    Thanks Bryant for a great review.
    I currently have a Micro Cube and I'm a serious busker. I play a broad range of music genres on acoustic violin. However, the Micro Cube is drowned out by Street noise in busy city streets.
    I'm upgrading my performance to include backing tracks, loop pedal, and vocals. I've just bought a Rode RT3 Microphone, so, I guess I'm serious about my music at every level and probably best going for the Street Cube 50 Watt. As you say, it's an investment, and probably a lifetime investment, so it seems worth saving for the best gear.
    Thanks for helping me making the right choice 👍

    id love to know just how much louder the street ex is in terms of decibels... because the microphone kind attenuates the sound. Cool video

    Hey bryant, im a guitarplayer myself. I use to have this backstage peavy amp which i would play in my garage alonge with my cd player. I use to work at wal mart and one day a manager said to me u should play your electric here im like yeah but how i have to hook it up to an out let and wal marts not gona let me do that. So he told me find a portable power supply then gave me an idea i saw a portable car jumper 36a with porta like a cigarette light in cars so i thought if i can find a 3 prong adapter so i did and it worked so i was playing with my cd player in my car till i found out about roland micro cube but i thought it was too small so about 3 years ago i find the cube street amp and thought this is perfect so my dad got it for me for christmas... Duuuudee i been getting all kinds of people coming up to me tipping me offering me gigs. The i stumbled up on your video some time after and did know there was a street ampx im like dude that thing is massive. So when u did rhe comparisons then i realized i made the right choice. I like alot of volume and quality but also time of play i usually spend about 2-3 hrs tops playing at wal mart although i dont work there no more managers are cool with me people come up to me thanking me cus some songs i play make them feel better after a bad day so i thank u for the reviews but also not to knock down the other amps i mean the small one is good if you just playing for ur own enjoyment sound quality may not be as great but good for starters to and the big one like u said is really good for if your playing for a good size crowd. So thank you

    Since you made this video there have been quite a few comparison vids on RUclips. Most are annoying cos they either plug the pre amp into a more powerful combo/mixer/doodad/thingywhatsit or they shove a mic hard up against the speakers. Then they compare them indoors in a studio type setting. Which is no help whatsoever considering the use they are intended for. You, however, have produced an excellent comparison video. One of the best. Outstanding. You come across as a really nice guy as well. I thought the comments about you being the pool cleaner (I assume meant with innocent humour) actually ignorantly offensive. I'm glad you left them in for the record. As for you. Good on ya mate. Nice one!

    Hey there. Good review. I have the Street Cube which i use for busking and I'm considering buying the the EX. Obviously it's louder, but in terms of clarity how much better is it? When I use my Street Cube with my guitar and effects pedals it becomes very muddy and compressed sounding. Hoping the EX is far better.

    Excellent review. I agree that the two larger amps are expensive, but you pay for what you get. I own the EX. I have a friend who plays keyboard... and he is totally amazed at the clarity of the EX using the "third" input when we jam together. The bass, he says, often becomes muddy with most amps... not so with the EX.

    Hi there, I was wondering how you recorded the audio on your video. If its going straight to the camera its possible that it gets auto-compressed when it reaches a certain level and so it would be really difficult to know how loud it really is.

    • @BryantPayton
      @BryantPayton  7 лет назад +5

      Thank you for asking, audio did kind of get compressed for the EX. So I recorded my voice with a mic attached to my shirt, then I would switch to a shotgun mic on my camera when I would play the guitar.
      Since I used the same volume settings on the mic for each amp, the mic couldn't capture the EX volume in its entirety. So it is a bit louder than in the video.
      I will be doing another comparison video between the Cube Street and Cube Street EX when I'm back home at the end of the month. For this one I will be testing both amps with completely maxed out settings

    Very well done. You are very clear on wattage, estimated cost and settings to give the listener what they need to make decisions. Maybe just a little harsh on the smallest amp as there is always a place for each one. But overall, a very good review.

  • @themaelstromnotebook5418
    @themaelstromnotebook5418 2 года назад +2

    Thanks for the demo! I also busk for a living, and agree on the relative paucity of decent reviews/demos of busking amps. I have the middle cheaper Cube Street, and am also very familiar with the Extra-large Cube, having had lots of contact with other buskers using that one.
    Regarding volume on the middle amp. I don't know Las Vegas, but I can say I've busked all over Ireland, Northwest England, Portugal and Italy, and have never felt I needed more volume out of an amp... in fact I'm a little embarrassed about not even knowing the wattage of this amp. Most of the time I busk on vaguely busy streets at busy times... let's say small to middle sized towns, and shopping areas, and the occasional indoor gig in a medium sized bar-room. The volume for the mic rarely goes above a quarter on the dial, my acoustic the same (but with gain set at three-quarter volume). Perhaps I was told the wattage on it when I bought it but I don't remember, and couldn't have given an answer if someone had asked what the wattage of my amp is! Why? Well, it simply does the job, since I'm usually performing solo, singing and playing acoustic, or with my partner on cajón. Which is to say; if you're performing solo or in small, low-key band set-ups on an average noisy street you needn't worry about volume with the Cube Street.
    My dilemma is whether to upgrade to the Extra Large, since I need to have 3-4 channels for a minimum of two guitars and a mic, or possibly mic up the cajón, or a third musician. I think - from this demo - there's obviously no problem there re; mid-to-high volume acoustic guitars or, presumably, mics also. The problem I have with my current Cube is that it simply doesn't deal well with my electric Gretsch Streamliner... my Hudson acoustic plays like a dream through the Cube Street but there's just no way of solving the fact that the electric sounds muddy and/or thin (I'm pretty much using the volume settings I mentioned on cleaner channels) particularly with rhythm playing, and playing that involves a lot of drones and open strings. I'd say your demo of the Ex didn't really solve this problem for me, as I didn't notice that an electric sounded any better through the Ex. Perhaps this is simply a guitar problem, and I will have to part exchange my current electric for something else, or buy some effects to sort that problem out with the Gretsch. We'll see.
    But thanks again for this. It was really useful.

    You have had no issues using rechargeable "AA"'s? I have a Peavy Nano Vyper that I use at Church but it says specifically to only use alkaline batteries no rechargeables!

      they will work with rechargeable like eneloop, Ladda, or any NIMH type AAs, the only reason why they don't recommend is the lower voltage of nimh at 1.2 volts per cell instead of 1.5 volts for alkaline types. Basically you get slightly lower voltage hence lower power output thats all.

    I got the Cube Street and found settings I really like, but as you said, it doesn't have a lot of power. So I got the EX. More power for sure, and a lot more flexibility in what you can plug into it, BUT efx settings for electric guitar are much fewer on the EX (no separate gain, no tremolo). If I want to create a sound I like, I'll need to carry around efx pedals.

    Ideally, I would keep the Cube Street and output to a separate battery powered speaker (even with the more difficult hauling around), but it has no output capability. I would have to hack it.

    So that's the trade-off for me: more power but worse sound, or better sound but not so much power.

  • @PJmusica

    Man, do you think the cube street can be used as a return in a band situation? I have a small band, we play at small places, but since we have drums, we sound loud. Where they don't offer us a proper sound return, I barely hear what I'm playng or singing. So I am looking for a small amp to carry with my equipment, for sound return. The EX is too big for me, does'n fit on my hard cases. Do you think the cube street could do it? It is just perfect in size, but I'm afraid I'll not hear a thing.

    Right on honest review. I have had all three. The Micro Is of kids that want to play metal in the bedroom. Cube Street is more of a pro amp you can use for street and parties. Easy to carry. The EX is serious business. I had it for a year or two and never needed more than the 25 watt setting. I have had lots of amps and such. But will always have a Cube Street. You can sit in on an acoustic jam with it and keep the volume down and have a mic to sing with.

    Great review! What kind of speaker stand is that?

  • @SuperJ333
    @SuperJ333 4 года назад +2

    Well - the small amp is actually a Roland Microcube GX, and the GX is an upgrade from original Microcube - you can program and save your own pre-sets, on this one, and there's on line capability if you have Apple devices like iPhone.
    It's an awesome little amp, but at 3 watts nobody in their right mind would think it was any use for busking, however, as very highly portable, battery operated, bedroom, practice, teaching, or studio amp, it's perfect - and very loud indoors!
    Also, I watched the video to hear how much louder the 50w amp was, but the 5w street cube seemed to me to have more power and punch on acoustic guitar in this demo.
    However, this sort of random sounding 'noodling' isn't really a good test - some big strapping chords would have been good thrown in!
    And it's not just about wattage - the Street has 6.5" speakers, whereas the Street EX has 8" speakers - and that pushes a lot more air.
    I didn't agree a stand was necessary either - both street cubes are wedge or monitor shaped, so they project the sound into the air anyway, not into the ground - sorry mate, not impressed with how informative this review actually was...

    You do not say what setting you are using on the Acoustic guitar on any of the amps.
    On my CubeStreet I generally use the "mic" setting on the instrument side with an Acoustic guitar.
    On my MicroCube (old style 2watt) I generally use the Vox (Brit Combo) or the JC Clean with a touch of Reverb.
    I do not own an EX.
    Anyway, it would be helpful if you specified which settings you are using.
    Otherwise, Nice Video.

    The 50 watts in the EX, is that per channel? Or if you only use 2 channels it will pump out 25 watts per channel?

    Do you think the EX would work to amplify a bass guitar for busking? Difficult to find a battery powered bass amp.

    I just got a cube street to use for a convient practice amp. I sat it up up the speakers pointed away from me, I suppose this is how it would be pointed if busking too. It immediately occured to me that the control panel is actually upside down for a busker. No big deal I just thought it was rather odd given it's intended purpose. It's not even convient with the speakers pointed at you because then the controls are on the sloping panel opposite you and sloping away. No matter how you cut it, the amps except for the micro are built upside down. Just sayin.

    On either of them, can you run a guitar on one channel and a vocal mic and aux in from a phone or computer at the same time. So I could play guitar and sing along to a backing track?
