  • The standing high jump was an Olympic event from 1900 to 1912. Unlike the traditional high jump, athletes in the standing high jump had to jump from a stationary position without a run-up, using both feet together.
The standing high jump’s popularity declined in the 20th century, but it remained a championship event in some Scandinavian countries for a longer period. One of the best results ever recorded was 1.90 meters by Swedish athlete Rune Almén in 1980.
The men’s standing high jump at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm was the final appearance of this event in the Olympics. The competition took place on July 13, 1912.
Platt Adams from the USA won the gold medal with a jump of 1.63 meters. His brother, Benjamin Adams, also from the USA, took the silver with a jump of 1.60 meters. The bronze medal went to Kostas Tsiklitiras from Greece, who jumped 1.55 meters.
