Arnold.
I have a sterling jp70 and want a 7string tosin's signature pickups, do I need to drill a new hole to get that 3rd voicing this guys are talking about? or how does it work?
I'm at a toss up between the moderns and Steve carpenters, can you do some more stuff on the low end with pinches?
Uhmmmmm the tone is FUCKING AMAZING!!!
idk about tight. these are probably the least tight and one of the most muddy muddy pickup
Good job Arnold! When's the six string video coming?
I know this is a super old video but I'm wondering if the Toisin set is as good for flat out brutal as the moderns? I've heard they're lower output. Is the output substantially lower in practise? I've chosen the Abasi set for an Aristides I have being made and hope I haven't made the wrong choice. I'm basically a caveman riff / black metal guy that wants everything at 10 all of the time. Just hoping the Toisin's end up not being a mistake. I guess it's not the end of the world either way, can change em out if needed.
Been a big fan of fishman fluence moderns for awhile. I have them in my mayones regius custom and Strandberg Boden Metal 8.
Fishman Fluence is what I really want
Six string sets next?
Wonderful job guy, these pickups sound very alive!
i love your videos!
been wanting to see something like this for a few weeks, thanks Arnold and Chad
I noticed you never specifically said your favorite sets, do you guys have a preference to the Moderns or Tosins?
still don't know if it's worth the $200-$250 or so for the pickups + $100 installation just to put them in my RG8 lmao
Mason Stanley The Tosins were what we both preferred
I just came here for the riffs😎
Given the task they placed upon themselves, and given the herd of OCD-qualified bedroom guitarists that will undoubtedly pick it apart, this was a useful and comprehensive video. A bit cringe-worthy at times, but I'm over it.
The Stephen Carpenters are NASTY!! Definitely my favorite of the 3. That's what i'll be going with to replace my Seymour Duncan passive Nazgul/Sentient in my Ibanez 8 string.
Hot take the tosin abasi set sounded the best for lead
I'm interested in what kind of watch and wristbrand does Arnold wear?
I love how the clean demo is elevator music. "I don't give a fuck about cleans"
Very good review, moderns definitely win for me but all its done Is increased my Strandberg gas haha.
Great playing too, only criticism I have is your vibratos need some work. Other than that top notch review 😊
What about a review of a Solar guitar?
Kostas Ntougias here from the future he did one
I appreciate the effort, but I have never tried pickups out and commented on a frequency presence. I know its a post production thing but still a great review.
And that's fair. Neither have I until I was heading into this video. It was honestly kind of a panicky moment where I was like "FUCK, how do we articulate our thoughts without sounding like every generic guitar pickup description in existence?!"
@@ArnoldPlaysGuitar fair call. I love the channel sir.
Good Review
Nice Shirt!
Cool review! Sounds cool too. 20hz is actually the lowest frequency most humans can physical hear. Quite a bit lower than an f# on bass but either way there is no reason why the to even have that much lowend. Go hit record and like what you said, any person that knows anything about mixing at all will cut that completely out. But then again why buy a signature set from a dude who places pickups in weird places because of the looks in the first place lol
F#0 on a bass is 23.124Hz. And yes, Stephen is so weird about pickup placement.
